How much of a kamina if Fhahid Kapoor?

In anticipation of the film Kaminey, work can seem endless, but till the golden moment arrives, SBO presents you the star of the film, Shahid Kapoor who tells you what to expect from the film, working with Vishal Bhardwaj and doing a double role for the first time.

The development of Kaminey

I am used to talking about Kaminey and being called a kamina. When I met Vishal, he told me that he wanted to make his version of a commercial film. Then he narrated a few concepts to me and told me that the one with twin brothers which was his favourite. He said both of them have speech defects; one stammers and the other lisps. This I found very novel, new and interesting. To have two characters who talk differently throughout the film can be very entertaining and also win them a lot of sympathy from the audience. I loved the script. Vishal said he was attempting a genre that has not been attempted in India before which is that of a caper or pulp film. This genre has been made very famous by Quentin Tarantino who made Pulp Fiction, Guy Ritchie who made Snatch and Martin Scorcese who made The Departed. The specialty of the genre is that it is very real yet very glamourous and entertaining. I think Kaminey is the first film in India which is a pulp film.
Expectations from Kaminey

I really expect people to like this film, as I do for each film but Kaminey is a very different film for me and for the country. It's an attempt to do something new. We knew that people would either like or hate the first promo and we are glad with the good response. Even with the film, they will either love it or hate it because it cannot grown on you.

It is a very important film for me because it took a lot of guts to do this film. I had to think a lot before doing it because though it is in the commercial format with the twin brothers and love story, the presentation, look and music is very different from what I have done before, especially the character of Charlie. The film is essentially about Charlie and Guddu.
Kaminey is different and path-breaking

The audience is used to seeing me in very soft, sweet, chocolaty, nice and romantic roles like Vivaah, Jab We Met and Kismat Konnection. If Kaminey works for me, then it will open new doors for me professionally and Indian audiences will experience new avenues of story-telling.

When Lagaan released there were apprehensions about a film set in a village with the hero in a dhoti, during Rang De Basanti, people wondered who would watch a serious political film and even during Chak De India, people said that nobody wanted to see a film with a female hockey team. Every 4-5 years, a film has come that has redefined Indian cinema. These films are hatke and their success is of utmost importance because our creative space is very limited and we need to expand it. Today when I see these films, I feel that I don't need to do the same types of stories and characters. It is likely that the audience will like something new if you present it nicely and in a way that they connect to it.
Working with Vishal Bhardwaj

Every actor should work with Vishal once. He makes you see a different side of yourself. We all know about our comfort zones but Vishal picks you up from there and throws you in a different space. I didn't have any reference points for Charlie and Guddu so I discovered something new about myself.
Bringing Charlie to life

I cannot choose between Charlie and Guddu. I think they complement each other. Charlie is incomplete without Guddu and vice versa. Together they cover almost all aspects of the human mind. Both of the roles were very difficult for me. Charlie's physical appearance is very different from mine. Vishal told me that he wanted to do something that would shock audiences, making them say 'Ye Shahid hain ke kaun hai!'

I had to work out for one year and follow a strict diet.

Charlie is best friends with Mikhail and they are very thick. There is no love story like a relationship between them (laughs).

The industry has good actors, directors and composers. A good script is a rarity. So when you get one, you must grab it with both hands. I am not only a star. I am an actor also. A star has to look good and an actor has to do good work. I have tried to look good as Charlie also. There is a stereotype that negative characters are ugly but people need to love Charlie even though he is a kamina. He is wrong but you must like him because he has a clean heart.
Bringing Guddu to Life

Guddu has a stammering problem. We wanted that to be real; not like a caricature. Vishal is very particular about all this. We met ENT specialists, doctors, speech therapist to discuss why people stammer. There are stammering clubs. We met a few people from there and we incorporated one of the touching stories they told us. We were so moved that we had to include it as it was very authentic and touching. The scene about that story in the movie has also turned out really sweet. We asked people at the stammering clubs what they thought about the hero having speech defects and they said it was a very proud moment for them.

Guddu and Sweety are together and their romance is an important part of the film.
Twin Confusion

I played both characters simultaneously. I am very different from Guddu and Charlie.

We shot both characters on the same location. It was difficult. One character says 'ff' for everything. So I had to keep that in mind during the action, romantic, emotional and crying scenes. Stammering is a much internalized process. You need to get into a different state of mind.

I had to put hair extensions eight times; going from one character to another. I had to work out one year for the 'running with the horses' scene. That included a lot of sacrifices like not allowed to eat a few things. We shot many scenes during rainy nights at filthy locations near gutters, at old rail yards with rotting food and mice. There were several things like that as Kaminey has been the most difficult film of my career.

I have met twins before but not twins with speech defects. In the film, the speech defect is new. It adds novelty and potential to dialogues and gives a lot of scope for interesting characterization. There are a lot of scenes in the movie where you don't know whether to laugh or cry. It is an interesting space to do and see something new.
The Kamina title

I asked Vishal why he wanted to call the film Kaminey. He is not a frivolous director. He knows what he is doing. He has always tried to make good cinema. He believed that the title represents every character in the film, barring one who isn't kamina. Everyone is badmaash, quick, matlabi, naughty, negative. No one is innocent or seedha. Everyone is a luccha-lafanga.

I am sure I must have done something kamina but I have not thought that act of mine to be kamina (laughs). Of course I must have used the kamina word as we all heard it in Sholay: kutte, kamine, tera khoon pee jaaongaa.

The title track (Meri aarzoo kamini, mere khwaab bhi kaminey) is very introspective. It tells us that we all have negative thoughts but what matters is what we do about or how we control them. That is what life is about.
