Shooting for the Bollywood film "My Name Is Khan" inside the CBS 5 newsroom.
Film crews made a movie Monday in the CBS 5 newsroom. Millions of people are going to see it. It's going to be a blockbuster. But at the moment, they'd rather you know nothing about it at all.
Normally, San Francisco's Film Commission Director Stephanie Coyote loves talking about the city's film projects. But about the film "My Name Is Khan," she said, "Very little, nothing at all in fact. Top secret."
The reason is the movie star Shahrukh Khan. He's been called a combination of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in the world of Bollywood.
Recently the crew, most of them from Mumbai, was shooting on the San Francisco coast when a boat went by. Coyote said the reaction was immediate. People freaked.
"They got out their cell phones and called people on the mainland to let them know this actor was at this location." Coyote said. "And the next thing they knew there were 50 screaming, yelling, excited people. Makes it difficult to shoot sound when there's a lot of people screaming."
People working on the crew CBS 5 approached were warned not to discuss anything.
We can tell you this: The movie is about a Forest Gump-like character on a trek across the U.S. to talk to the President. The odyssey is picked up by a TV crew. That's why they were at CBS 5.
CBS 5 asked Pravin Dabbis, a well-known supporting Bollywood actor if he wanted to know anything about being a newsman. "It's a little late, because I've already done quite a few scenes," Dabbis said.
Khan wasn't in the scenes shot Monday, nor was he at CBS 5. Khan's films are huge. They have been among the highest grossing in Bollywood history.
