Warm blood rushed to her cheeks as she cautiously stood near him, waiting outside a wooden dwelling, all soaked. Anandi and Shiv returned from Jaipur, where they had been to attend an urgent meeting, when Shiv's jeep broke down on the way back due to heavy rains. There was no place they could take shelter in when Shiv suddenly noticed this small hut just a few meters away from the spot their jeep had broken down. Though he had sensed her reluctance to stop at the place till the rains stopped, he knew they had no second option.
Shiv ran his hands through his wet hair as they waited for someone to respond from the opposite side. Anandi shrugged feeling the awkwardness of the moment. Even through the rains, he could hear her breathing hard. She avoided looking at him except for the concerned glances she stole whenever he sneezed. Anandi eyed Shiv as he sneezed for the 15th time in the past 10 minutes. As their eyes locked for a brief instant, Shiv sighed under his breath. His heart did a flip as his eyes fell on her moistened lips. He felt stirred and poised; but instantly gave away the thought, embarrassed.
After a few minutes of a patient wait Anandi and Shiv saw someone opening the door. An old man who had a hunchback stood in front of them. And behind him stood a lady, probably his wife, who seemed less old but more strict than him. She gave her unwanted guests a cold "What do you want" look.
"Ji namastey, main Shiv hoon, Jaitser ka collector aur ye Anandi hain, Jetsar ki sarpanch. Woh actually hamari jeep wahan road ke beech mein kharab ho gayi.Aur yahan koi mechanic bhi nahin hai.To humne socha ki agar thodi der rukne ke liye koi jagah mil jaye to" Shiv tried to explain.
The old lady gave Shiv a stern look that made him bite his lower lip. She looked at him from head to toe and then at Anandi, when finally a li'l smile hit the corner of her lips. She allowed them in a gruff voice, which made Shiv feel as if he had been summoned to the principal's office in school.
"Thnx aunty" Shiv obliged hesitatingly as the two of them walked in. The house wasn't too big but sufficient enough for two people to share a comfortable life. It had a wooden floor and a sloping roof. Shiv liked it instantly, specially the dim lighting, the antique furniture and the ornate showpieces that gave it a perfect rustic look. In every way, it just looked like the house he had imagined himself sharing with Anandi when they would be in a similar age. The thought made him smile to himself.
"tum dono husband-wife ho" the old lady suddenly snapped Shiv out of his dreamland. Anandi and Shiv gawked at each other's faces feeling the uneasiness of the question.
"Ji nahin, woh hum'"Shiv cleared his throat feeling embarrassed. "mera matlab hai ki humari sagai hui hai" Shiv informed looking away.
The old man laughed as he saw his wife pulling the new couple's leg."Wifey pls its enough for the evening, let the kids be. Why don't you take this young girl for a change of clothes till I give collector sahab something from Rakesh's cupboard" the old uncle surprised Shiv with his jovial temperament. "I forgot to tell Rakesh is my only son'he lives in the city and visits us once in a while" the old uncle enlightened Shiv about the guy whose clothes he was about to wear.
A few minutes had passed and Shiv, who now donned a beige colored kurta and chudidar, relaxed himself with uncle who had convinced him for a drink before the dinner was ready. Being apprehensive whether Anandi would like it or not, Shiv tried to avoid uncle's suggestion to start right away and offered to help him with the fireplace. He poked the fire, moving the logs, and added some more kindling when suddenly he caught a glimpse of Anandi from the corner of his eye. She wore a beautiful red chiffon saree, her wet hair resting loosely on her shoulders. Fire turned to flames, both in the fireplace and within Shiv. He looked up to her and stopped breathing for a second. He had never seen someone so incredibly beautiful.
Anandi fluttered at her place feeling his eyes on her. Her heart pumped hard against her chest as she watched the flames flicker in his hazel eyes. For a few passing seconds, they lost themselves into a passionate eyelock when suddenly a cloud burst brought them back to their senses.
