PUTRAJAYA: The Government has pledged to donate RM3mil to the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) next week.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the donation would help fund programmes and schemes set up for athletes under the foundation.

In his speech, Najib said sports best reflected the 1Malaysia concept as all sportsmen play without racial or religious boundaries.

"They display the spirit of 1Malaysia, representing the country as one and the principle of being inclusive.

"Through sports, we can understand the meaning of 1Malaysia," he said before officially launching the foundation at a charity dinner themed Anda Tetap Dihati at Marriott Hotel here last night.

Najib said the athletes' welfare deserved to be championed by the foundation as they have shown excellent sportsmanship through their contributions to the country.

Foundation patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor in her speech thanked the Government for its support and contributors to the "1 Ringgit, 1 Malaysia" campaign, set up last month to collect donations to be channelled to help former athletes.

Guests were also surprised with the special attendance of Bollywood actors Datuk Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee who flew in from Mumbai.

Shah Rukh also made a personal donation of RM50,000 to the foundation.
