After playing a schiznophrenic in 15 Park Avenue, a journalist in Page 3, a jilted lover in Life... In A Metro and a married woman in Dil Kabaddi, Konkona Sen Sharma is all set to work wonders on a new role -- that of a struggling actress in Luck By Chance.
Directed by first timer Zoya Akhar, the film also stars Farhan Akhtar, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla, Isha Sharvani, with an extended cameo from Hrithik Roshan.
Konkona chats with Nithya Ramani about the film, Zoya and her celebrated mother Aparna Sen.
What is Luck By Chance about?
It is a film about the Hindi film industry and the people in it -- from leading stars to the spot boys; whether sheer luck or talent helps.
What is your role?I play Sona Mishra, a small town girl with big dreams. Her ambition to become an actor leads her from Kanpur to Mumbai where she does lead roles in B-grade movies.
Tell us about your look in the movie.
My character has been living in Mumbai for two or three years, and has done quite a few films. So she is a person who is very fashion conscious and very aware of her looks. She may not buy expensive or designer clothes, but will make sure she has the right shoes and the right bags to go with them.
How was the experience of working with Zoya?I think she is awesome. The film will be awesome. Zoya is a director to watch out for. I hope to get a chance to work with her again. She is focussed and very confident behind the camera.
She is also very sensitive. She will come up to you and whisper what she wants rather than shout directions from across the room.
The film has many big names. How was the experience working with them?
Since I play a struggler in the film, I do not have scenes with Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Kapur. That's very sad because I would have loved to work with them. Farhan, on the other hand, got to interact with them.
Did Farhan give Zoya inputs in terms of direction?
There is nothing that I can think of. Maybe they discussed it at the script level when I wasn't there, I don't know. On the sets, we were all very clear about what we were doing and what we wanted.
Having seen you doing diverse roles, what is the kind of roles would you personally want or like to do?
I don't have any specific kind of roles. I would like to work in a nice happy atmosphere because at the end of the day, some things work, some don't. It's the relationships and interactions that are most important.
What would you say if you had to compare Zoya and your mother, Aparna Sen, as directors?
Just because they are both women? I have worked with Shonali Bose in Amu and she is a fabulous director. I don't think there is any difference between men and women directors. It is all how an individual thinks. I don't think it is correct to make differences based on gender. I loved Konkona's answer there. That was my reaction too, reading the question.
After Luck By Chance, there is Wake Up Sid and Mirch.
Mirch is Vinay Shukla's film and has four raunchy stories about four women. I play two of these women -- an ancient Rajasthani princess and a modern day Sindhi housewife. Raima Sen plays the other two women. It is very tastefully done.
I am also very excited about Ayyan Mukherjee's Wake Up Sid. I am cast opposite Ranbir Kapoor. My character is a catalyst to Ranbir's whole growing up process.
While shooting for Wake Up Sid, I discovered Ranbir is scared of pigeons! It was hilarious.
I wouldn't have guessed that, but I never got the vibe Ranbir was a tough guy anyway.😆
