The new look of the Filmfare Awards

The Filmfare Awards event has been completely revamped and is an exclusive event from now on

With award functions growing like weeds on every other TV channel, the entertainment industry's oldest award ceremony the Filmfare Awards is feeling the heat.

A representation of Preity's gown
And in a bid to maintain their exclusivity and distinction, this year the Filmfare Awards will be a small black tie event with only the crme de la crme of the industry allowed in.

Says a member on the board of Filmfare, "We want to make the Filmfare Awards a close-knit event for the film fraternity to interact with each other. These days, award functions are not exclusive for film personalities, who have to rub shoulders with income-tax officers and politicians and their families. There are about 7,000 guests at any award function and everyone is allowed in. This is our attempt to bring back a level of dignity and credibility to award functions in the country. So this year's Filmfare Awards will only be of the fraternity, for the fraternity and by the fraternity."

"For the first time in the history of Filmfare, the function will be an indoor event, the venue being the Yash Raj Studios at Andheri. "The venue is a complete contrast from our previous venues which were huge grounds around the city. We have sent out only 700 invitations, 500 of whom will be celebrities. Also, no guests will be allowed in. The cards have the names of the celebrities embossed on them, so they won't be transferable," adds Filmfare's board member.

Does that mean that the press won't be allowed in either? "They will be allowed in but only on the red carpet. Unfortunately, there won't be enough space for them in the Studio 1 of Yash Raj , where the awards will be conducted," adds the board member.

A representation of Priyanka's gown
The buzz goes that the celebrities are extremely excited about this formal Oscar-like affair. The member says, "Yes, the celebrities are thrilled that they will have some privacy with their own fraternity. They are busy losing weight and contacting their designers to figure out what to wear. No sneakers, no jeans or casuals will be allowed. It's going to be a stylish event with Kareena Kapoor and Preity Zinta opting for gowns."

Another striking change in this function is that there will be no live performances. The board member adds, "Performances will be recorded separately, interspersed with the show when it is televised. Also the jury has both national as well as internationally renowned personalities. Believe me, it will be special!"

Who is wearing what?

Falguni Peacock who will be designing for Priyanka Chopra says, " We have yet to finalise the dress, but it will be a long , flowy outfit either in emerald green, or cobalt blue, two colours that suit Priyanka very well."

Manish Malhotra will be designing for Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Kareena Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar. He says, " I will decide in the next few days as to who is wearing what. I will also be designing for Sridevi's performances. I am very excited. Kareena's gown is also being decided, and it will be keeping with her style- smart and yet not in your face.

Neeta Lulla will be designing for Rani Mukherji. She says, " I'm meeting Rani tomorrow to decide her look. I'll probably be able to tell you in a day or two."

Shah Rukh Khan defiant of critics!

Bollywood Trade News Network

After a month of public voting, radio presenters Raj and Pablo finally revealed the BBC Asian Network Film Caf Award winners – the only 'audience voted online Bollywood award' in the UK.

Shah Rukh Khan won the Best Villain award for his controversial performance in the remake of classic Bollywood film DON. His performance in DON received as many criticisms as it did applaud. Shah Rukh was asked if he now felt vindicated in light of the public votes that he received.

Shah Rukh said, "No, you feel vindicated if you believe in the people who give the negative reactions and I never believe in that because it was very clearly a modern day combined with the old DON version and it was targeted at an audience, which may not have seen the old DON. We can just assume that the older audience did not like the film but the younger audiences, who we aimed the film at really enjoyed it. I feel I did a good job and I liked what I did in DON.

Shah Rukh was even more defiant towards his critics when he spoke to Film Caf about his role in KHABHI ALVIDA NAA KHENA, where he plays an adulterous husband.

"I have been working for many years ...I get surprised that critics get confused between the actor and the role. In KHABHI ALVIDA NAA KHENA I play a guy who is not nice, sleeps with someone else's wife but that's a character. You play a grittier character the critics have a problem with that. It's the ticket paying audience that counts at the end of the day," remarked SRK.

Aamir Khan, voted Best Actor in the awards, spoke exclusively to Film Caf to explain why these awards mean more to him than industry awards.

