Anandi and Shiv got to Udaipur around 6p.m. and decided to go home and freshen up before meeting Mahi at the Taj. Ira, Alok and Choti Ma were extremely pleased to see them and despite Anandi insisting that she make everyone tea, Ira reminded her that she had an hour to get changed and go out and that Nathu was there to make tea for everyone. Anandi asked about dadu and was told, he was resting in his room as he wasn't feeling well. Meenu spoke about how he didn't seem to remember that her late husband had passed away and had kept asking for him that day. Asking her to call him, as he was away fighting for the country. He thought Mahi was little and Shiv was away at school forgetting that the kids were now grown up. This saddened Anandi and as she glanced at Shiv, she noticed a mix of sadness, fear, emotion in his eyes. She subtly put her hand on his and looked at him.

******************************************************************************************************

Ira and Meenu sent Anandi up to get ready as they were getting late. Anandi had brought a sari with her, a pretty one Sumi had bought her, one she hadn't worn before and one she thought her husband would appreciate when he saw her in it. She still remembered how he had looked at her when she had worn the yellow sari on his birthday. The appreciating glance she had brushed away then as astonishment because he was not used to seeing her in saris. Now, she knew better, it had been appreciation and admiration, perhaps even realization of the fact that he thought she was beautiful. She blushed as she got the mango yellow georgette Sari with shocking pink and shine border out of it box. Her husband was in for a surprise.

When Shiv knocked on their bedroom door, Anandi asked for 2 minutes saying she was almost ready but finding it difficult to tie her blouse's dori. 'Main madaat kardu', Shiv heard himself say and there was no answer as Shiv wondered if he had committed a faux pas. Then, the door opened and the sight of his wife took his breathe away. She was wearing a gorgeous sari, her hair was straightened and she wore it down, and she had applied light makeup. He smiled at her as she said, 'aandar aajaaye Shiv' and as he went in, she closed the door and walked to the mirror. He continued to stare at her and she looked into the mirror, looked at him and moved her hair to the side indicating that he come and tie her dori. Shiv walked to her mesmerised, noticing her milky skin and wanting to run his hand softly over her back. Controlling himself, he tied her dori as Anandi shivered at his touch. She looked back at him through the mirror as he looked at her, 'Shiv, If you keep looking at me like this, we will never get there in time. Please go and get ready' and Shiv went to change into the debonair suit his wife had laid out for him.

******************************************************************************************************

Shiv and Anandi walked into the Taj Hotel's lobby, and heads turned to look at Anandi. She looked so glamorous and Shiv smiled at the attention she was receiving and how oblivious she was to it. His wife could give any movie star a run for their money, and he loved that she was so unaware of her beauty and wore it unconsciously. He was so proud of her and as she slipped her hand in his, he squeezed it tightly. He walked to the reception desk and asked for Mahi Shekhar as the concierge acknowledged them and led him and Anandi towards the dining room where Mahi and Shreya were waiting.

Mahi noticed his bhaiyya and bhabhi walk in, got up and went up to them as Shreya got up and nervously stood at the table. She had worn a sari too, perhaps by the same designer as Anandi and it was pink georgette sari with royal blue and a dull gold border. She smiled at Anandi and Shiv as they walked towards her, and Mahi introduced her to them. Anandi came forward and hugged her as Shiv shook her hand. Shiv glanced at Anandi, as they sat down for dinner thankful that Mahi had listened and not brought all his teammates down for a party.

*******************************************************************************************************

Anandi and Shiv put Shreya at ease and the foursome chatted like old friends through dinner. Shiv hoped Mahi would come home with them and stay with the family and not stay back with Shreya. It wouldn't do and the elders would disapprove. He hoped Mahi understood that such stuff may be acceptable in Mumbai but not in Udaipur. After dinenr and before dessert was brought in, Anandi got up to go to the ladies room and Shiv, busy chatting with Mahi did not notice someone follow her. Perhaps none of them had noticed that they were being observed that night by a familiar face. Someone who had stayed in the background, wanted to go unnoticed, not wanting Shiv to see him but eyeing Anandi all through. He had almost lost his balance as he saw how beautiful Anandi looked. He had been waiting for the opportunity to catch Anandi alone. So he followed her, waiting outside the ladies room and as she walked out, he had caught her arm. 'Having fun with your new family, while I pine for mine? Having fun with your new love while I crave for love? I will ruin your love and his family Anandi! What do you see in him Anandi? Leave him if you want him to be happy and at peace!' Jagya had whispered into her ear as he twisted her arm and she grimaced with pain not wanting to scream and create a scene. The shock of seeing Jagya in Udaipur was like a blow to the gut, emptying her lungs of all air, creating a rushing sense of terror where moments ago there had been serenity. Anger enveloped Anandi who was determined not to show her fear to a man who thrived on hurting others, on giving pain. Anandi was a fighter, so instead of screaming for her husband who would come rushing for her, she stood there listening.

