@TM You've raised valid points in your main post and also clarified your stance regarding the use of derogatory language in criticism. This plus the fact that you've written your points in a fairly reasonable manner considering the content is the only reason I am contributing to this discussion thread.
First of all, yes, freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed by many constitutions around the world. I for one am a very strong believer in being having the freedom to communicate my thoughts and feelings without being policed by others. That freedom however does not extend to using abusive, derogatory and discriminatory language to do so regardless of who or what is being discussed.
Freedom of speech exists within a particular framework both in society and online to ensure there is no abuse of said freedom which will result in conflict or damage to individuals or institutions. With regards to the online world, people can create and post whatever they want but by becoming a member of IF a person has to agree to the forum's terms of conditions which include a requirement to follow the rules as laid out by the overall forum and the smaller forums/channels. The rules are quite clear about content is deemed appropriate and inappropriate.
Criticism is a good and necessary thing. It is however a subjective thing and the moderators are being required to make calls on content which is questionable. I have seen constructive threads being opened where members have criticized in language which does not break any rules. The problem is that these threads are then hijacked by other members who introduce inappropriate content thus leading to the thread being closed. Many times moderators have stuck notes on threads but members have still continued posting inappropriately. Other times the threads have progressed so far and so many rules have been broken that the moderators have had no choice but to close it. That's what a moderator is supposed to do...attempt to moderate the discussion going on and ensure rules are being followed...otherwise the thread is closed.
Members are able to provide constructive criticism on whatever matter they want. It is not the moderators who have a problem with it. It is other members who are not satisfied with the type of criticism being given and take it upon themselves to share their dissatisfaction in an inappropriate manner. That's when the moderators get involved.
Please note I am not defending the moderator's decision-making process because I'm not a moderator and thus don't exactly how they determine what to do and when. I am simply attempting to provide another point of view as to why things are the way they are.
Now while I have no problem with you posting your issues with the moderators in the forum, based on previous such posts the moderators will simply ask you to PM your concerns to them.