"I'm overwhelmed by the response of the audience. It was a difficult film to do as an actor. I am really moved by the response. Film and award ceremonies are so subjective and I don't take award nights serious - the film has been made for the audience and they have loved it and that is of prime importance to me."

RANG DE BASANTI has done particularly well, winning the overall vote in four of the eight categories.

Other proud winners include:

Best Film – RANG DE BASANTI with 28% of the vote
Best Soundtrack - DON: The Chase Begins Again with 27%
Best Actor – Aamir Khan in RANG DE BASANTI with 29%
Best Actress – Rani in KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA with 23%
Best Supporting Actor – Abhisekh Bachan in KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA with 32%
Best Supporting Actress - Soha Ali Khan in RANG DE BASANTI
Best Director - Rakeysh Mehra for RANG DE BASANTI and Karan Johar FOR KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA both with 27% of the votes each
Best Villain – Shah Rukh Khan in DON with 44% of vote

Sizzling Stardust Award Bash

Greek sculptures of centaurs and glittering flashlights adorned the stage at the Max Stardust awards ceremony.

Amrita Arora and Kunal Kohli played hosts, amusing guests with occasional gags. The show opened with a glamourous Kangana Ranaut grooving to a medley. Shiamak Davar's dance troop did what they do best.

Embellishing the front row seats were Bollywood bigwigs like Sanjay Dutt, Mithunda with son Mimoh, Preity Zinta, Rakeysh Mehra, Sanjay Gadhvi, and Sonali Kulkarni. Not far behind were Boman Irani, Kunal Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Hema Malini, Shamir Tandon, Minissha Lamba and Upen Patel. Award-winners, who might have heard a word or two from little birdies, were also present - Ayesha Takia, Shiney Ahuja, and Kangana Ranaut to name a few. Amitabh Bachchan made a grand entry with to-be bahu Aishwarya Rai, just in time to receive a star-tipped statuette on behalf of son Abhishek. The junior Bachchan bagged an award for the Best Actor in Supporting Role for his stint in Karan Johar's KANK.

Entertaining dance acts were thrown in to keep the A-list audience alive. Bebo did a Don, inevitably followed by Yeh Mera Dil, which she had also performed with Helen at the Screen Awards. The audience swooned to Emraan Hashmi's moves. Lara Dutta's retro act was absolutely hot.

The awards night turned into a laugh riot when Kunal Kohli spontaneously walked down the stage to chat with the stars. He asked Sanjay Dutt, "Munnabhai Amerika jaakey George Bush ko kya kahenge?" Dutt quipped, "Gandhigiri sikhaa denge. "

Adnan Sami was overwhelmed by the rave reaction that he received from the audiences. The masses went crazy when the talented singer arrived on stage to present the award for The New Musical Sensation - Male. Kunal Kohli who shared the stage with the singer complimented Adnan for losing oodles of weight. Adnan accepted the compliment adding that "My mom says I've lost a human being."

Rajkumar Hirani won the Dream Director award for his brilliant directorial venture Lage Raho Munnabhai. Sanjay Dutt was the proud holder of 'Star of the Year' award for his lead performance in Lage Raho Munnabhai. Amitabh Bachchan mounted the stage to announce the award for the Star of the Year - Female. No points for guessing the winner! Aishwarya Rai courteously touched sasurji's feet before accepting the award from him. All's well that ends well. A fire-lit sky bade farewell to the guests as the curtains fell on Max Stardust awards night.

Hrithik on a roll

We caught Hrithik Roshan perfecting his every step while rehearsing for the 52nd Fair One Filmfare Awards, 2006

Aditi Jayakar Kane

Hrithik Roshan rehearsing for the 52nd Fair One Filmfare awards
When we read about Hrithik's illness in the papers just a day before his performance for the 52nd Fair One Filmfare Awards, 2006, we were wondering how the star would be able to perform. However, the moment Hrithik entered dressed in black body-hugging suit we forgot all our worries. Here was Hrithik with just as much Dhoom in him as ever before.

