"Eh Bandariya...sssshht idhar" Jagdish whispered peeping into the kitchen from the window. Anandi looked up from the vegetables she was chopping to find a rather amused Jagdish staring back at her, "Kya hain?" she asked somewhat irritably. He had teased her terribly earlier; he had been free to play and make merry while she was set the task of making tonight's dinner, Dadisa had been insistent and even her sasuma had been unable to intervene.
"Chal...Gilli Danda khelne chalegi?" Jagdish asked, climbing in through the window once he had ascertained that Anandi was alone; his friends were not allowed to play until they had completed their homework and Jagdish knew them too well, it wouldn't be for a while, meanwhile, he was bored and restless. Anandi pretended to ignore him but he had peaked her interest, "Gilli danda?" she said softly to herself, wondering what that was but Jagdish had heard her. "Khelegi na? Main sikaunga..."Jagdish coaxed, "Tunhe hi tou kaha tha na...tu mahri beendhani hain, marhe liye sab kuch karegi...mahre saath khelne chal tou" Anandi listened carefully, she had infact said those words but then she looked around at the articles lain across the kitchen counter helplessly, something which Jagdish was quick to notice, "Main tujhe nahi keetabh la ke doonga...mere teacher ne di hain..." Anandi's ears prickled at the mention of getting a new book, "Sach?!" she exclaimed, excited by the prospect, forgetting all quarrel with her husband. Jagdish grinned back and grabbing her hand he tried to pull her out of the kitchen but Anandi stopped in her tracks."Nahin..." she said sadly, extricating her hand from Jagdish's grip softly, "Dadisa daantegi..."
Jagdish looked on exasperated, "Dekh, phirse tarhe saath nahin khelunga...soch le...kheetabh bhi nahin doonga..." he threatened, "Nahin..." Anandi was resolute, she had incurred enough of Dadisa's wrath to be wiser but her heart still yearned to be able to go and play. "Accha theek hain..." Jagdish stamped, making his way out of the kitchen, slightly disheartened. Anandi watched Jagdish's retreating back and quickly called, "Eh...ruko...tu baad mein mahri badat karega?" Jagdish swiveled to face her and smiled warmly at her, "Chal baba, warna koi aa jayega!" He told her.
Anandi insisted that they stay within the bounds of the Haweli so that it would be faster for her to get back if necessary. Jagdish guided her quietly towards the terrace, watching in fascination at Anandi's delighted face. There were many of Jagdish's things lain about, cricket bats, a ball, a tennis racket and many more things, all these were new to Anandi and she picked up a racket, "Isse khelte hain Gilli danda?" she asked in her naivety and a howl of laughter came from Jagdish as a reply, "Nahin bhudhu! Dande se khelte hain..." and from there Jagdish proceeded to teach her how to play and Anandi picked it up very quickly, enjoying every moment. Both played for what seemed like hours, lost in their own little world, forgetful that there was a tonne of work left for Anandi when she got back, it was a good thing she got started early.
Suddenly there was a loud crack and russle of clothes, it seemed as though somebody was on their way up to the terrace too, usually nobody came but today seemed ill fated for both Jagdish and Anandi. Both stood froen in terror until Jagdish gathered his wits and pulled Anandi behind the water tank, bringing her as close as possible to hide her. She cowered within his embrace and her mind re-called what punishment she had suffered before and she whimpered in terror until Jagdish quickly put his hand to her mouth and warned her not to make a sound. Anandi shook her head, "Dadisa..." she mouthed, the fear shining clearly in her eyes. Jagdish did not know what it was in her eyes that made him act that way, but he tightened his hold around her and whispered into her hair, "Dharo mat...mein hoon..." Anandi stiftened though, neither had been so close before, it was something strange. Anandi could not say she didn't like it, in fact Jagdish made her feel protected and she was able to compose herself. They sat like that behind the water tank, waiting for an indication that they were again alone.
Whoever it was, didn't waste much time on the terrace and soon, Jagdish carefully assessed that they were safe to come back out. He helped Anandi off the ground and he felt an incredible urge to hold her again, she still looked quite frightened and he resolved never to force her to play with him again. Slowly bringing a hand up to her face, he wiped the tears that spilled from her eyes and smiled down at her, Anandi gained some courage from his actions and smiled too, "Marhe ko kheetabh kab dega tu?" she asked quietly, causing both to laugh slightly, "Bhandariya, main tou mazak kar raha tha!" Jagdish informed her and ran down the stairs with Anandi hot on his heels.

Dadisa: arey beendhani, Kitney baar samjhao tujhe, jo tera been chahta hai, woh thaney karna padega. Samjhi
Anandi makes a sad face.
Jagdish: Chal main bowling tu batting kar
Anandi: Theek hai and takes the bat from his hand.
Anandi play the first shot and hits the ball very high and hits Maasa back with such force that maasa falls on the ground: Maasa screams.
Dadisa: Arey maar daala.. Arey Jagdish ki bahu'Saathyanaash tera'.Kya kiya thaney'Meri kamar thod dali isne..
