That's great! I've noticed this trend quite often though. Most of the people who arent familiar with asoka's tale to begin with or dont have much knowledge of its history really loved the movie, perhaps because they took it for what it was.But mostly, I think it was rejected because of historical inaccuracy, becuase most people who watched it wihtout that cultural bias were all praise!
Oh it definitely has its flaws, I'm not denying it. Like in one dialogue, a druankard man tells Srk taht he should guide the bail gaadi coz "peeke gaadi chalaana buri baat hoti hai", and that personally made me laugh placed in the context of that time. And it made me wonder if such dialogues were put in their purposely to draw similarities between the two time periods or were they just slip ups.
Sometimes I didnt understand the pure hindi, but the mitigated language in the other portions helped tons. No doubt, that hte movie was altered quite a bit to suit commercial purposes, especially with the item number. Hated it, was thrown in for no reason at all. And like someone else mentioned, hated Johnny Lever's standup comedy routine.
But for various other reasons, I thought the movie was very well made. Mainly dialogues (in some portions) cinematography, locations, acting (was a strength according to me), and the music.

Umm no, most of my friends who are non-Asian and have no knowledge of Indian history/hindi films disliked it as well. Thankfully, they watched this from the library DVD collection (I have yet to figure out what this crappy movie is doing in public libraries😳) and not the theatre. Besides the historical inaccuracy, there were other major problems with this movie. The acting was horrendous. Over acting to the max by both the leads. Not surprising to me ofcourse. And since I do watch Hindi films and have fairly good knowledge about Indian history, I'll have to say that historical inaccuracy wasn't the only problem. Did anyone notice the pattern of the dialogues? Sometimes they talked like they were in the 21st century and sometimes the language and dilect was very ancient! Like....hello! Can we at least expect some consistency! Also, it came across as a nonsensical skin flick, not a sensible film. There really was no need for the overshow of sexuality in that movie. And why was that item song place in there? The lyrics in that song were so horrible. Sure, I think RajLakshmi is hot and all, but poor girl was just wasted in that crappy, forgettable confused song!I watched it in 2003, I'll have to watch it again to pinpoint its uncountable flaws!
You cannot count flaws in an artistic piece of work Its just people's perception of things. One thing which is piece of crap for somone can be intrinsic piece of art for somone else. Anywayz making a movie in India is such a hard task. Because hitting the demographic of every person in India is a very hard task as there is so much diversity in people's interests, likings and social standards. While making a movie a producer has to think of people living in metros, suburbs, villages. People of all the different religions and people speaking different languages. If the movie makers make a movie with pure dialect of the era of Asoka than more than half of India wont understand it and if the producers make it in today's language then people would question its autheticity. Therefore they go for a middle way. Some of the artistic creativites are sacrifized to meet general publics standards. Just imagine in India a regressive soap opera gets more trps than a cricket match. So who knows what works and what does not work. I think the producers of Asoka tried to give a right balance of things and made a nice movie. And ofcourse as any piece of art some find it to be intriguing and some find it disgusting. Which is natural! But that cannot deny the fact that there are some people who liked the movie and find it to be absolutely amazing!
