i dont care about anyone,i just feel ar rahman is the best composer and he deaserved the academy awards may be jai ho was not the best creation of rahman sir but it was defintely the best among the nominated ,( though only one other song was nominated with jai ho ,still if there were other nominations ,i strongly believe jai ho would have won no matter what )and the song is very inspirational too.

'Jai Ho' did not deserve an Oscar: Jagjit Singh

New Delhi: The world might be ga ga over A R Rahman's Oscar winning composition 'Jai Ho' but legendary Ghazal singer, Jagjit Singh finds the song overrated.

The 68-year-old legend who is famous for his candid nature believes that getting the Academy award was a golden moment in Indian history but the song per se did not deserve the honour.

"Getting an Oscar is no doubt a great achievement but the song, for which we got the award, is not so special.

Frankly I did not understand on what basis it was awarded," Singh told reporters at a function where he released his new album 'Inteha.'

The Ghazal maestro, said that he did not understand the lyrics of the composition and why it has become so popular that everybody from Indian political parties to International pop bands is eager to use it.

When referred that lyrics for the song has been penned by Gulzar with whom he has given many hits, Singh said, "When I work with Gulzar Sahab I categorically tell him to write such poetry which my fans and I can understand."

Singh, who has composed some hit music for films like 'Arth' and 'Saath Saath' in the 80's does not seem to have a good opinion about today's Bollywood music as he stated, "it lacks profound poetry and soulful tunes".

The singer who started his journey in the film industry as a music composer with 'Prem Geet' in 1981 said, "It (Bollywood music) is cheap music just meant for discotheques with nonsensical lyrics."

Taking a potshot at 'Delhi-6' hit song 'Masakali', Singh said that he was puzzled with the usage of offbeat words in the lyrics.

The legend, who is accredited with bringing Ghazal genre, which was previously restricted to the elite classes, to the masses, felt that Ghazal scenario in India was degrading as it lacks good songwriters and passionate singers.

The 'Baat nikalegi to fir' singer, felt that Ghazals were also lacking media patronage.

Talking about his idol, Pakistan's famous Ghazal singer, Mehendi Hassan who is reportedly facing an acute economic crunch said, "Government cannot take care of everybody. Successful singers should invest at the right time to secure their future and then come forward to promote others as well."

His latest album was launched 35,000 feet above sea level in an airplane by sitarist Anoushka Shankar. Singh said, "The album coming after two years was long due for my fans."

All 8 tracks of the album, comprising mostly romantic songs and some inspired by philosophy of life, will be released in DVDs and VCDs. "Today it has become important to make videos of the songs to attract the young crowd. In a way its a good effort as it exposes youngsters to Ghazals and generate their interest in this, otherwise neglected genre of music."

🤔🤔 Wonder if the grape harvest is incredibly sour this year???? Hopefully the mangoes will be sweet and put the taste back in Jagjit Singh's mouth while his feet are firmly planted on the ground. What .......a......... looser!!!!!
Rehmanmiyya laagey raho........you were great........Jai Ho!! Mere daaftar mein subb gorey aap kih dhunoh keh diwane hain......you Sir have a universal appeal and are not locked down in the same monotonous style....I never have to bother with the UV meter when burning Singhs music since his range is sooo predictable and boring.

This is not the first time Jagjit Singh has critised and been jealous of the good work of someone. I have seen him on the TV critising other gazal singers that he is the best in the world as gazal singer and no one can be better. This Rehman composition has been praised and liked by the world and he got the oscar for that, for him its not a great song. Shame really when these so called talented people open their big mouths with so much Bull****. Keep on Mr. Rehman with your great work, you have made us proud and put indian music to the level of oscars. 👏

What these people don't get is that the one can win only if the songs are submitted and gets nominated. Yes, Roja, Bombay and several of his tamil compositions were far better but these movies werent nominated or recognised. Some weren't even sent to the oscars and indian entrees so wheres the chance of his songs being nominated.

SD got the recognition and popularity, hence the songs got popular too so it was nominated and it won.

Jai ho is a nice feel good song. I personally liked the MIA song when the kids are travelling in the train.

I agree that 'Jai ho' as a song is not Rahman's greatest composition....he has given far more brilliant music in the past....but sometimes a person is not awarded for the right movie/song....this happens with acting honors as welll.....Rahman deserved an Oscar cuz he IS that brilliant of a composer....at this point, it hardly matters to me what song he won it for.

On another note, I did enjoy 'Jai ho' cuz it is still a good song.

I'm surprised at the dig about Masakali though.....I thought it was an intriguingly written song....something different from the usual fare.....Prasoon Joshi did a good job with the lyrics I felt.

''Jai Ho'' might not be Rahman's best composition but his other compositions were not sent for the oscars so its silly to say that he deserved an award for those songs but not for ''Jai Ho''.........he is a brilliant composer & deserves all the accolades he gets.....👍🏼

Even Rehman admitted that Jai Ho isn't his best work . He has done much better. I am still happy for Rehman. And I agree with Jagjit Singh.
