I don't get shocked by my children's scenes: Sharmila
As the head of India's censor board, actress Sharmila Tagore is needed to certify movies according to their subject and treatment. Obviously the role also sees her going through intimate scenes and abusive dialogues.
We asked the veteran cinema personality how she reacts when she sees her son Saif Ali Khan and daughter Soha Ali Khan performing passionate love scenes on screen.
"Then I don't see the movie as a mother to them," Tagore told DNA on the sidelines of the Mami (Mumbai Academy of Moving Image) Film Festival, where her film Life Goes On was also screened. "I cut myself out completely and look at it from an unbiased viewpoint. That way, I don't get embarrassed or shocked to see them.
"I have acted for many years now and I know that sometimes an actor has to do scenes because he or she is required to do so for the film," she said. "I see my children's performance in such scenes. They are good actors.
"As actors one should just concentrate on doing one's bit for the film and put in all efforts possible to make one's performance dazzle. I'm happy that my children do that without hang-ups."
Talking about Life Goes On, Tagore said she chose to do the film because of the element of realism in it. "I'm loving the kind of realistic cinema that is being made today," she said, "and it is the gripping realism that attracted me to sign the movie. The story of this movie was very normal and simple, just like how a family you know in real life would be. It is this simplicity that drove me to it."
Talking about her character, she said, "I play a very traditional woman in the movie, a homemaker with a lot of strength. She is a great modern-day character with a lot of love, depth, and common sense. She is someone who creates her home and I thoroughly enjoyed playing the role."
