Why does Saanj ask the BASIC QUESTION?

But honestly Saanjh has to be the weakest character on the show, writing wise. It's really hard to empthaize with her and many times you just want to smack her on the head for not seeing the obvious and the rest of the family follows too.. But today, the bench scene was nice with a bit humor but at the same time, I was more annoyed for her to ask the question whether Arjun loves Maya or not.

Honestly, that's not the question she should have asked. She should have asked Arjun that

DOES HE HAVE FEELINGS FOR HER? DOES HE LOVE SAANJH?

Because the real deal is this - If he loves Maya, she's gonna walk away anyhow or she may try to save him and all but the question that everyone should ask Arjun is not about his feelings for Maya but his feelings for Saanjh.

If Arjun isn't in love with Saanjh yet, then Saanjh should walk away. and everyone can see he doesn't and I bet she knows too but she keeps harpering over whether he loves Maya or not.

I don't know the future. I don't know if Arjun will fall for Saanjh, what her role will be in the future, but writers need to do a better job on the character.

Like that movie, Mujhse Dosti Kaarogi, Plan was to emphtahize with Rani's character but it was written so poorely that everyone felt bad for Bebo's character..

Same is here. Everyone feels for Maya but everyone is annoyed by Saanjh because no one can identify with her character.

^^The above was my comment on Shruthiravi's post. Posting it here as well as it answers most of your question. To add to that, Arjun's the weakest written character on the show, imo. The reason why Saanjh did not directly confess or ask if Arjun loves her even though the opportunity was staring right in her face is because she fears making a joke out of herself. Imagine confessing your feelings to your childhood friend who does not harbour the same feelings for you and then discovering that he/she loves someone else. She merely wanted to cover all possible loops before going ahead with the proposal/confession as that not only minimizes the risk of awkwardness later or even reduces all that would be at stake but it would also raise her chances of receiving positive answer.

As far as Saanjh is concerned, her character has potential may be not intriguing and complex like Maya but off late cvs are executing her character as clingy and selfish. My main problem with Saanjh she is not approaching with brain when she has seen the little bit of dangerous side of Maya and have worked with lalwani in Maya's case. Can't she connect the dots and research some background information on Maya which she is gonna do in future as a lawyer She is getting extra emotional and behaving like possessive gf when she is not actually Arjun's gf.

But i think this is a phase. Once Maya-Arjun get together, saanjh will be more focus on herself but sure Arjun will need Saanjh in future whenever his relationship with Maya faces any issue.

So although I understand her, you're right in that I am not sympathizing with her for some reason...i'm just not able to :/
