Chapter 30
Settling the Singhs off at the apartment, Sid and his parents took their leave, promising to be back after 7 to start with the shopping. As the men went off to catch up on some rest and the ladies sat down together, Sumita took Prats hands in hers. "Bitiya, are you happy with this decision? No one gave you a chance to think..." Remaining silent for some time, Prats sighed, "Maa, I cannot lie. If it were left to me, I would never have married. But Daadisa put me into a spot from where I could not back off. And as we drove here, I started thinking, Maa. What am I doing? Getting married to the man with whom I love spending time, the man whose company I enjoy the most, the man who gives me the freedom to be myself? Not a bad deal, Maa... I just hope he never regrets it..."
Sumita smiled tenderly at her, caressing her downy cheek softly, "You know Prats, when your father and I got married, we didn't know each other at all - typical arranged marriage. But look at us today; we can't do a day without each other, even though we are not so openly demonstrative as today's generation is. The love comes sweetheart, even without the caring that you both already share. Anyway, I am glad that you have come to terms with it. Now, you go have some rest. We want a glowing bride..."
At exactly 7 pm, the Shrivastav's arrived, with sweets and flowers for everybody. En masse, the troop headed put to buy the most important item on the agenda - the ring. Only Bikramji was dropped at the hospital to be with Daadisa. Sitting beside Sid in a dark maroon Mercedes, Prats kept stealing shy glances at the man sitting next to her; this enigma who said he loved her, regardless of everything! Was something wrong with him? As their eyes locked, they lost all sense of time and place, jerking back to reality only when Jagan nudged Prats hard, "Muniya, you'll cause an accident! Next time, I'll sit next to Sid!" Kangan giggled, "Have you forgotten your time, Doctor sahib? You caused a traffic jam when you insisted on proposing to me in the middle on the road!"
Entering the showroom, the elders gathered around Sid and Prats, Jagan took his wife off to buy things for her. Rejecting ring after ring, Prats despaired of finding the perfect one, until in the last box that was shown to them, she reached out for one, only to have it picked up by Sid instead. He proffered the huge blue, round-cut sapphire to her, "This one, Piyu? It is so you..." Smiling shyly, she nodded, "I was just picking this one up..." Sid's mom chortled, "Oh my! So much coordination! Already! I better watch out! Go on Sid, slip it on, let's see how it looks." Tenderly picking up her left hand, he slid the ring onto her engagement finger. At the oohs that erupted at the perfect fit the ring was, he leaned over to whisper in her ear, "Marry me, Piyu? I will be the happiest man on earth." Her eyes tearing up at his reaffirmation, Prats nodded back.
Sureshji told the salesman, "OK, that's done! Can you wrap it up, please?" Sid stood up, "No dad, it's done! My ring is on her finger, and its for keeps. It'll never come off now." At the raised eyebrows, Sid told them, "Small I said, and small it will be. No unnecessary events." Bhoomiji smiled, "I do like you, Sid. You know what you want... OK, Sumita, since we are here, why don't you pick out some other stuff for Pratishtha?" Sureshji interrupted, "We want only the girl, Bhoomiji, not the traditional rigmarole that goes with it... Send her only in one sari." Bhoomiji looked at his wife with pleasure, "OK then, let us just buy some things for our daughter. It may be the last chance we get."
As Prats face dropped, Sid put a hand on her shoulder, "Why last? Don't worry, Prats will trouble you all her life for things." The ladies gathered around, cooing at the variety of baubles available, picking and choosing things for all of them. As Prats turned to Jagan for his opinion a couple of time, Kangan shot a quizzical look at Sid, "Don't feel left out, Sid. Force your way in... I do that all the time; its force of habit now." Taking her words to heart, Sid sat down next to Prats, savoring the full smile she beamed at him.
At around 10 pm, when the shop was on the verge of shutting down, the family trooped out, Sureshji informing them that dinner was ready for them at their home. Jagan interrupted, "Err uncle, if you don't mind, Kangan has never really stopped over at Jaipur. I was thinking I would show her around, if that is alright. And maybe Muniya and Sid could join us?" At the heartfelt, thankful look that Sid threw at him, Jagan winked and led the foursome out to Sid's car.
Sitting around the dimly lit table, after a wonderful, Continental meal, Sid played with Prats fingers under the table, enjoying the sudden friendship that had sprung up between the four of them. He could now understand why Prats and Jagan could not give up their friendship. They were so similar in many ways, with a shared history of so many years. And Prats went out of her way to ensure she included him in every conversation, regaling him with the history of each joke they shared. Sidling ever closer to Prats, he noted that she was shifting toward him too. Leaving her hand, he slid his caressingly along her thigh, enjoying the start of surprise. As she glared at him, he gently tickled her, seeing the glint of laughter in her eyes. He jumped with shock when she pinched his thigh hard.
Jagan laughed out loud, "Go for a walk, you guys! It's been a long day without each other. Kangan and I will entertain ourselves." Not waiting for a second chance, Sid shot up, pulling Prats along with him. Thumping Jagan on his shoulder in gratitude, he dragged Prats along into the huge gardens surrounding the restaurant located in a 5-star property, he almost jogged along until they reached a bench located in the dark recesses at the back of the property. "Uff, Sid! I can't breathe! What was the hurry?" "This, Piyu, this was the hurry. I am starved for you." Pulling her down into his lap, Sid slammed his lips on hers, attacking them as if he would die if he didn't imbibe her into his body. Suddenly avid, Prats threw her arms around his neck, kissing him back fiercely, shaking with the sudden need that attacked her. As the air shuddered out of their lungs, they finally stilled, their bodies twanging in harmony, needing so much more. "Sid, Sid, what do you do to me?" Prats whispered. "Same pinch, darling, I have never felt this urge to meld myself wholly with someone else." Pulling back, he raised her ringed finger to his lips, kissing in and around it, finally popping it into his mouth until her eyes closed in ecstasy. "What can we do, Piyu? Come with me somewhere..." Kissing him gently on the mouth, she whispered tenderly, "Patience darling, patience. I am already breaking my promise... Wait just a week more and we will be together forever."
