She watched in silence as the ebbing sun disembarked into the horizon, leaving behind the gentle rays of early evening, bathing the sea and golden sand with a myriad of colours.
The looming silence was mitigated by the waves breaking on the shingle beach. There was a void in the air, mocking at the void in her heart, the void in her life that had been left by him. tears swelled up in her eyes as his face flashed before her ,blurring her vision of the migrating birds against the brightly lit western sky.
Oh! How much she wished she could leave behind everything behind and begin anew. Forget about her past and start a new life, new and clean, as clean as a newborn's skin under the shimmering lights of the nursery. She wished she could wipe out her memory,shake him out of the very ramification of her spine and not see him everywhere ,hope for a future when there seemed to none. A deluge of emotions surged through her veins .
She got up to leave ,when she felt his presence beside her. The small smile that had lightened up her bleary face on seeing him, faded as soon as his words came reeling back to her mind. She was about to walk away, she had made up her mind-"Wait."his voice was weak and not ebullient "J-Just sit with me for a while, will you ..?" his voice was begging, his eyes pleading her not to walk away. She decided against her resolve, as she gave him a slight nod and decided to stay back with him for a while instead..
An unbearable valley of deafning silence had settled between them,as they watched the waning sunlight colour the waters from gold to steel-blue.She looked at him for quite a while before saying something.She studied every single crease on his face,every subtle nuance of his emotions lay bare to her eyes. Her eyes skittered back and forth to his face as she tried to take in every detail.She swallowed hard to find back her voice..."hi.."..."Hi.."his voice was just a mere whisper,he responded back his eyes not leaving her face.."I've b-been looking for you..."..."Oh.." she turned her head sideways in an attempt to choke back the treacherous tears which were daring to fall from her eyes.
A slight breeze pushed the sand towards their feet. She picked up a handful and let them seep away from her grasp. He waited for her to say something, but she had nothing left to say-neither had he, nothing that had not been already said-"I-I'm leaving tomorrow..Z-Zain.."
His heart felt like it was being squeezed as hard as the cold bare hands of the one he once loved to squeeze.He felt like someone was choking his senses-stifling him to death,his ability to articulate the words his heart wanted to say-"Oh.."he let out a heavy sigh.
She looked back at the perpetual flow of water , whose intermittent white noise drowned the soft sound of their mingled breaths. There had to be an answer in the endless horizon,something that would tell her that she should'nt go..
"You'll be fine Zain..you've got to be fine..I have
to do this Z-Zain.." she went to squeeze his hand
that was lying on the sand beside hers like old
times,but she withdrew as soon as she realised the turbulentstate of their relationship, their broken reality."yeah"of ofcourse Aal-ya."he scoffed.Zain Osman Abdullah faced away from her,and let the lone tear slide down his jawline. "I have to do this.." she repeated once again,lokking at him as he sat there tking in the magnitude of the situation.She stared into the blue abyss.Tears rolled down her eyes and mottled her porcelain face,she wiped them away with her flimsy dupatta...
Aaliya drew in a sharp breath as she forced her heart and nerve to form a coherent thought.She had to tell him a few things,remind him of the rest-of the routine that they had been following for the past six months"I-I've arranged ou-your closet,and tied the knots -you really need to learn how to tie the knot of your tie,Zain ...the schedule is still there-though you can r-remove it if you wish ,you won't have a problem""she stopped to glance at him. He seemed lost in a trance,his eyes scanning the horizon.
"Zain..."
"Hmm?"he replied back. His eyes met with hers, her pain and anguish was clearly etched in them , and he was the sole reason behind it-the reason behind her tears and her heartache. he had let her down on numerous occasions,more than he could count on his fingers yet she had been benevolent enough to forgive him. There was silence everywhere except the rhythmic breaking of the waves on the sea shore.The blue water was almost claming,she focused on the rolling tide hoping against all hopes that it would lure her away into a trance so that he would not have to face the next part..
"I-I know that y-you don't love me, that th-this marriage -our marriage has always been that of a compromise for you,but-promise me something,will you Zain ..?"He nodded his head slowly.
"L-Love is a beautiful feeling,Zain. Very few people are lucky enough to get a taste of it." Her lips trembled, her vision blurred as her vision blurred as her tears matched the undulating tide""Don't build barriers in your heart against it,don't shut it out when it comes along your way.And promise me that you-you'll take care of yourself." She stopped and closed her eyes for a while,hoping that the waves would wash away the disdain that she had seen in his eyes at the night of the party.Her heart hoped against all hopes that he'd tell her everything,clear all the air in between them,that he would tell her not to leave,give her a reason to hold on,tell her that he loved her as much as she loved him-give her something that would become her oasis.
Zain knew that he'd have to let go of her, because he had hurt her,broken her heart into a million pieces and taken away her last vestige of hope and trust that was left in their marriage,destroyed her dreams of being together with him.the dubious ubiquitousdarkness that now surrounded him was ecause of his doings. She deserved better,she deserved someone who would love her the way she deserved to be loved-it was the only one thing she had ever asked of him,and he failed to give it to her, he failed their marriage..
I-I need to-to go now Z-Zain.."her voice was breaking ,she once again asked herself why she was doing it,why she wasn't fighting it out with him like old times instead walking away. .her mind reminded her once again that it was because she wanted him to make few decisions, about their marriage, about their relationship..."I'm s-sorry Aal-ya.." she closed her eyes and took into memory how her name sounded coming from his lips.It was probably the last time she was hearing it."Its alright Zain..somethings just aren't meant to be..."saying this she got up from her place .As soon as she turned her back to him,she let her tears fall freely,her footsteps were heavy as she tried waking away from him.The heaving blue waters grieved along with her...it was as if nature had taken part in human sorrow.."Aal-ya.."there was an urgency in his voice"Will I see you around?"She turned her face sideways and gave him a silent nod""Allah Hafiz, Kit-Kit."
"Allah Hafiz,Mamu Ki Bhanji.."his voice died down along with the thrashing sound of the waves.He slumped back on the ground and saw her fade away in the muted darkness of the dusk.
They both knew that they would'nt be able to get the answers that they had been looking for in the endless horizon-because it was a matter of LOVE>Love was and will always be an illusion.Rather than pondering over the newfound truth Zain Osman Abdullah focused on the constant and unfaltering tides,kissing the shore, leaving its mark on the sand and washing the glistening stones, constant and undulating,unlike the mercurial mankind.
