Movie Review: Alia, Varun win hearts in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania

Movie : Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania

Critics Rating :

Cast : Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Ashutosh Rana, Siddharth Shukla

Director : Shashank Khaitan

New Delhi : Story: The bride-to-be on a wedding shopping finds love of her life and is ready to do anything to share remaining life with him.
  • Review:
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a total filmi drama which comprises of fun, emotion, love and romance.

The film finds its base from the Shah Rukh-Kajol starrer epic love saga Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' and reminds you of Kareena Kapoor in Jab we met'.

Infact, bride-to-be Kavya (Alia Bhatt) dreams of wearing a Kareena style designer lehnga on her wedding and to find it she visits Delhi. In a quest to arrange money for her dream dress, she meets Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan), who is cool and kameena by nature' but have the sweetest heart in town.

In between party-sharty, chit chats and shopping they fall in love with each other and are now ready to face anything which can stop them from being together.

  • Till this point the story runs smooth and seems enjoyable but beyond this point laughter riot punches in as Humty Sharma visits Kavya's house with his two and true friends to please the austere father, who is all set to marry her daughter with a so called superman NRI Angad (Siddharth Shukla).

Though, there is not much to say about the predictable plot it is worth mentioning about the performances of the actors which keeps you glued to the screen.

  • Varun Dhawan is energetic as expected and has delivered one of the cutest acts of his career. Recently, the actor had said that he is not ready for intense roles like Ek Villain. Well he shouldn't try them either as he looks perfect in jolly characters. Alia Bhatt is cute but disappoints as most of the time you will find glimpse of Kareena Kapoor in her acting which kills her own unique identity. Siddharth Shukla, who got a chance to show off things on big screens, is looking super-hot and has played his part to the perfection. Ashutosh Rana has simply added stars to the movie with his flawless expressions.

  • Apart from the lead characters, there are side characters that have played an important role in the movie to keep it interesting. Specially, Humpty's two friends - Shonty and Poplu - have grinded the plot with many humorous dialogues.

In terms of music, film does not have anything special to offer. There are two songs - Saturday Saturday and Samjhawan - which are topping the charts but since they are not the unique ones we won't credit them to the film.

Final verdict: Humpty Sharma and his Dulhania straight away lands in your heart and conquers it.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Review - Close to being the modern-day 'DDLJ' !!3.5/5Verdict - HSKD is presented in a very refreshing manner that makes you laugh, cry and fall in love with Humpty & Kavya. Must Watch for rom-com lovers.

Last week, I wrote about the expectations from a new director to bring in something refreshing and innovative and the debutant director Shashank Khaitan has done just that with a very bracing storytelling in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Its a near to perfect mix for rom-com lovers, especially DDLJ fans but again 'not' perfect. It has its ups and downs.

It starts with Kavya (Alia Bhatt), who is a typical Ambala girl with loads of attitude going to Delhi in pursuit to buy a designer lehnga for her wedding but instead finds the Delhi ka munda - Humpty (Varun Dhawan) and falls in love with him. But Kavya's father Mr. Singh (Ashutosh Rana) is waiting for her in Ambala to get her hitched with a perfect NRI groom in Angad (Siddharth Shukla). Its upto Humpty to stand up against all odds, match upto the spotless Angad and convince Mr. Singh to agree upon Kavya to be his Duhania.

The storyline is too predictable. You can easily anticipate what is going to happen next. But the way it is told and shown, is very enjoyable. It gives a good dose of laughter with some very witty dailogues and also makes you a little teary at some moments yet the smile never goes away. The screenplay is subtle and original, given the genre. The film captures Delhi and Ambala very effectively and the songs are shot brilliantly. I loved the choreography and special efforts that were put in the making of these songs. The song 'emotional fool' very intelligently introduces us to the character traits of Humpty and Kavya without too much time being devoted for the same.

The film is highly inspired by DDLJ and we get to see a lot of similar elements in it. However, the imitation is skillfully done and is entertaining. The modernization of feeding birds by Shahrukh and Amrish Puri in ddlj into smoking cigrattes by Varun and Ashutosh is pretty ingenious.

The backgroung score is fast, engaging and the chartbuster songs keep you engrossed all throughout the movie. 'Emotional Fool' and 'Diangad Diangad' are peppy and foot-tapping and so is the rocking 'Saturday- Saturday'. 'Samjhawan' is just magical and is the highlight of the album.

The chemistry between Humpty and Kavya was incredible and the trio of Humpty, Shonty and Poplu was spot on. Varun Dhawan proves his metal again with his great timing and effortless dailogue delivery but Humpty is no different than the characters he has already played. Playing a bollywoodish hero comes natural to Varun. I would love him to take up an intense or an off beat character. Alia Bhatt is on a high after Highway and 2 states and proves her versatility with a superb potrayal of the typical Ambala girl, though some shades of Shanaya can't be ignored. Ashutosh Rana was just brilliant and everything about him was real and natural. Siddharth Shukla as his character was perfect and did well. Jaswant Daman (Kavya's grandmother) did a very fine job and special mention to Sahil Vaid (Poplu) who was just outstanding with his comic timing.

In all, despite the very predictable love story, HSKD impresses with its very unpredictable and innovative story telling and the electrifying jodi of Varun and Alia. Go ! Watch and comeback with a big smile on your faces.
