Director: Vijay Lalwani
Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone, Shefali Shah and Ram Kapoor
Quick Take: Spectacular cinema calling

How often do we get a precise piece of cinema, one that fulfils both technical and creative expectations emphatically? Karthik Calling Karthik (KCK) is a film that can safely be labeled a movie that can even please Hollywood buffs.

KCK is the story of an odd-ball guy played by Farhan Akhtar. The almost naive Karthik struggles to make good in a world full of guile and manipulative people. His lack of self confidence over shadows his talents and Karthik finds himself isolated and even insulted at times. So much so that he isn't even able to send an email to Shonalee (Deepika Padukone) the female colleague he's head over heels about. And suddenly out of nowhere a call changes his life and gives him new found confidence.

The best thing about KCK is its spontaneity. It stays away from all traditional potboiler materials and themes. In fact, it surprises you with its wit, humour and an awe inspiring premise. The screenplay goes back and forth and leaves you guessing if this is a psychological thriller or a supernatural feature. Deepika Padukone does a fantastic job as Karthik's sweetheart and exhibits calibre in scenes of shock and fear. Farhan handles the nuances of his role with ease and makes you believe in the contradictions of his complex character.

KCK would've been a classic had Vijay Lalwani, the director and writer, spent a little more time, developing an ending that equaled the brilliance exhibited in the preceding length of the film. The rushed ending leaves some aspects unexplained. But the bottom line is, when you watch this movie you will feel that finally Indian cinema has what it takes to impress on an International level

OyeG Review

A slick casting credits sets the mood for this unusual suspense thriller. 'Karthik Calling Karthik' is the story of a reserved and introvert guy who works like an underdog but takes charge of his life after he receives an inspiring phone call. Life is looking up for the new, improved Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) who gets whatever he wants – good job, money, respect and a sexy ladylove (Deepika Padukone). But, happy times don't last long. What happens eventually is something to be experienced on 70mm!

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues/Direction

Another talented filmmaker from the ad world, Vijay Lalwani is here to take you by surprise. He scores big in writing-direction department. The unusual plot of this romantic thriller is the USP of the film and Lalwani's work doesn't fall short of expectation. The film is youthful and the director's depiction of Farhan and Deepika's love story has sugar and spice. Although the plot seems dragging and unconvincing in the first-half, a powerful second-half with ample dose of suspense, thrill and edge-of-the-seat moments makes up for the flaws. The sequences find a justification in the unpredictable suspense.

Performances

No, Farhan doesn't play a double role in the film, but his performance sure has a double impact – too simple a guy and a prince charming combined. Farhan Akhtar is pure talent. Wonder why he took so long before showing his charisma on screen (he has proved he is excellent behind the scenes as well)! Deepika epitomizes a GenX working girl to the core, and carries a short crop and shorter dresses with effortless lan. Though her character has a tinge of her Love Aaj Kal persona, we are not complaining. Other actors play their part well.

Music

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is youthful and adds zing to this unordinary tale. The song Hey Ya is most popular.

I watched the movie. I'm being honest, it's the best movie that I have watched. I loved everything about the movie. All the actors did a great job because they acted natural. I didn't even know it was a movie, I thought it was a real life situation that I was watching.
Great performance. Great movie.
SPOILER ALERT Highlight to see
the end I thought he was going to kill himself. And I knew it for sure that he has some kind of mental disorder from the first time I heard about this movie.
There were so many parts in the movie that was too funny. Everybody in the theatre was laughing way too hard that it was hard to hear.
First funny one was when Deepika was slapping around that cheating boyfriend of hers. Second one was when deepika went to farhan's house at 5am just to see if the phone will ring. And she says she'll call the caps if someone is playing a prank on him.
And the most funniest scene was when farhan was trying to buy a phone. And he was looking way too hard at trying to pick a phone. The guy at the store was telling him, It's just a phone. It's not like your picking a bride. And when the telephone rings at the store and phone jumps and look around. The guy at the store gives him this expression.... it was way too funny
I give this movie 10 on 10 for everything. It was like I was watching a hollywood movie and not a bollywood movie. Bollywood movies are all about random songs popping up from no where, changing outfits. This movie seemed real and believable. Actually this story is real, I know there are some schizophrenic people like that

Saw KCK yesterday and enjoyed every bit of it!
Its a very urbane and modern kind of cinema, targetted for the specific audience in metro's like Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore ect, who can identify with characters like Shonali and Karthik! The audience from small towns would probably be bored to death and not understand half the dialouges (Which are in English or Hindi mixed with loads of English words!)
The story is different and the director manages to do a fairly decent job of holding the audience interest for most parts!
The performances are all very good, right from Farhan Akhtar who is coming out as one of the best actors in Bollywood to Deepika who suits the role to the T! The supporting characters such as Shefali Chayya, the guy who play's Karthik's landlord and Ram Kapoor are excellent! Ram Kapoor especially is perfect as the hilariously hateful boss who makes Karthik's life miserable!
The equation between Farhan and Deepika is great, as observed from the Promo's! They both have this very uber cool sort of personalities which translates to some really good chemistry on-screen! His geekiness is offset wonderfully by Deepika's beauty and charm and somehow they end up looking very made for each other types!
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie! Even though the climax is a letdown, the performances of all the actors and the general feel and look of the movie makes it a definite one time watch!
PS: I can't understand why people criticize Deepika's acting so much...till now in all her movies, she has played her characters quite well! So she has not given path-breaking performances, but that is only because, her roles have been such that requires her to play roles that don't require such historinics! In KCK, she really looks the part of her character and does a fairly good job of what is given to her!
PPS : Farhan should try something radically different now and prove his versatility as an actor! Even though his acting in KCK is flawless, it kind of reminds one of his previous movies!

