As the school bell signals the end of the day's lessons, Tulsi, reluctantly heads out of her class. While her peers are occupied with thoughts of games, Tulsi can't but help but think whether this is her last day at the Satya Bharti School in the Judia village near Jodhpur.
Looking at her, very few can imagine the journey that Tulsi has embarked to be where she stands today. At the village government school where she started her education, Tulsi faced discrimination and humiliation at the hand of her teachers and eventually dropped out from school.
If it weren't for her father, who enrolled her at the Satya Bharti School, Tulsi would have had suffered the same fate like many young girls across pockets of rural Rajasthan. At her new school, Tulsi's desire to learn was reignited and she soon emerged as a bright student excelling in academics as well as sports such as kho kho.
But while she was busy solving problems in subjects like math, science etc., Tulsi was completely oblivious of her husband, who lived in the neighbouring Shekhara village. She had been married at the age of three [of which she had no memory] and was now being pressured by her in-laws to live with them.
Though unwilling to give up her education, Tulsi had to move to Shekhara, where she diligently fulfilled her household duties and never gave anyone an opportunity to complain. Meanwhile, she kept trying to convince her in-laws to let her continue her schooling.
Many arguments later, her in-laws finally relented and allowed her to attend school for about 12 days a month. Today she works extra hard to ensure that she is at par with her classmates.
Even though she knows deep down in her heart that one day it will be her last day in school but till then Tulsi continues to challenge mindsets and is setting precedence for millions like her.
