humsafar is about ashar-khirad...two cousins who get married just to please their parent's wish. (Khirad's mum and ashar's dad are bro-sis) they have a simple nikkah as khirad's mum is seriously ill and only has a few days to live. after their marriage, she passes away. Sarah is ashar's cousin (his mum's sister's daughter) who also studied with ashar and has been in love with him since they were kids. She hates khirad and is heart broken when ashar marries khirad.
ashar doesn't think much of khirad and sees her as a very backward girl - khirad who had overheard his thoughts, gives the cold treatment to ashar post marriage. eventually, ashar starts to realise that khirad is in fact a very nice girl, honest, and well educated and both eventually fall in love. soon, ashar's dad dies.
meanwhile, ashar convinces khirad to study further and complete her degree. khirad joins university where she meets Khizer. (sarah's paternal cousin who's in love with sarah) he befriends khirad and ashar starts to get jealous. he leaves for a business trip after a fight with khirad but later apologises over the phone. Khirad is pregnant and wishes to tell ashar upon his return.
on the day of his return, unaware that ashar is returning, khirad with her mother in law goes to khizer's house to help out with the food etc as some guests are coming to see khizer's sister.. sarah's mum is also there and requests khirad to make a sweet dish. While khirad is making the dish, khizer comes there and ashar enters finding khirad/khizer in a compromising position.
ashar's mum tells off khirad and slaps her. khirad begs ashar to believe her but he remains quite. she begs khizer to tell the truth who lies that both khizer and khirad r having an affair. ashar leaves and khirad breaks down. Khizer then reveals that all this was ashar's mum's plan and he had to do all this becos he loves sarah and sarah would only accept him if he like ashar is successful and has studied abroad and ashar's mum had promised to send him abroad and later get him married to sarah.
ashar's mum reveals to khirad that she hates her and was never happy with her alliance with her son and all this was her plan to separate khirad-ashar by creating differences and making ashar believe that khirad is having an affair with khizer. she kicks her out the house, before leaving, khirad writes a letter to ashar disclosing the entire truth but ashar fails to receive it and comes home to be informed by his mum that khirad has left with khizer. ashar begins to hate khirad.
show takes a leap, and khirad returns to meet ashar informing them that they have a daughter, harem who has a heart disease and needs an operation to survive, and he being her biological father must bare all the expenses. khirad is very cold towards ashar and although ashar is too he eventually finds himself being attracted to her once again and requests for them to reunite, but khirad refuses. harem's operation is successful and khirad leaves harem with ashar and returns to her home in another city.
ashar comes across the letter and reads it, he then overhears his mum talking to khizer over the phone and hears how she had planned to separate the two and how she wishes she had got khirad to have an abortion. he breaks down as he remembers the promise he gave to his dying father that he'd always care and protect khirad. he brings khirad back and ashar's mum starts abusing khirad. ashar shuts her up and tells her that he knows the truth...he breaks down questioning his mum as to why did she ruin his life...her plans destroyed his love and kept him away from his daughter.
meanwhile, sarah commits suicide and sarah's mum blames ashar's mum for ruining everyone's lives. the show ends with khirad and ashar reuniting - harem playing in the rain and they show ashar's mum in a state of shock but slowly recovers as harem plays with her.