The performances of the ace dancer went off brilliantly, with Hrithik getting the sequence correct in just one take most of the time. But the dancers of Shiamak's troupe were equally a dream to watch with vivid outfits that looked stunning on perfectly sculptured bodies. Hrithik reviewed each performance of his on the screen and only okayed the takes when he was satisfied. In one incident, he wasn't too happy with a shot and told the light guys to black out everyone on stage but himself. It was done the change in effect was dramatic!

During another seqeunce Hrithik couldn't get his breakdance perfect as there wasn't enough friction on the stage. An assistant scraped the soles of his shoes with a knife to give him a better grip, but Hrithik would not perform till he had Pepsi. The Pepsi was brought, but far from drinking it, Hrithik poured it on the studio floor and stepped into it. The sticky nature of the cola gave him enough grip for a great performance!

Hrithik's first performance was his trademark ' Ek pal ka jeena' from Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, followed by 'Main hoon don', from Don. He also performed to 'Dhoom machale'. But 'Rock n roll soniye', which he has performed with kids was by far the most endearing. About 50 youngsters dressed in bright orange saris and black suits put their best foot forward along with Hrithik in this number.

The associate sponsors are Bisleri and Ashrafi Finance. The television partner is Sony Television.

This night has gotten hotter! Kareena and Karisma Kapoor have just walked in, dazzling those around with their beauty. Kareena's in a lovely blue outfit and Karisma is in a black dress. Whew! One of them is enough to send the crowed in a tizzy. Two of them together can kill!

Hottie Sanjay Dutt has just walked in, and he's definitely looking very stylish in his black jacket and tie! We don't see the Deadly Dutt quite often, but looks like even he couldn't miss out on the most happening event of the year. Dutt's been nominated in the Best Actor category for 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', and we're sure he's nervous about whether he'll clinch this one or not. Keep praying Sanjay! Incidentally, we hear the next film in the Munnabhai series is already well under way and this one is titled 'Munnabhai Chale Amrika'. We're looking forward to this one.

Also in blue this evening is the stunning Bipasha Basu, with a glittering diamond brooch on her shoulder. She's looking simply gorgeous. She's been nominated in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role catergory for 'Corporate'. John obviously wasn't able to accompany her – he's busy with his film 'Water's nomination for the Oscar in the meanwhile. We hear he's feeling lonely without Bips, and vice versa. Together or not, this couple is definitely a winner.

Time: 8.45 pm

Hrithik Roshan has arrived along with wife Suzanne and dad Rakesh Roshan. Hrithik has two nominations in the Best Actor category – for 'Dhoom 2' and 'Krrish'. He's also performed for the awards, and his act will be telecast with the Awards event on the small screen.

Rani Mukherjee has made an appearance and she's looking superb dressed in a beautiful black sari and a green blouse.

Time: 8.50 pm

Kirron Kher walks in and asked about Filmfare Awards' new avatar, she replies, "It's very refreshing. This should have happened much earlier."

Ask Aishwarya about how she's feeling about her own nomination in the Best Actress category for 'Dhoom 2' and Abhishek & Amitabh's nomination in the Best Actor in a Supporting role category for the same film 'KANK' and she replies, "It's a wonderful evening. Time: 9.15 pm

The Awards ceremony has just taken off... It's time to hold on to your seats and know who the winners are.

First up are the Technical Awards.

Time: 9.30 pm

A voice over (VO) introduced Karan Johar. Karan enters and talks about the Filmfare Awards down the years, and about its new avatar. He now calls on dignitaries to introduce the Filmfare Mascot Filmo.

Shah Rukh, the host for the evening, and Karan Johar are at their witty best. They're keeping the crowd entertained with their banter.

Rani is looking great. When asked who had designed her outfit, she replies, "Anuradha Vakil has designed my clothes." Ask her whom she's rooting for among the Best Actor nominees and she replies, "It's difficult to choose - but I think it's going to be a tough fight between Aamir and Shah Rukh! They're my favourites."

Time: 9.35 pm

The very first FairOne Filmfare Technical Awards has just been announced. And the very first Black Lady of the evening has gone to 'Krrish'! The Hrithik-starrer won for Best Special FX.

