Male stars fade in soaps
In the last few months, soaps have taken a U-turn, as the focus is now on the girl child and women protagonists. Unlike in the past, when characters like Anurag Basu, Mr Rishabh Bajaj (both from Kasautti Zindagi Kay), Mihir Virani (Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi), Armaan Suri (Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin), Abhimanyu (Astitva Ek Prem Kahani), among others ruled the viewer's heart, now there aren't many male characters in the limelight. Instead of male leads, Anandi, Sugna, Maa Sa (Balika Vadhu), Laali (Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo), Santu (Bandini), and other women characters are ruling the small screen.

Female characters have dominated saas-bahu sagas for quite some time now. With the recent trend of serials that cater to women's empowerment, the focus on them has become even more prominent. So do the male actors feel sidelined because of this "sweeping change"?

Most people associated with these serials agree. Rajesh Ram Singh, director of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, says that the main emphasis on women characters started with Ekta Kapoor's saas-bahu sagas and the others followed suit.

"As far as the trend of serials catering to women's upliftment is concerned, it's just a genre development," he says.

Rajesh doesn't deny that in the process, male characters are ignored. "Since viewers are mostly women, channels strategically focus more on them," he says.

Actor Anup Soni, who plays Bhairav Singh in Balika Vadhu says that male actors have to take a backseat in women-centric serials. But he hasn't lost hope. He says that he tries to choose the best that is available to him. "I prefer doing one good serial at a time, rather than taking up every role," he says, adding that he is happy that his present serial is a trendsetter.

However, actor Ronit Roy, whose characters ' Mr Bajaj and Mihir Virani were more famous than his present role, Dharamraj Mahiyavanshi, in Bandini, has never felt left out. "All the characters that I have portrayed have added to my popularity. I think it's better to concentrate on work than the popularity of the character. If work is good, fame will automatically follow you," he sums up with a smile.

DM is equally important as Santu in Bandini. The ratings plunged when he was away from the show.
RR is such a talented actor, his presence completely overtakes the screen. He can never do a bad performance😃

Yes, shalu BAndini is popular just coz of RR...
But its true that DM is not that popular as Mihir/ Bajaj.
Infact no other character on TV can beat the popularity of Mr. Bajaj enjoyed....👏😳

If they can shoe proper cute Sanraj romance then Bandini can be soon seen in top 10 for sure.

I was wondering if an actor's popularity had to do something with the channel his/her show was being telecast. NDTV Imagine is considerably new compared to like Star Plus or ZEE TV right? Although the show is about Santu, she is nothing without DM. There is no question of DM fading in Bandini.

I had not seen RR play Mr Bajaj or Mihir Virani. Bandini is the first RR show for me.I may be redundant in saying this but RR is absolutely brilliant as DM. He is the best. As far as Bandini is concerned I think every cast member is doing a great job.

This has happened in BT soaps previously.Mihir had ups and downs,JW of KS had the same, and the female characters dominate at some point. But that doesnt mean that viewers will stick to the show of the male lead has nothing to do.

As for saying RR is the best,i dont know how far that can be justified.Every individual has a favorite, and that favorite actor becomes the best automatically. For me,it is Ram Kapoor.I do feel that he is the best, but doesnt mean RR is not,for his fans. So,i guess it is quite subjective.

I go with the character more than the actor.Actor is definitely not more than the character,if it was like that,I would be posting away to glory at the Basera forum, where RK is the male lead. But i just dont find his character Keshu as appealing as DM.The story line of Basera is too heavy, and i dont need to cry watching a show. But i used to adore Jai Walia, and do believe JW was every bit popular as Mihir or Bajaj.

I understand what you are saying Radhika. But I don't think it is just the character. I mean I wouldn't like anybody else playing DM. I am also not sure if anybody would justify DM's character like RR. I have become an RR fan after Bandini.

Are you saying that different characters are played well by different actors? If that is the case then may be what you are saying is right. May be I should have said that DM is best played by RR.

different characters are played well by different actors? yes

Suma,Even I cannot imagine anyone other than RR,playing DM.Similarly,I cannot imagine anyone other than Ram playing JW.You see, once you start liking a character, the actor gets a tag of that character. Its difficult to differentiate sometimes.

And yes, trust me,character is bigger. If the story doesnt appeal the audience, they will not sit and watch unless someone is a hard core fan, which I am not :) , of either RK or RR. Lets put it that way.

Dont worry,i am a little cranky today...Have been doing a lot of number crunching today

I think DM not being as popular as Mihir/Bajaj has more to do with the channel and not the character....Imagine does not have the same reach as SP. If Bandini was on one of the more popular channels, DM would be as if not more popular than Bajaj. I was not a follower but did see bits and pieces of KZK and Kyunki and to tell you the truth, did not think much of either....all these shows seemed clones anyways, even the characters or the actors failed to impress me.

I also think that on TV characters are more important than actors....audience identify more with the characters than the actors....a lot of time one does not even know the real name of the actors playing these characters. I did not really have an opinion on RR even though I had seen some of his work and heard that he was considered AB of TV, that is until DM....and the rest is history 😃. I too think RR is the finest actor currently on TV, but then I do not watch too many TV shows, so not sure if I can really make an informed judgement :)