Lots of static!

T

he idea of a mystical assistance to succeed through life's inevitable disappointments is quite a fascinating one. Genie in the lamp, Fairy Godmothers or any wish-granting medium is an upshot of this peculiar human fantasy.

Karthik Calling Karthik [ Images ], too, stems from this deep-rooted desire.

Only our eponymous hero (Farhan Akhtar [ Images ]) isn't Aladdin, Cinderella or Bruce Nolan (of Almighty fame). A stereotypical weak geek at the receiving end of his scowling landlord (Vipin Sharma doing what he does best -- snap) and growling boss (Ram Kapoor with his snarling skills should sign up for Wolf Man), he's pretty much invisible for everyone else in the world, including, the leggy colleague in a pencil skirt (Deepika Padukone [ Images ]) to whom he's written a thousand plus unsent drafts of affection. Basically, he is Amol Palekar of Chhoti Si Baat, sans the goofy smile and mysterious past.

Dude seems to be in desperate need of Cinkara (Hamdard ka tonic, anyone?). But this is Farhan's production. And he's all about indelible charisma, hip aesthetics and urban wit. While the easygoing charm and wall decor is spot on, absence of crisp humour is conspicuously felt all through its loitering 16 reels.

Having said that, it's imperative to remember this is a Vijay Lalwani film. The first-time director is the strength or weakness behind its story, screenplay, dialogue and direction. If you view this with the expectations of a Farhan caper, you're doing both of them great disservice.

In other words, herbal tonic is out of question. Instead Karthik starts receiving strange calls from another Karthik who promises to help him attain everything that is rightly his -- power, money and love.

Desperate for comfort, Karthik doesn't need too much convincing before he takes up the seemingly unconditional offer. In no time, he's promoted from cabin to cubicle and single to boyfriend status.

No personality makeover in Hindi films is complete without a change of wardrobe. Even Sai Paranjape couldn't resist doing this to Farooq Shaikh in Chashme Buddoor. And so it's bye-bye Surinder Sahni and say-hello-to-Dil-Chahta-Hai.

Quickly enough, Lalwani runs out of ideas and till intermission KCK seems to be heading nowhere. Pace (editing by Aarti Bajaj [ Images ]) is one of the film's recurring problems. It's unnecessarily pensive and long-winded for its genre.

Even the romantic interactions are sluggish and uninspired. Although Farhan and Deepika are a cool couple to look at, you don't feel the vibe, mainly, because the conversations are just so 'meh'.

Their chemistry fares better against the breezy Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy [ Images ] composition, Hey Ya, choreographed effectively around their courtship and dating in office, malls, coffee shops and Khandala.

Things get dark and creepy in the second half when the Karthik-Karthik pact takes a beating. This is when Lalwani comes in his element and shows a flair for gritty thrillers without resorting to cheesy exaggeration or relying on excessive technique (camerawork: Sanu John Varughese, background score: Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale).

At this point, the on-going events on screen lead me to construct a sort of Dr Faustus meets The Dark Half brand of murkiness. If only Lalwani was as ambitious as the sinister alternatives in my head.

He, to my disappointment, opts for a rather squishy third act as opposed to the threatening climax I had anticipated. While Lalwani deserves a pat for working around an unusual, intriguing plot, he fails to sustain the same with substantial meat or layers.

Also, why does he hint out the suspense so early in the film? It's a crazy move and ruins any hope of the obligatory 'Whoa, I didn't see that coming.'

What is remarkable, however, is to witness is Farhan's evolution as an actor. Despite being a fairly visible face in the media, there's something unpredictable about his aura. And so far he's worked it to his advantage -- never letting the audience know what else he is capable of till he actually does.

Unlike Luck By Chance [ Images ] or Rock On!!, which saw him play self-assured characters, he is surprisingly believable as a fraught loser as well. He conveys the anxiety, simplicity and frailty of Karthik even when the script isn't doing it for him. Perhaps it's his innate filmmaker instinct.

Clearly, Deepika Padukone doesn't have it. And while she looks every bit of the unattainable dream Karthik envisions her to be, she doesn't hold a single scene on her own. Whether she's cautiously lighting a cigarette, robotically slapping the office jerk in Del Italia or scoffing at Karthik's confessions, all you really see is, well, nothing.

Films like Karthik Calling Karthik are all about winding up right. This one fails to make a connect. Pity, it could have been that all important call you've always been waiting for.

This movie won't be everyone's cup of tea. If you like movies that are colorful, dancing around with different outfits, full of happiness than you won't like this movie.

But if you like dark comedy with sad emotions mixed with psychological issue than this movie would be your cup of tea.
