REALITY TV BITES KAZMI AFTER BIGG BOSS EXIT

Criminal lawyer asked to resign from his post as trustee of Imamia Masjid for his 'embarrassing behaviour' on the show

Anand.Holla @timesgroup.com

The reality of Bigg Boss has come home a bit too forcefully for Abbas Kazmi, who represented 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Qasab. The criminal lawyer, who was eliminated from the house after the votes went against him, has now been asked to resign from his position as managing trustee of the Imamia Masjid by community leaders. Kazmi had done a Salman on the sets of the reality show by taking off his shirt and baring a clean-shaven chest, which, unlike Dabangg Khan's, did not have a single pack. He had also danced with skimpily-clad cheer girls on the host's insistence.
Shia scholar and General Secretary of All India Shia Personal Law Board, Maulana Zahir Abbas Rizvi, expressed his outrage at Kazmi's behaviour on the show. "Participating in such an objectionable TV series is forbidden by religion. Kazmi's behaviour has been a shame for the community, especially because he holds the responsible position of a managing trustee." The Imamia Masjid at Dongri is one of the oldest mosques of the Shia sect.
The 55-year-old, who was sacked by Special Judge M L Tahaliyani for non-cooperation during the Qasab trial, seems to have made a habit of being kicked out.
Rizvi said, "He has let down the entire community in the past too by defending Qasab, for which he was condemned all over India. But this is worse than what he did in the past as this does not even figure in his professional commitments. Kazmi should quit immediately on moral grounds as what he did on the show was embarrassing. He should then do whatever he likes in his personal capacity."
Trustee Nazar Abbas was more restrained in his reaction. "Yes, I felt bad about Kazmiji's participation. But let me first discuss this with him and I am sure all of us trustees can sort this out." The trustees and former trustees were not willing to criticise the lawyer's antics on the show openly because he is the managing trustee.
Maulana Saabir Raza said he had sent Kazmi a message asking him to resign from his post, "His behaviour has been totally unacceptable and that's why many of the community's leaders, including me, have asked him to resign. It does not suit a trustee to indulge in naach-gaana and vulgar talks on TV, as the community's image gets tarnished. However, we hope to resolve this through discussions."
Kazmi said that he had not been informed of any such action by any community head, "I was at Imamia Masjid on Sunday. But nobody told me anything."
When he was voted out of the show, he blamed it on dirty politics and said, "Their strategy is to first get rid of someone like me, who is in for the long haul, because they see me as a threat."
Hopefully, with all his experience with rejection, he will eventually learn to accept it graciously.

'People didn't vote for me because I represented Kasab'

Abbas KazmiLawyer Abbas Kazmi found himself voted out of Bigg Boss [ Images ] in the very first week of elimination.

Kazmi, who is best known for defending terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Kasab [ Images ], believed that that may be the reason why the audience did not want to see any more of him on the reality show.

He talks to Rajul Hegde about his time in Bigg Boss.

What made you participate in Bigg Boss?

That was the first show offered to me. Given a chance, I would consider other reality shows too.

I love challenges and the concept of people from different walks of life, different countries and different religions living under one roof as a family. This show gives out a positive message of national integration and communal harmony.

Plus, I wanted to experience the life of a beautiful jail.

You said that the channel approached you for the show. But it was reported that it was you who approached the channel.

That's not true. The channel had been chasing me for six months and I refused them thrice. Finally, I agreed to do the show.

Do you think one week was enough to clear your image?

Like I said, I went on the show because I love challenges. I did not go on the show to clear my image. I have always got a pat on the back -- even when I was defending Kasab. Why do I need anyone's help to clear my image? I am not answerable to anyone and I know how to live my life. I will answer to people only when it is required. If they understand, it's good. Otherwise, I am happy this way.

Why do you think you got evicted?

I was the biggest threat to the housemates because I was a potential winner. All the contestants have a strategy. I was the strongest contestant so they wanted to get rid of me before targeting the simple ones.

People didn't vote for me because they are still angry at me for representing Kasab. They should understand that the court appointed me; I did not approach them.

