Chapter 27

Throwing on their clothes in a hurry, Sid and Prats drove over to Badi Haveli in a rush. Maa had sounded frantic; something was seriously wrong. Entered the haveli at a trot, Prats ran up the stairs, leaving Sid in the hall. Looking back at him, Prats called, "Please come with me, Sid." Hearing her voice, Geeta called out, "Prats, come to Maasa's room, we are all here..." Rushing in, Prats skidded to a halt, letting Sid career into her. An unconscious dadisa lay on her bed, surrounded by the entire family. The local doctor had arrived and was administering first aid.

Kneeling next to Daadisa, Prats gently lifted a frail hand to her cheek. Kissing the papery, almost brittle, blue-veined skin, she whispered, "What happened?" Her mother caressed her head with a gentle hand, "Don't know, Piyu; your father heard a thud a while ago and found Maasa lying unconsciousness on the floor of the passage. The first call was to the doctor; the second to you..."

As the doctor injected Daadisa with something, Prats massaged her feet gently, watching as, finally, Daadisa's eyes fluttered open slightly. "Chori, tu aa gayi? <Girl, you have come?> Aur mera Jagan? <And my Jagan?>" Sitting next to her pillow, Bikramji said, "Yes, I called him too. He will arrive as soon as he can." Trying to prop herself up, Daadisa peered around at everyone, "Siddhant, you are here too... Accha hai <that's good>." Gently bidding her to lie down, the doctor said, "She's had a massive heart attack; we need to get her to the hospital ASAP."

As Prats rode the ambulance along with Daadisa and the medical team that had arrived, Bhoomiji and Sid chased it down the sleepy roads, screeching to a halt in front of the hospital. As Daadisa was rushed to the ICCU, she held on to Prats hand, forcing her to run along. As the doors were being opened, Daadisa pulled Prats close with surprising strength, "Chori, God knows if I will survive this; but I want you to promise me something. I don't want to see you alone all your life. Marry Siddhant... I know he has offered." Prats withdrew in shock, "Nooo... I vowed never to marry, Daadisa!" Daadisa whispered back, "Break your vow for me, chori... please."

As Prats sagged back against Bhoomiji, whose strong hands propped her up, Daadisa was wheeled into the ICCU. Looking around nervously at all the people gathered around them, Prat's eyes were drawn to the sternly quiet man standing aloof at the back of the crowd. Their eyes locked for an interminable moment before he turned silently and walked away.

Sitting in the waiting area was never more difficult. The prognosis was not good. Daadisa needed open-heart surgery, but since that was not available here, they were inserting stents till they could get her to the best doctors available. As Prats sat on tenterhooks, her mind wandering between Daadisa and Sid's stern visage, her mother came to sit beside her. "What are you thinking, Pratishtha? Say something..." "Maa, what Daadisa is asking for is not correct. I am not made for marriage. Marrying against my will will make not only me, but will also make Sid unhappy. I know him, he will agree if I tell him so, but is it fair on my part? He can get someone so much better than me; someone who will love him back " equally, if not more so. How can I expect that he be so forbearing? And what about his family? A marriage by order? Who will accept that?"

Holding Prats twisted hands gently in hers, "Well, I only know what Daadisa has asked you to do. And I know that you and Siddhant are made for each other. I only have to see your face and hear your voice when you are talking to him or about him. I really don't know what you feel, but Siddhanth has told your father that he wants to marry you. Whether he is strong enough to do so in these circumstances is what we need to see. Go speak to him Prats; maybe you will surprise each other. Go now, baby; Daadisa won't need you for some time now."

Walking slowly out of the hospital, Prats looked around for Sid. Unerringly drawn by her instincts to the back of the hospital, she found him sitting under a huge banyan tree, deep in thought. Approaching him soundlessly, she was surprised when he mumbled, "Come, sit down, Prats." Perching carefully on the rock next to him, she cleared her throat, "Sid, I'm sorry that my family put you in this precarious situation. But, I just can't bear to see Daadisa this way." Turning sideways to her, Sid gently put his arm around her shoulders, drawing her head onto his shoulders. As she burst into tears, he gently smoothed her hair with sure, tender strokes. On her quietening, he whispered, "Piyu, you needn't be coerced into doing something you don't want. I am totally against this. I love you and definitely want to marry you, but not like this. Daadisa will be fine after her operation. You can talk to her then..."

Prats smiled sadly, "I know she will be fine, but this is the first time ever that she has asked me something. I can't say no to her, I can't... Can you help me in this, Sid? Can you stand with me as my best friend? Of course, you can say no if you really don't want to. But, if you possibly can, will you please marry me, Sid? Please..." Laughing out loud for the first time in a while, Sid said. "Listen to yourself, Piyu. Are you asking me or not? Yeh bhi koi proposal hota hai <is this any kind of proposal>?" Smiling up at him, she pulled away from his arms. Picking up his hand, she kissed it, "Marry me, Sid. I promise I'll be the best wife you could ever have."

Leaning forward to kiss her forehead, he whispered, "It would be my pleasure, darling. And I promise you, you will love me, and soon." Looking deep into each other's eyes, some promises made, some wishes declared, they lost all sense of time until a loud cry disturbed them. "Pratsi! We've arrived!! Come quick." Glancing up, Prats yelled, "Jagan!" and pulling free of Sid's hold, ran to toss herself into the waiting arms of a tall, boyishly good-looking man. As Sid followed slowly behind, he noted a pretty lady in a pale pink salwar kameez, holding the hand of a chubby three-year-old boy, gazing at the embracing twosome with fondness.
