September 29, 2008, (Sawf News) - The serial bombing in some busy markets of the capital on Saturday, September 13, which killed at least 20 people and injured 90, has thrown up just the hero our country really deserves - Abhishek Bachchan!
Admittedly, Abhishek was a hero before the bomb blasts. Indeed, 'heroism' runs in his family, since he is the son of Bollywoods biggest hero -
Amitabh Bachchan, but so far his heroism had been of the tinsel variety; confined to the screen. Following the blasts, the Indian press is alluding to Abhishek as a real life hero, giving him the respect that it often does not give its soldiers, because he providentially escaped certain death in the pursuit of his duty to promote himself and his films! Shortly after the Delhi bombings, Amitabh Bachchan blogged on how Abhishek was on his way to Connaught Place before the bombing took place, but turned back because of a traffic snarl.

Photo Credit: Sawf News/File Amitabh made it sound as if Abhishek would have come in harm's way had he not turned back, which is not true because Abhishek was not headed for Central Park where the bombing took place. Even if he had attended the promotional event he would not have been harmed! Connaught place is a sprawling area several square kilometers in extent and Central Park is a part of Connaught place. Abhishek Bachchan was in no more or less danger that day than anyone else in Delhi. According to Amitabh, after Abhishek returned to his hotel he heard about the bomb blasts and promptly called his family to let them know he was fine. He also called off a promotional event in Delhi the next day in deference to the blast victims. Amitabh's reference to Abhishek in the context of the bomb blast probably stopped short of being a blatant image building exercise, but the Indian press, which specializes in concocting stories around virtually no substance, took over from where Amitabh left off. It first started with stories on how Abhishek escaped the bombing but got increasingly more creative in the days since, as it went about the task of fabricating its new hero. Very soon the press reports were saying Abhishek 'possibly escaped death' and then he 'narrowly escaped death.' Here is an example from a report in a national news paper today. "[Abhishek] was recently saved from the grave bomb attacks that shook Delhi! He was only a few meters away from the site where the bombing happened." He was actually kilometers away! Surprisingly, or not surprisingly, the Bachchans played along. Amitabh, usually very prompt in butting heads against perceived press falsehoods on his blog, hasn't made any effort to correct the misconception. Abhishek too has been clearly carried away by the exaggerated press reports, going by the following remark that he made to the press. "These bombings are really shattering. Thank God, I got saved. But, whatever happened is really sad and I hope and pray that this is not repeated," he says. The upcoming release of Abhishek starrer
Drona has much to do with the projection of Abhishek Bachchan as a real life hero. The question is, is it ethical? Amitabh Bachchan, probably taken in by the adulatory comments on his blog following the September 13 blast post, repeated his perfidy following the lone blast in Mehrauli on Saturday, September 27. (The comments on his blog are carefully screened, something that Mr Bachchan denies.) He took to his blog once again yesterday to grandly announce a cancellation of Abhishek's visit to Delhi on Sunday to promote Drona, saying doing so would be too insensitive. "But my being in Delhi and interacting with huge crowds would create an additional pressure on the security arrangements and the administration. So I have canceled our promotional events in Delhi on Sunday," Abhishek added, speaking to the press. It is possible, that the cancellation was requested by the Delhi administration, in which case both the father and son duo should give that as the reason for the cancellation when addressing the public, not their profound sensitivity. If the cancellation was not requested by the administration, it was obviously not called for and is nothing more than grandstanding, in rather bad taste.
Time for a reality check folks!