Abbas KazmiYou were friendly with Rahul Bhatt [ Images ]. Aanchal Kumar even cried when you left.

Yes. Rahul Bhatt is very sweet. I got to know that he lives in my lane. So we're neighbours.

Aanchal is grounded. She's a lovely girl. She is emotional she may cry each time a person leaves the house! I will definitely be in touch with these two, and with the others if they wish.

Are you upset now that you are out of the house?

No. My daughter was going back to Hyderabad. When she heard I was nominated to be evicted, she stayed back. I was back in time for her birthday.

People don't have a very good perception about the lawyers. Comment.

When people ask me why I defended Kasab, I give them an example of the doctors at Nair hospital, who saved Kasab on the night of the 26/11 attack. Why don't they ask this question to those doctors?

What is your take on the death penalty?

I don't want to talk about Kasab. In general, I am against capital punishment. The simple logic is when you can't give life to someone, you don't have right to take it away from someone. If you punish a person and later learn that s/he is an innocent, can you get back their life?

How was your interaction with Bigg boss host Salman Khan [ Images ]?

Salman is fun and a lovely guy. He is approachable and can connect with anyone, irrespective of their age. The channel wouldn't have found a better host.

'The masses are still angry with me for Ajmal Kasab'

Kasab's lawyer, Abbas Kazmi, who's just out of a reality show, says every inmate in the house can stoop to any level to win

Divya Pal

Why do you think you were ousted from Bigg Boss'house right at the start...
I believe the masses didn't support me because they are still angry with my decision to defend Kasab. But I want people to understand the reasons for which I made that choice. The only message I want to convey is - Agar main nahin toh koi doosra vakeel Kasab ko represent karta. It has been mentioned in our Constitution that every criminal should get at least a lawyer to fight his/her case. Aur court ne mujhe appoint kiya tha. I didn't become Kasab's lawyer because I wanted to. Bharat sarkar ne mujhe meri fees di thi. Kanoon ki zaroorat thi jo maine poori kari.
What's next? High-profile criminals like Kasab to participate in reality shows, especially when former dacoit Seema and Devinder Singh aka superchor Bunty have set an example?
I want people to understand that Seemaji was earlier a dacoit. It was her past and now she lives the life of a respectable citizen. We have to understand that Valmiki too was a dacoit at one time before he became a sage. Toh har ek ka past hota hai. We should also look at one's reformed self, which is important for society. As far as Devinder goes, I think he couldn't understand the entire format of the show. Usko barabar brief nahin kiya gaya tha.
Has your stay helped you get an insight into the criminal minds of contestants?
I know who is playing what game. Lekin main negativity main nahin jaana chahta. I could've stayed longer but there was enough backbiting happening, it was evident from Day 1. I have no regrets leaving the house. I belong to a noble profession so I couldn't have stooped to levels that others could. I'm happy that despite dirty politics, which is a part of the game, I was my true self.
Will you be seen in any other reality show?
Chaska toh mujhe college se laga hai. I have always been used to applause and standing ovation which is quite natural when you are a stage actor. College se hi I was interested in acting. Law is my profession but acting has always been my hobby. And whenever, I would get spare time, I'd
pursue it. This is not my first TV show. I played a judge in the television serial Your Honour before as well. So, if I get anything interesting to do, I would accept the challenge. But it is also a fact that I'm a difficult person. People can't deal with me.
What about reports that you have been asked to resign as managing trustee of Imamia Masjid...
Nobody has asked me to resign. These are just some people with vested interests who may have expressed their views to the media. No one has the authority to ask me to resign. Agar koi raah chalta aadmi Manmohan Singh ko resign karne ko kahe toh...
does it make any sense. I was not shocked to read the report because during the controversy regarding Kasab's case too these same people had expressed their displeasure.

Why?? he was not the only Muslim contestant..Veena, Ali, Kazmi and Sara are all muslim. Wonder what the moral police have to say about Sara's behavior on the show. Apart from displaying gluttony (which is not a crime), he did nothing wrong. Wonder what they have to say about watching the show and why those guys watch a 'show like bigg boss". Is watching the show not objectionable?

They'll say things about Sara when she's kicked out, not before that.
