Just read few reviews and they are good.Sid was appreciated for his role.
Last week, I wrote about the expectations from a new director to bring in something refreshing and innovative and the debutant director Shashank Khaitan has done just that with a very bracing storytelling in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Its a near to perfect mix for rom-com lovers, especially DDLJ fans but again 'not' perfect. It has its ups and downs.
It starts with Kavya (Alia Bhatt), who is a typical Ambala girl with loads of attitude going to Delhi in pursuit to buy a designer lehnga for her wedding but instead finds the Delhi ka munda - Humpty (Varun Dhawan) and falls in love with him. But Kavya's father Mr. Singh (Ashutosh Rana) is waiting for her in Ambala to get her hitched with a perfect NRI groom in Angad (Siddharth Shukla). Its upto Humpty to stand up against all odds, match upto the spotless Angad and convince Mr. Singh to agree upon Kavya to be his Duhania.
The storyline is too predictable. You can easily anticipate what is going to happen next. But the way it is told and shown, is very enjoyable. It gives a good dose of laughter with some very witty dailogues and also makes you a little teary at some moments yet the smile never goes away. The screenplay is subtle and original, given the genre. The film captures Delhi and Ambala very effectively and the songs are shot brilliantly. I loved the choreography and special efforts that were put in the making of these songs. The song 'emotional fool' very intelligently introduces us to the character traits of Humpty and Kavya without too much time being devoted for the same.
The film is highly inspired by DDLJ and we get to see a lot of similar elements in it. However, the imitation is skillfully done and is entertaining. The modernization of feeding birds by Shahrukh and Amrish Puri in ddlj into smoking cigrattes by Varun and Ashutosh is pretty ingenious.
The backgroung score is fast, engaging and the chartbuster songs keep you engrossed all throughout the movie. 'Emotional Fool' and 'Diangad Diangad' are peppy and foot-tapping and so is the rocking 'Saturday- Saturday'. 'Samjhawan' is just magical and is the highlight of the album.
The chemistry between Humpty and Kavya was incredible and the trio of Humpty, Shonty and Poplu was spot on. Varun Dhawan proves his metal again with his great timing and effortless dailogue delivery but Humpty is no different than the characters he has already played. Playing a bollywoodish hero comes natural to Varun. I would love him to take up an intense or an off beat character. Alia Bhatt is on a high after Highway and 2 states and proves her versatility with a superb potrayal of the typical Ambala girl, though some shades of Shanaya can't be ignored. Ashutosh Rana was just brilliant and everything about him was real and natural. Siddharth Shukla as his character was perfect and did well. Jaswant Daman (Kavya's grandmother) did a very fine job and special mention to Sahil Vaid (Poplu) who was just outstanding with his comic timing.
In all, despite the very predictable love story, HSKD impresses with its very unpredictable and innovative story telling and the electrifying jodi of Varun and Alia. Go ! Watch and comeback with a big smile on your faces.
