"Zain?" A voice came from the outside of his cabin.
"Come in." He called out, his attention on the consolidated balance sheet.
"Zain, I need to talk to you." Said a strict voice.
He glanced up to see his mom adorning a strict look. Predicting what was about to come next, he sighed.
"Can't it wait?"
"It has been waiting for 2 years Zain!" Suraiyya snapped, her patience finally cracking up. "It is time Zain. How long will you pine after her? I didn't like her to start with."
He rubbed his temples. His mom had been dropping hints about his marriage. A marriage he didn't want. He was done with relationships.
"It does not matter weather you liked it or not mom. Anyways, It's in the past."
"It doesn't seem like it." His mom retaliated coldly.
"Fine!" He gave up, unable to handle the pressure his family was building up on him for months.
It all seemed so pointless to him. Convinced that he would be able to reject the incoming horde of proposals, he agreed to the premonition that most people call marriage.

The door bell rang as Aaliya wiped her hands on the cloth.
Sighing, she set the flame of the gas on 'low' and went to answer the door.
"Assalam Walikum Aliyaa bitiya."
"Assalam Walikum Chacha. Andar aiye na. Aapke liye chai bana dun?"
"Haan beti." The 50 year old man sat on the sofa with a thump. "Tumhari Nani hai ghar par?"
"Ji. Ek minute. Ammama." She shouted. "Ammama, Rehman Chacha aaye hai."
"Aaj kaise ana hua Chacha?" She asked, waiting for her grandmom to arrive.
"Bas aise hi betiya. Tum batao. Padhai thik chal rai hai?"
"Ji Chacha. Lo,nani aa gai."
She went inside the kitchen again and set the milk to boil.
Drumming her fingers against the platform, she wished she had her cell phone with her when she heatd dulcet tones from the drawing room.
"Ladke acche khandan se hain na?"
"Ji akka. Teen Mumbai se hai, doon Lucknow se. Bitiya ke liye achhe hain."
Her heart skipped a beat. The topic of discussion was not hard to guess. She was 23, going to be 24 this May. People in the 'mohalla' were beginning to talk. She was of age anyway. Funny how when in dire need, none of the well wishers came forward with their helping hand. And now, that nobody wanted them, it was their 'duty' to fulfil their obligations by getting her married.
She sighed as she watched the milk bubble. Well, the moment she had been dreading for so long had arrived.
Might as well get over with it.

This was on hiatus for so long. I am sure half of you have forgotten the plot. Well, good news is there was nothing to begin with 😆
