According to how Maya's character is being unveiled in seasons 2, it does not seem like she was never subject to any torture by anyone, even Ashwin. It never made complete sense the way she kept her mother in the room. Despite being so bossy for everyone else, she was extremely afraid of Ashwin.
Most likely, Ashwin was not her biological father. Her mother may have married him later on and Maya as a child never accepted him. Now to remove him from her mother's life, She may have started behaving in front of others that Ashwin is abusive. Exactly how she does right now with Arjun. She has proved Arjun an abusive husband in front of all repeatedly, so that he can never escape without jail if he tried to leave. She may have caused rift between her mother and Ashwin so that her mother leaves ashwin, just like she did with Arjun and his family. Otherwise it does not make sense for a mother to love someone who used to abuse her own child. May be Janhvi realized with time that Ashwin never did those things, but could not leave Maya, just the way Arjun is not being able to leave Maya. That is why Maya never left Jahnvi alone, Broke her marriage ring, cut herself when she expressed her desire to be with Ashwin. She even used to hurt Jahnvi in process of doing that.
Arjun was Jahnvi's ray of hope. She may have thought that due to Arjun, Maya will get over her obsession for her. but Ashwin had turned grey and seeked revenge. or may be he wanted to save Arjun.
Now as far as Samay is concerned, I dont think he is in love with Maya. He must be seeking revenge from her. It is possible Maya was obsessed with him in past and may have killed someone he really loved and left him to suffer. and now he is seeking revenge. Only time will tell how it will play out. There is a possibility he may turn in favor of Saanjh at some point. Its beyond my understanding that someone can be in love with Psycho like Maya. There is definitely more to it.
