Article: Dulhan goes for a makeover

What started as a tale of an illiterate small town girl from Banares who married a 24-year-old man with an IQ of an eight-year-old boy, the story of Vidya and Sagar have gone through many ups and downs. As a devoted wife Vidya, took care of her mentally challenged husband during the past ten months and also took him to Singapore against all odds for an operation to correct his mental illness. The operation is successful and Sagar is cured. But Sagar's mental makeover will now add a major twist to the story of Banoo Main Teri Dulhan.

"Sagar never understood what marriage means. But he did understand what love is and became protective about Vidya. But after his operation, things are going to get absolutely topsy-turvy for Vidya because having got his memory back, he does not recognise her. In fact, he doesn't even remember her," says Divyanka Tripathi, who plays Vidya.

Sagar's cure spells more trouble for the beleaguered and illiterate Vidya who fought against many odds to make her husband a normal person. But now he refuses to acknowledge her as his wife. "Viewers were expecting some change in Sagar's behaviour but this is one big surprise that they did not expect to happen. Having recovered from his illness he is back to his old self — smart, well-read, perfectionist with right attitude and he is the right guy now to manage his family business. And having to deal with an illiterate woman who claims to be his wife is quite a task for him," says Sharad Malhotra who plays Sagar in Dulhan.

For Divyanka, it was the best experience in her career. "it was difficult to act like an illiterate small town girl. Many a time I had to act dumb when co-actors used English words in their dialogues. Since Vidya is a conservative and traditional girl I had to learn shlokas and perform poojas too. I really worked hard on my character," she says.

But what's in store for Sagar and Divyanka? Will he accept her as his wife? Both Sharad and Divyanka feign ignorance. "The best part of the show so far was the chemistry between Sagar and Vidya. It was a rare combination and the way she dealt with him was really amazing. It's to be seen how he deals with her now and what changes their relationship undergoes," says Sharad. Without letting out much, Divyanka adds, "Sagar and Vidya are inseparable. With Sagar's character having undergone a drastic change, Vidya will also have to change. But I don't know what that change is going to be."
