CHAPTER 11
" So this is the current status and I am sorry to say this, that, unless you somehow manage to arrange the required funds, we, i-e the Council feels that it will be prudent if you step down and give the reins of the company to one of your brothers, Kunwar Jagmaal.
##### 1 HOUR AGO#####
The Council of Twelve sat in the Conference Room with an air of anxiety and clandestine apprehension along with fissures of triumph. Majority were outright thankful that they were finally getting the opportunity for which they had waited for years.
The clock chimed.
It was then that the massive doors slammed open and the Chief Guest of the party arrived.
A tall man with sharp eyes and elegantly shaped beard got up and gave the arrival a piercing look.
"Welcome Kunwar Jagmaal. You are late."
"Now now Rawatji lets not be hasty" another man sitting nearest to the doors spoke up his voice filled with poisonous sweetness, as he looked up to meet the former speaker's hard gaze " Baujiraj Jagmaal is the Crown Prince. I believe he deserves a bit of consideration. Yes?"
"Considerations and excuses Shiladityaji, that is what we have been getting since your dear protge ascended the head position" Rawatji remarked sarcastically turning to look at the bedraggled prince, " who couldn't even make himself presentable either to justify his lateness. Where were you Kunwar Jagmaal? Drinking perhaps? Was it Scotch or Whisky this time?"
A resounding silence followed his words. Few of the councilmen shifted uncomfortably but none rose to defend the prince, some even looking triumphant at the proceedings with the exceptions of Rao Shiladitya who looked incensed.
A pale flush rose across his face at the blatant rebuke. Immediately the familiar sneer flit across his face as he stalked to the head table and flunged himself into the chair turning to face the Council.
"Why am I called here now? I was under the impression that the Council meetings are held only in the 18th of every month. Today is 7th of August."
"We are well aware of that Kunwar Jagmaal" another voice answered his question.
Jagmaal sighed. Another one of Pratap lovers though this one had quite a good reason to hate him.
"Well said Rao Mamrakhji" Rawatji concurred turning his sharp hawk shapped eyes onto him. "So tell me Kunwar Jagmaal, have you gone through the balance sheets and status report you were given in the last meeting?"
Jagmaal flushed. He had been so busy with his latest conquest, wining and dining her that he had completely forgotten to go through it. As he opened his mouth to reply his trusty assistant came to his rescue.
"It was my fault Rawatji. I had completely forgotten to give those papers to Baujiraj. Please don't worry. I have gone through it and will bring Baujiraj upto date" his assistant lied appearing contrite.
Rao Shiladitya looked victorious.
Rawatji grimaced. "Then this will be your last warning Mr Anuj Kashyap. Next time I will be personally showing you the exit doors."
Anuj Kashyap bowed in acceptance.
Rawtji cleared his throat.
"Since Kunwar Jagmaal doen't seem to know the fruit his actions have borne Rao Shiladitya why don't you bring him up to par? After all you were one of the main members who supported his actions."
The majority of the Council who had willingly supported Kunwar Jagmaal and his mentor on their dealings shifted uneasily feeling the virtual sword right up to their necks.
Without a word Rao Shiladitya handed over a file to the Prince.
A few minutes passed in silence as Kunwar Jagmaal went through the printed words his brows furrowed. Every word he read seemed to make his headache increase tenfold. How had everything gone so out of hand? Mausa sa had said that he had everything under control. Then what were these official documents speaking of? A few seconds later he reached the end and took a deep breath his temper rising exponentially.
"What is all this, Rawatji? Why are you bringing these fake reports trying to frame me? he burst out, anger clouding his reason.
Chundawat Rawat was however no doormat. Giving him a wolfish smile he pinned the angry Prince with his hawk eyes.
Jagmaal gulped trying to ignore the distinct feeling of a predator zooming on his prey.
"Why Kunwar Jagmaal, it is all your doing" he retorted. "Remember Kunwar Jagmaal the deal with those Bundi Chauhans. We all told you not to go through it, but you were only too happy to provide capital to your friend that too at a low interest rate without bothering to inspect the products."
The atmosphere tensed at the vitriol that spurt out from the respected Councilman's tones.
Rao Mamrakh was not all surprised at the acidic disposition of his dearest friend after all years ago that very Bundi Chauhan Rao Surtan teaming up with Kunwar Jagmaal had made accusations and brought up evidences against another royal but at that time no one except Rawatji, himself and another one of his friends' had tried to protest. Even his own father had humiliated and cursed him not giving him any chance of proving his innocence.
A bitterness rose in him as that anguished face flashed across his eyes. Tortured understanding of his own blood's betrayal, a plea to help him, those dark eyes burning with a pain that few were able to shoulder and live.
Live. Rao Mamrakh snorted at his own words. He was only going through his life as a duty not living it. After all years locked in a castle with only his few friend for company, shut out from the outside world, was no way to live. Losing his family, wife and child at one go was something few were able to bear.
"...and your dearest friend decided to hoard the generous capital from years onwards proving cheap quality products giving the Suryavanshi Empire a bad name in the market such that half of the shareholders are creating a riot asking back their money."
Jagmaal paled. This wasn't possible. Rao Surtan was his friend his partner in crime than why...
A slow realization gripped him. He recalled how those watery eyes used to glint whenever he would hand over the checks, not with happiness, he realized, but with greed. At once he felt as if someone had punched him as all his air went out.
Rao Surtan could betray him. He lived for money. It was all.
Rawatji felt a perverse pleasure as he saw Kunwar Jagmaal understand the position he had created for himself. Everything has come to a circle. As they said, what goes around comes around.
"Also" Rao Mamrakh interrupted, "let us not forget the deals with some Shehenshah. It looks like all those ships fell down too."
"And the investment of 7.5 crores in the Houston firm. We told you to reject it but you and your mentor were quite sure of it" remarked Rawatji glancind at the subdued Rao Shiladitya Raisen of Malwa.
#####PRESENT#####
" So this is the current status and I am sorry to say this, that, unless you somehow manage to arrange the required funds, we, i-e the Council feels that it will be prudent if you step down and give the reins of the company to one of your brothers, Kunwar Jagmaal."
Jagmaal stiffened. He had betrayed, killed and framed his own blood to gain this company. There was no way he would pass it on to one of his brothers'. After all he was the worthiest to lead the Empire. Pratap was gone, Shakti had depression, Sagar was a backwater and Vikram; Vikram was too busy in his paints to even think of the company. No he would not pass it to one of his brothers. Never.
"How much money are we talking about?" he asked
Rawatji gave him a smirk. "Five hundred crores."
7th July, 1995
Rana Udai Singh Suryavanshi stalked towards the ornate doors and slammed them open.
"Dajiraj, what have you taught my son?" he yelled.
The old man resting on the bed opened his eye and gave him a glance and then went back to sleep.
Udai Singh frowned at the apparent dismissal but ploughed on.
"Do you have any idea what happened? I took Kunwar Pratap to get him a steed, but out of 94 beautiful and trained ones he had to choose that one steed that has a reputation of being bloodthirsty. He literally ignored any advice, marched into the stable, freed the horse, got into a tussle with that brute, broke his arm and finally tamed it, now bringing it to the Royal Stables."
Rana Sangram Singh gave him a piercing look.
"So Pratap tamed a vicious stallion, breaking his arm in the process?" he summarized.
"Yes" Udai Singh bit out none too happy at the calm demeanor of his father.
"Good Boy."
Rana Udai Singh Suryavanshi gaped at his father.
A few seconds later snores filled the silence.
"Lost cause," Rana Udai Singh muttered. "Like Grandfather, like grandson. Both lost causes."