Time: 9.40 pm

Time: 9.45 pm

Starry starry night

The 52nd Fair One Filmfare Awards was as dramatic and entertaining as it could be…

The Yash Raj studios saw drama and show in equal measure as the 52nd Fair One Filmfare Awards 2006 unfurled on February 24, 2007. Among the first to arrive were the Bachchans accompanied by Amar Singh and soon to be daughter in law Aishwarya Rai. They took the first row with Yash Chopra. AbhiAsh were in high spirits joking with Sikander Kher and greeting those who came to congratulate them warmly.

Enter Karisma Kapoor with sister Kareena, sans their respective beaus, dressed to kill in stylishly cut Manish Malhotra evening dresses. Looking for seats the Kapoor girls eventually landed up behind AbhiAsh. Tense moments were obvious as Karisma hugged Sikander but not a look passed between ex-fiance Abhishek and her.

With Saif taking ill suddenly, he could not co-host the event with Shah Rukh, so the cheeky Kjo came to the rescue, with copious jokes and puns, all 'unintended'. Malaika Arora Khan was seen with mike getting bites from the stars on the red carpet. Sajid Khan's robust humour surely seems to have rubbed on to SRK, who was side-splittingly funny in his act as MC. However, some of his acts like asking Abhishek 'how did you prepare for Dhoom 2' might not have gone down too well with the latter as Abhishek said mirthlessly, 'Didn't you see Dhoom 2? There was someone else in it.' Ouch. But SRK's Krissh act and his welcome to the 'invisible' Aamir Khan uproarious indeed.

Shilpa Shetty who walked in late was rather the toast of the evening, as she was the subject of many a remark on the stage.

Jaya Bachchan and Javed Akhtar who were both awarded the Lifetime Award made impassioned and touching speeches. While Javed Akhtar saluted the industry, Jaya Bachchan paid a personal homage to all those special people in her career. It was a touching moment when she said that this was the right time for her to accept the award as she would be mother-in-law all over again and warmly welcomed Aishwarya into their family.

Juhi Chawla and Preity Zinta both did fine jobs as co-hosts and watching them get into banter with SRK and Kjo, Ashutosh Gowariker remarked that never had he seen so many hosts together!

(l-r) Ramesh Sippy, Shah Rukh Khan and Javed Akhtar with Yash Chopra, who received the Powerhouse award

However a large part of the fraternity remained absent. Soha Ali was the only one from Saif's family, Salman Khan, John (who's left for the Oscars), Kajol and Ajay Devgan (It being their wedding Anniversary), Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen were all conspicuous by their absence.

The concept of an 'intimate' affair was appreciated as Shabana Azmi told the organisers, "Why didn't you think of this earlier?" She did mention that she couldn't bring her friend with her due to non-transferability of passes.

Hrithik Roshan (Best actor, Dhoom 2)

As an after thought, one must wonder whether an intimate affair where stars mingle with their others from their fraternity, works today, with the existing 'Camp culture'. The Roshans stuck with the Roshans, the Bachchans with the Bachchans, the Kapoors with the Kapoors and the rest stuck with their colleagues from nominated films. And no sooner was the last Award announced than the stars began marching down the red carpet and into their BMWs, leaving back little sparkle in the exquisite dining area marked for them to catch up.

The main sponsor of the award function was Elder Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The associate sponsors were Bisleri International Pvt Ltd and Ashrafi Financial World Company Ltd.

Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra receiving the best director award for RDB

TV partner was Sony Entertainment Television. The ground sponsors for the event were YRF Studios, Bright Advertising Agency (Outdoor partner), Radio Mirchi ( Media partner), Ray Ban (Gift partner), Blue Foods ( Food partner), Johnnie Walker, Raja Rani (Travel partner), Cineyug ( Show direction), Times Now ( English news channel partner), Airtel (Communication partner), IBN 7 (Hindi news channel partner),360 degree (Event management), Rapport Global Events, Harshan Travels, Varsha - artrageous ( Set designer), and Bharatbala Productions Pvt Ltd.

Abhishek Bachchan ( best actor supporting role, KANK) receiving the award as Aishwarya looks on..