Jagya spoke again 'Do you know what I am thinking right now Anandi? I am thinking that I could pick you up, right now and take you with me. You should never have married him, you know. I can tell you have fallen in love with him. I can tell, by your eyes, by the expression in them, by the way you look at him. So adoringly! Love, Anandi? For Shivraj Shekhar? You should never have loved him. I didn't think you would, you know. I knew he would love you, go crazy from wanting you, how could he not? You are so ravishing...you look so stunning...so gorgeous...there is no way he would not have loved you. But I never thought that you would reciprocate the feelings. Maybe I could take you up to the terrace you know, throw you off the roof, and watch you scream, as you die. You are so light, so small, so easily finished off. It would kill him to lose you; he would be ruined and I would have my revenge. But it would kill me too. So I must keep you alive. '

And as he had said this, he had let go of her hand, his voice had changed and Anandi had turned to look at him realising perhaps for the first time that he meant what he said. That he would do anything to hurt Shiv. His desire for revenge had overtaken all the sense in him and he was like a madman. Anandi looked him in the eye and spoke the anger in her voice obvious and perhaps coating the fear within her 'Don't you dare talk about my husband; don't you dare go near him. Why are you here, Jagya? I have nothing to say to you. Why can you not leave me alone to live my life? Why can't you move on? Why can't you understand that I love my husband with all my heart and soul? He is everything to me and you can never ever be anything like him' And she had turned away and walked off leaving Jagya astounded at the confession, unable to do anything as she walked away.

*******************************************************************************************************

As this conversation was going on outside the ladies room, Shiv had excused himself from the table and wandered to the bar to get a drink and look for Anandi. She had said she would be back soon but she was nowhere around. He had ordered a drink; took the glass with him and went outside the dining room to find Anandi. As he had come close to the washrooms, Shiv had heard Jagya's voice and heard what he had been saying about throwing Anandi off the terrace. Something had snapped inside the usually calm and collected Shiv and he had wanted to go and murder Jagya right then. However, he had been careful knowing that any wrong move may mean that Jagya would do as he had threatened. So Shiv had stood there listening to every word and breaking the glass in his hand in fury, wincing as the broken pieces of glass pierced his palm and his hand started to bleed. He heard her say the words then; say what she had not said to him; say what he had wanted to hear; she had said that she loved him. A single tear, one he hadn't been able to control, emerging from the depths of his heart, escaped his eye as he stood rooted to the spot wondering whether to go after his wife or go up to Jagya and beat him to pulp.

********************************************************************************************************

Ira and Meenu had brought up Shiv to be a good decent man. They had taught him to love and respect the women in his life. They had taught him to cherish them, protect them and never bring sorrow, fear or pain to them. Ever. He had gentle regard for his ma, his choti ma and his sister, something that spoke of true goodness. If he would ever come home bloodied and dirty from fighting at his exclusive private school it had been because someone had said something insensitive about a lady. He would roll his eyes as a little Saanchi chased him around the courtyard, but submit laughingly to his little sister when he noticed her pout or her tears. He would buy her whatever she asked for; clothes, shoes, glittery headbands, hairpins, make-up, and fashion magazines with no shame about being seen buying such girly things. He would tolerate his late grandmother's upper-class ways with a twinkle and a shrug. These two women had done their job well and despite the stern exterior to those he didn't know, Shiv was the kindest, warmest man they could have raised.

That Shiv now stood outside by his car, emotions racing through his mind as he accepted each tormenting detail about how he had failed their teachings and brought shame upon them; how he had failed to prevent a cunning, evil, crazy man from stalking, attacking and perhaps almost murdering the only woman for whom his heart had ever beaten.

He had failed.

*****************************************************************************************************

Dadu had wanted to go to town after dinner; he had insisted and choti ma had said she would go along. She had asked him to wait while she cleared the table. Ira and Alok had gone to family friends' for dinner, Shiv, Anandi and Mahi would be home late, and the servants were busy making preparations for Shiv, Anandi and Mahi's weekend at home. Dadu had been impatient so he had wandered off alone. He had walked down the street and onto the main road, in thought thinking of the plants in the garden, thought of his little grandchildren, unaware due to disease perhaps that they were all older and forgetting that his Shiv was even married now; happy thoughts that had made him smile. He had kept on walking, not thinking of the destination, then forgetting what he had been thinking about, walking on as if lost, aimlessly, and suddenly arriving in town. It was so dark, there were cars all around and he was trying to cross the street. He tried to avoid the cars but there were so many, and they were driving too fast he had thought. He had hoped they would wait while he crossed so he had walked fast, holding his hand up thanking the motorists that did stop. And then, a car had come from nowhere, when he had almost reached the pavement and that car had hit him so hard, he had fallen onto the bonnet, fallen off onto the road and rolled to the sidewalk. The driver had then sped away. And then, as he had closed his eyes due to the pain he was feeling dadu wished he had waited for Meenu. She would have driven him. If only...but alas...fate. So he had closed his eyes and sunk into the darkness that was beckoning him.

************************************************************************************************

Jagya had left the hotel in anger from the back entrance. He had driven his car into town in a fury and he was driving around and around in anger when he had suddenly spotted Shiv's grandfather, walking on the streets as if lost. If Jagya had been a different man, if he would have been aware of anything other than the desire to seek revenge from Anandi and Shiv, he would perhaps have stopped and thought about what he was doing, and whether it was right. He would have thought about the gift he had, that to save lives and not destroy them. But Jagya was so consumed by his hatred that it was all he was aware of, so when he saw dadu, lost, stuck in traffic, waiting to cross, all he could think about was what he had said to Anandi earlier, about the pain that Shiv and Anandi would go through at losing someone dear to them. It would be perfect revenge. It would make Anandi aware of what he was capable of. Shiv had been the reason behind his pain and now he would feel the same agony. And Jagya had then stepped on the accelerator and without thinking he had sped forward, hit the old man and driven away, leaving the casualty bleeding and on the side of the road.
