Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Is Huge Overseas

Tuesday 9th December 2008 15.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has raked up a huge 16.50 crore from overseas. In North America it has grossed 6 crore, United Kingdom grossed 3 crore, Australia was 60 lakhs while UAE was a huge record breaking 4.75 crore. The opening is the second biggest ever after Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. The numbers in the traditional overseas markets North America and United Kingdom are big but not as huge as some in the trade were expecting. The other smaller and newer markets are huge especially UAE where all records have been smashed. The film is probably heading for total overseas business of 35-40 crore.

SRK charisma works wonders as Rab Ne... breaks all records

16 Dec 2008, 0020 hrs IST, Nandini Raghavendra, ET Bureau

MUMBAI: In spite of the number of brands he endorses, it is kind of funny to think of Shah Rukh Khan as a product and one which is endorsed by an Making of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi | Movie Review: RNBDJ
More Pictures
ISI mark.

But that is exactly how King Khan describes himself when asked what worked in driving people to the theatres to see his only release of the year—Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (RNBDJ)—which Khan says has collected Rs 6.9 crore on its first day across the 900 prints released across India (another 300 for the 30 overseas markets).

"I have become like an ISI mark on a product, so people think, 'dekh toh le, kuch toh hoga, since it is SRK and Adi together'," says the star exclusively to ET on the RNBDJ's trade figures.

Yash Raj Films (YRF) goes on to add that RNBDJ has broken all earlier opening weekend collection records for YRF. The film, according to them, has grossed about Rs 60 crore worldwide on its opening weekend, and has surpassed Dhoom 2, which is regarded as one of the highest grossing films of all time.

In the Middle-East, RNBDJ has set a new record as the highest opening film of all-time. While Dhoom 2 had grossed about $1.86 million across its entire run, RNBDJ has grossed $1 million on its opening weekend alone.

In India, in spite of the critics panning the film, SRK seems to be the single biggest reason post-26/11 to drive people back to the movie halls in such big numbers. Compare this with Khan's Om Shanti Om (Rs 6.6 crore) and the Akshay Kumar-starrer Singh is Kingg (Rs 7.1 crore) both of which released not in such uncertain times.

While Khan has been accessible to the media, YRF, being a privately held company, has always been guarded in their financial communication. A bad run with their movies this year, from Tashaan to Bachna..., has seen them bend a little whereas for Khan, it is critical to establish his supremacy at the box office with contenders increasing every day.

"We were prepared for a slow Friday and it was so till the first two-and-half shows but then the movie picked up and the collections surprised both Adi and me," says a cautious Khan.

So what worked to add up to the crores? The only plausible answer seems SRK though wearing his humble hat, Khan says: "A star gets in the initial eyeballs, plus he/she comes in with his own skill set of acting and reputation which definitely adds up but I think I say this for all the top stars that none of us are beyond the film. This is an experiential film which will grow on the viewer. It has nobility, which will take a little while to settle in, as you need to sense it," says Khan.

The critics are something which Khan has lived with through his 62 films. And he adds that he has never been part of a single film where "both critique and commerce" have been in his favour. Not even for Chak De or for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

As for the dreaded recession word, Khan's take is that of the economics that he recalls from his days of academia in college, the entertainment and cosmetic industry were the two recession-proof industries..

Rab Ne...... sets a new record

Indo-Asian News Service
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 (New Delhi)

Yash Raj Films' Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi that hit the screens on Dec 12 has proven to be a boon for the production house breaking its jinx of delivering duds this year. The film has broken all earlier opening weekend collection records for Yash Raj Films, grossing approximately Rs 600 million worldwide on its opening weekend.

The banner's earlier releases this year, Roadside Romeo, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Tashan were cold-shouldered by the audience despite major pre-release promotion though Ranbir Kapoor starrer Bachna Ae Haseeno managed to do average business at the box office.

However, Rab Ne... has given Yash Raj Films a new lease of life. It was believed in the trade circles that the production house was releasing the film at a wrong time - when global economic slump was on and soon after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Directed by filmmaker Aditya Chopra, the film is Shah Rukh Khan's first release of the year and the first Shah Rukh-Aditya Chopra collaboration in over eight years after post Mohabbatein (2000).

"It's after a long time that a good movie has came out of the Yash Raj camp and that too with Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh coming together after eight years," said Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor.

"Though the collections for the movie have not been cent per cent, they have been beyond expectations so far. It is the first big release after Dostana and has no competition till the next two weeks until Ghajini releases on Dec 25. So, it has full chances of reaping the benefit," he added.

Set in Amritsar, Rab Ne... is the story of a mismatched couple played by Shah Rukh and debutante Anushka Sharma and how the pair explores love in the backdrop of a dance competition.

According to a statement released by Yash Raj Films on Monday, the light-hearted romantic comedy has crossed boundaries and even set records in the Middle East. The film has also received a grand opening across all overseas markets, including Britain, US, Australia, Europe, Africa, and other territories in Asia.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi On A Steady Run!!

Wednesday 17th December 2008 09.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is continuing with rock steady business. The business on Tuesday was nearly as much as Monday at many places.

The trending is suggesting Blockbuster business in the North and even other areas like Mumbai, Nizam and Mysore could reach there but will depend on how the second weekend fares. Even a circuit like CI has grossed 85 lakhs in five days which is just 10% short of the more preferred type of films in the circuit like Dhoom 2, Om Shanti Om, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng.

The first week is almost certain to be the second biggest first week ever after Singh Is Kinng.
