it might sound like a funny topic to some..😆if so please forgive me..😊
somebody posted a pic of the movie 'housefull' which made me create this topic! mods, please close it if its already discussed!😊
well guys, iam confused..whats up with the newly emerged bikini culture in bollywood?iam not talking about the cultural and moral values in india..but generally if we think about it whats the need for that? is it because of the changing taste of indian audience or because of the changing winning formulas in the minds of bollywood directors?
a bikini still doesnt confirm the victory of a movie..egs;much hyped bikini scenes in tashan, kambakt ishq..also the skimpy outfits of deepika and priyanka in billu..lets not forget the blue lara too😛..all these films flopped badly..on the other hand movies with simple and catchy concepts like paa,a wednesday and chak de india became big hits..remember,a wednesday and chak de india didnt even have a romantic scene! so who is the winner here?ofcourse the story! so i dont understand why the movie makers are going after insisting the heroines to be skinny and the heroes to have six packs and eight packs! why cant these people invest the same amount of time and energy for something better like improving acting skills, coming up with innovative ideas etc!😕

all i can say is that bollywood film makers do everything on their films except working on the script and story...for them looks are important than the story, thats why films like kambhkkt ishq and blue are made.

I really have no answer as to why they need to don bikinis to sell the product; I never really found the answer. I agree, movies that do not have the "bikininess" (for lack of a better word) tend to fare well than those that do. However, still the so called film makers do not learn.
I find it wrong when the producers/filmmakers say that this (as in bikinis etc) is what the audience wants; that the audience is "s*x starved". If this was the case, movies such as A Wednesday would not have, well should not have, fared as it did.
I really see no need for such tactics to promote the movie. No matter how advanced people are getting, or how open; it's still awkward seeing actors in bikinis/kissing scenes etc with family. Bollywood thrives to a great extent from the family audience, but still they come up with excuses "it was an essential part of the script". You'd think they'd have learnt by now that the audience isn't dense as they (producers etc) make them to be. Even now, if the makers of Houseful are asked about the bikinis, the director or producer will say "the script demanded it".
I guess Bollywood is trying hard to become a Hollywood. It's sad though, b/c some very beautiful films from Bollywood have been produced over the years.
Anyways, I'm probably dense to not understand the "aesthetics' of the bikini, or for that matter the love-making, season that's going on too.

it is not new Bikini 'culture' started way back in the 60's70s when actresses like Sharmila,Dimple,Zeenat,Parveen later Sarika wore bikinis.
Earlier in the silent era some actresses wore swimsuits..Nutan and Saira Banu were the famous ones when talkies started..

well..i agree bikinis are not new to bollywood..but this newly adapted bikini+love making+rap culture is quite new to bollywood..
yeah..back in 60s and 70s some heroines who were bold enough did wear swim suits and bikinis..but you dont see them doing it in every other movie..you dont hear the directors pressurising the heroines for an anorexic life style..neither did we see muscular guys and bikini babes filling the movie posters..thats what i meant...

Bikini culture is not new to the Hindi film industry. It probably started with Devika Rani who also drank and smoked and also ran away with her co-star and then came back to her husband. I know nothing to do with the bikini topic but just wanted to write that women in films were bold back then esp. in 1920-30s.

This is Nutan

May be it is not that bold by today's standard but it raised eyebrows in that era. Nargis too appeared in a similar suit.

Then there are Sharmila, Rakhi, Tanuja in actual bikinis and from there on every famous female actor has appeared in one.

@bold--i completely agree with this part..now its become sterotypical for every hero or heroine to say...''the script demands that love making scene..this bikini was needed for a particular part of the movie''..
i think they are misunderstandidng the audience quite a lot..i agree the technology has advanced..people have become more forward minded..but that doesnt mean that we are all waiting to be in swim suits..

Well! in my opinion nothing much has changed since the 20s. What was bold in that era's standard happened in that era and the same is happening even now. Live-ins, multiple partners, closet gays, casting couch and much more happened then. Some of the stories are absolutely shocking. I think women and may be men too are in much better position today.

If anything I see today's audience more accepting towards good cinema and that is why we reject 'Tashan' and accept 'A wednesday'. I mentioned Tashan because it was advertised for its bikini like Housefull.

In 80s-90s, serious cinema was branded as art house and only won awards. It was never seen by audience till it came on doordarshan but today we do watch A Wednesday, Welcome to Sajjanpur etc. The line between art house and mainstream is blurred. We have movies that cater to all types of audience unlike before when all films followed similar pattern. This is what my opinion is of today's cinema.
