Gifts : how big is too big? is it a good surprise to buy a big gift that is a major purchase and claim its a surprise? i guess its not bad to make a big purchase but when is it too big to be a surprise?
job interviews: if you have been sitting at home searching for jobs, would you keep an interview a surpirse? especially in your spouse's company? i actually would want to pick my husband's brain about what to do/say etc coz he knows the company!
I am sure these two have a few other bad surprises for each other but i can't think of anymore...

I think that the amount of money or the bigness/smallness of the gift is not what determines the surprise or the shock -- particularly in the case of jagat and gauri.
I think it is the intention. If the intention is to create an unexpected pleasurable emotional setpoint or sensation for the other party, then it can be said to be a surprise.
In the case of this useless doctor couple, they generally hide things because they know fully well that the other person will not like it at all -- and so they try to disguise their deed/gift as a 'surprise'.
Naturally, with the knowledge that the other person will not like it, it will obviously come as a shock to the other person when the so called 'surprise' is sprung upon them . 😲
As for the interview, I am sure jagat would have told gauri in happiness if they had gone shopping for clothes like he requested. However, since she refused and said she had no money and then added on "tumhe naye kapde ki kya zaroorat hai, tum to vaise bhi ghar par baithe ho" (uncalled for in my opinion - this last sentence) it got his back up. He deliberately hid it from her not to surprise her, but because his mind soured towards her when she said this.
