We bring the curtains down on OUR ANNUAL SCREEN awards with the most popular categories — Best Actor and Best Actress. Here's who you picked as the Bollywood King and Queen between Puja '08 and Puja '09
KING
1.Aamir Khan it is! The man who doesn't take awards wouldn't mind accepting the Best Actor honour from our readers. After all, there's no false voting involved, no biased jury, no performances or promises to keep. Be it the hair cut or the carefully sculpted abs, AK really made Ghajini an event and his fans didn't go back disappointed. Big scene? Aamir watching Asin help some challenged children on the road. Man, can those eyes talk!
2.Shahid Kapur really gave Aamir a tough fight with his Charlie-Guddu act in Kaminey. And that's quite an achievement.Vivah, Jab We Met, Kismat Konnection... Shahid has been baking that cake just right and Kaminey proved to be the icing. Big scene? Double role scenes are always tough and Shahid pulls it off brilliantly in the
action-packed yeh-guitar-mujhe-de-de sequence.
3.Suri, oh Suri! Shah Rukh Khan is not used to any spot apart from the top but here he must be content with the bronze medal for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. This year, he was not half as good as Aamir, with Rab Ne's Suri getting half the number of votes polled by Ghajini's Sanjay. Big scene? Every time SRK goes: "Punjab Power, lighting up your life, Surinder Sahni this side ji..."
4.Some said Saif Ali Khan was deliberately styled like Ranbir Kapoor in the posters to make him suitable for Deepika in Love Aaj Kal. But in the film Deepika couldn't match up to Saif's bravura performance. As the suave Jai and the solid Veer, Saif was super. Big scene? Saif's dramatic monologue at
Deepika's wedding.
5.That Irrfan Khan makes it to the list of Bollywood biggies mirrors the changing face of the film industry. His Billu act was top-notch. Big scene? As Shah Rukh gives the moving speech in the end,
Irrfan simply walks away, making you reach for your rumaal.
QUEEN
1.This one was the most convincing win in the Puja poll as Priyanka Chopra for Fashion swept the Best Actress stakes. Jaya Bachchan may not agree, Ashutosh Gowariker may think otherwise but almost 65 per cent of our readers believe Priyanka as Meghna Mathur was the best leading lady act between that Puja and this Puja. Big scene? When she realises in front of the mirror how low she has stooped to conquer the fashion world.
2.To win a silver with your Bollywood debut is a dream start and Asin, who has been a star down south, sure knows that. As the cheeky but loveable Kalpana in Ghajini, the Malayalee girl was a knockout with the best debut in a while. Big scene? When she gives the interview to the journalist on her affair with Aamir.
3.Another debutante. Another super start.
Bangalore model Anushka Sharma couldn't have dreamt of a bigger launchpad for herself. An Aditya Chopra film opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The girl delivered by mixing the right measures of seriousness and sauciness. Big scene? When she announces to Shah Rukh's Suri that she can be his wife but she can't love him.
4.She's the pretty woman of Bollywood, and now she can even act! Katrina Kaif has proved herself the hard way, first with Namastey London, now New York and up next Rajneeti. In New York, she was stunning, both as college girl and as wife-mom. Big scene? When she tells John how she knew all along that he was a terrorist.
5.Just like Irrfan, our very own Konkona Sensharma is now becoming a mainstay in those big Bollywood movies. Her Luck By Chance act was expectedly right up there. Big scene? When Farhan's Vikram comes begging in the end, Konkona's Sona holds her ground and sends him back.
