Here's what the 13 newcomers are doing in 2009
Buzz18

2008 will probably be remembered as the year of recession. Back home over 60-odd Bollywood projects have been stalled. Aspiring technicians and artistes hoping to make a debut are still waiting in the wings. But there were those who managed to get their first break in the Hindi film industry just before the markets came to a standstill. Here's taking a look at 13 such prominent names and where their careers are heading.

Asin Thottumkal

Voted as Bollywood's hottest Southern import, Asin Thottumkal made her debut in Bollywood with Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini. The film went on to become the highest grossing Hindi movie of all time. However for most part, Asin continued to remain in the backdrop even as Aamir Khan hogged all the limelight.

Current projects: Vipul Shah's London Dreams and Bharat Bala's trilingual international project titled 19 Steps. For some reason Asin has managed to irk quite a few producers. There have been rumours that she's been rather unprofessional and is difficult to work with.

Anushka Sharma

She played the role of Taaniji in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, a character that was arguably every middle class Indian man's dream come true. Rab Ne went on to become the second biggest grosser of 2008 and made Anushka Sharma a household name.

Current project: Anushka has signed a three-film deal with the production house. So her next two films will be with Yash Raj. Currently she is said to be working on a yet-to-be-titled venture opposite Shahid Kapur to be directed by Parmeet Sethi.

Mimoh Chakraborty

Now here is a guy who probably stands no chance in Bollywood. Yet Mithun Chakraborty's son Mimoh dared to do the impossible. Predictably his debut vehicle Jimmy turned out to be a disaster. And what a disaster it was. Critics had a gala time laughing out at scenes where they were supposed to cry and vice versa. Having written off the film, unfortunately Jimmy never even found a mention at the Golden Kela Awards ' India's version of the Razzies.

Current projects:
Despite his laughable debut, Mimoh already has a film lined up. Titled The Murderer, the film is complete but has no buyers. The producer Salim Akhtar however is cursing his luck even as Mimoh has signed a film for Popcorn Entertainment called Loot, which stars Suniel Shetty, Govinda and Javed Jaffrey.

Hurman Baweja

Son of filmmaker Harry Baweja, Hurman made his debut in the disaster called Love Story 2050. A sci-fi flick, Love Story was such a dud that industry insiders insist the makers couldn't even recover the cost of the film. Adlabs is said to have lost Rs 40 crore on this venture. Hurman also starred in another film called Victory, which also bombed.

Current projects: Despite his failures most critics agree that Hurman is a sincere actor. Many observers and Hurman supporters are keeping their fingers for his next ' Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee? which is set to release in the next few months and Anees Bazmi's It's My Life.

Mugdha Godse

Priyanka Chopra who had a promising Dostana later in the year may not have been banking so much on Fashion so much. In that sense the actress who really got the most benefit was Mugdha Godse. Playing a small time model who helps Priyanka resurrect her flagging career, Mugdha found herself in the spotlight. It also helped that the film was a hit.

Current projects: The dusky actress is working on two other projects ' one Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail with Neil Nitin Mukesh and the other Ajay Devgan's All The Best which also stars Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Fardeen Khan among others.

Adhyayan Suman

Much as you might want to believe, Adhyayan Suman's debut film was not Raaz ' The Mystery Continues. Son of television star Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan had made his debut in the immensely forgettable Haal-E-Dil. He played a lover boy and the film flopped miserably. However with shades of grey in Raaz, Adhyayan's character managed to stay with the audiences. The film went on to become a hit and Adhyayan's affair with co-star Kangana Ranaut managed to hold the young star in the limelight.

Current projects: Adhyayan is currently working on two films. The first is Jashn, Mahesh Bhatt's comeback movie as a director and the second is Fast Forward a film co-starring Vinod Khanna among others.

Rajeev Khandelwal

You would not have expected a television star to make a smooth transition into films. But as luck would have it Rajeev Khandelwal, who played an immensely popular character called Sujal on the small screen, hit it big with Aamir. The film told the story of a young Muslim man who returns to Mumbai from the UK and finds himself at the mercy of religious extremists who want to carry out a bombing in the city. The film was one of the sleeper hits of the year and managed to do good business as the word of mouth had only good things to say.

Current project: Despite the unexpected success, Rajeev Khandelwal currently has just one film called Peter Gaya Kaam Se.

Sikandar

There are some who have the looks chiselled for Bollywood and there are those who don't. Many believe Kirron Kher's son Sikandar unfortunately falls in the latter category. His debut film Summer 2007 and then Woodstock Villa did create some amount of curiosity but along the way got lost altogether. Playing a conman in the film Sikandar barely managed to hold fort even as the film disappeared from the theatres.

Current projects: None! Industry observers believe he might be in a better position to negotiate if he starts doing negative roles. It remains to be seen however if Sikandar manages to carve a niche for himself in the industry.

Adah Sharma

Playing the possessed woman in Vikram Bhatt's 1920, Adah Sharma showed some amount of promise if not a lot of it. The film did fairly decent business at the box office even though it was critically written off.

Current projects: Adah will star in the next two Vikram Bhatt films ' one is called Phir and another untitled project.

Anurag Sinha

Subhash Ghai's first box office disaster of 2008 before Yuvvraaj was Black and White. Anurag Sinha a young actor played the role of a terrorist who makes his way into a professor's house. Unfortunately for Anurag, the film barely belonged to him. Critics rightly point out that it was the much older Anil Kapoor who was the real hero of the film. The actor found himself being sidelined even as the two biggies ' Ghai and Kapoor ' hogged all the limelight.

Current projects: None! Observers suggest that even though Anurag Sinha held/holds a lot of promise, the actor does not have good PR machinery in place.

Sonal Chauhan

With Jannat, this sexy star found herself in the limelight. The film, based on cricket, was a surprise hit riding on the IPL wave and making the most of the lack of releases during the time. Playing Emraan Hashmi's girlfriend, Sonal managed to make her presence felt.

Current projects: Not surprisingly, Sonal Chauhan has bagged two major projects, though she refuses to discuss about them. Meanwhile the actress is already doing a film down south titled Cheluvine Nina Nodalu, starring Shivraaj Kumar.

Shweta Kumar

In Karzzzz, Indra Kumar's debutante daughter played a catering college student. Many critics believe it's what she could well been doing in real life too. Acting was clearly not her cup of tea and Karzzzz was definitely not the kind of film anyone would have wanted to associate with. The film failed and Shweta disappeared from the limelight even before you could count the number of zees in her film's title

Current projects: None! No price for guessing why.

Prachi Desai

Yet another TV star, Prachi Desai made her big screen debut with Farhan Akhtar in Rock On!! Playing the rocker-turned-banker's wife, Prachi Desai managed to hold her own despite the movie being a guy flick. The movie itself went on to become a major hit earning Farhan the best newcomer award.

Current projects: Known as Bani to her television audiences, Prachi Desai is working on to films, Rumi Jaffrey's Life Record and Milan Luthria's Once A Upon A Time.
