Gautam grew up without a father and was raised by his mother single handedly. His mom is the person he is most attached. These things were mentioned during his conversation with Pritam in Live Feed.
Maybe he sees a father figure in Punz - something that was missing in his life so far...

If you look at it from that angle it's very poignant.