Jagdish: Dadisa.. oh dadisa.. ut jao.. aap sapna dekh rahi hai.
Dadisa wakes from her sleep
Dadisa : Sapna'. Hey bhagwaan.
Jagdish: Kya hua Dadisa.
Dadisa: Arey Sapney main Anandi ne mujhe ball se mara
Jagdish: Kya dadisa. Apko pata hai, Woh Bandariya apney maayke gayi hai. Kyun Dadisa.. bahut yaad aah rahi hain beendariya ki ' Agar ithni yaad aah rahi hai toh... main us bandariya ko wapas bulao.
Dadisa: Nahi nahi'rahney do ussey apney maayke main. Thoda din toh chain milega'.Tu kya kar raha yaha pey'. chal ja yaha se' apna padai kar aur sun thaarey teacher ne kabhi thaarey ko pareshan kiya toh maaney bol.. Jaa...
Jagdish leaves the room.
Dadisa: yeh anandi maarey peecha hi nahi chodti, sapney main bhi aawath hain.. Hey lakshmi maa, bachao muhje and goes to sleep again

[AN: Before I start, I'd like to warn readers before hand that I have tendency to get carried away, which is why this mini fic is longer than I'd actually planned it. Hindi dialogues have been used for authenticity so apologies to anyone who struggles with Hindi. Other than the argument at the end, I've kept the dialogues to a minimum but as I have no idea how anyone from Rajasthan talks, there are probably pieces of Punjabi mixed in to the dialogues. That was unconscious doing on my part. One more thing, Anandi-Jagdish are 8 and 12 respectfully. But they probably sound a little older so I'd like for them to be imagined in their very early teens.
Also, I realise that football is more of a western sport but ball needed to fit somewhere :P
This Author's note is getting as long as the fic itself so I'll shut up now. One final thing ' good luck to all the entrants, I'm sure my fic will pale against the others]
Anandi gathered her odhni around her as she skipped happily across the dusty path towards the portly man who sat behind a large pan, pulling out fresh gulab jamun and sizzling pakode. She licked her lips in anticipation and was glad that Dadisa had ordered for some sweets to be brought in the house to celebrate Anandi's first cooked meal in her sasural. Sasuma, knowing of her eagerness to step out of the four walls and explore, if only for a few minutes, had pressed a few rupees in her hand and with an endearing smile had told her to hurry back before Dadisa noticed her absence.
And so Anandi had made the short, but pleasant journey to the halwai [who looked as if he ate more of his goods than he sold] and with barely suppressed glee, exchanged a few rupees for a warm packet of jalebis. Barely ignoring the temptation to eat a few bites before reaching the haveli, Anandi turned and frowned at a group of boys, not much older than her, blocking her path.
They were four in total and the ball tucked under the arm of the scrawniest, identified them as at least half of the group that she had passed playing football. They leered down at her and the crease on her forehead deepened.
'Kya chahiye?'
Any other day her rudeness would have surprised her, but there was something about these boys that brought on an instant dislike. They however, found her words amusing and instead of being affronted, settled for laughing out loud.
The taller of the group, and the one Anandi decided she liked the least, stepped forward and pointed at her precious packet of jalebi's.
'Hum soch rahe the keh thumare madad karde in ko kane mein.'
The boys behind him laughed again and Anandi felt a surge of annoyance until one cocked his head to the side and grinned even wider.
'Arre yeh tho Jagdish ki Beendhni hai!'
This seemed to change something. The boys, if it was possible, looked more unpleasant and stepped closer, forcing her to stumble back.
'Phir tho thum humari bhabhi hui. Ab tho dhene hi parenge.'
The tallest took a swipe at her packet but Anandi, used to running from boys, ducked under his arm and side-stepped. Her mind had just started processing all the different possible way of escape when she heard an angry voice behind her.
'Anandi, thu yaha kya kar rahi hai?'
Relieved, Anandi spun around to find Jagdish who was shooting murderous glances towards the boys harassing her. He roughly pulled her arm and stepped in front of her.
'Meri beendhni ko kyu thang kar raha hai?'
The boys didn't seem to like the interference, or Jagdish for that matter, and one of them took a menacing step forward. Jagdish however had already balled his hands in to a fist and before the boy could move away, he took a punch, which sent the boy sprawling to the ground.
The other three tensed before moving forwards as Anandi looked on helplessly. But Jagdish hasn't been alone and soon his friends, six in number and no match for the boys, had hurried to his side.
Anandi bit her lip and anxiously wondered what Dadisa would say at the thought of her being in a midst of a fight. She needn't have bothered though, Jagdish grabbed her in a death grip and stalked in the opposite direction, not bothering to turn around and see Anandi stumbling behind him.
'Chore manne hath.'
She angrily tore her hand away and glared at him.
'Usko mara kyu? Teacher-ji kethi hain ke gusse se insaan kudh ka bura karta hain.'
Jagdish bristled and glared at her.
'Chup Kar Bandariya, yeh sab theri galti hain. Thuje kisne kaha tha akele ane ke liye? Wow tho acha hai ke meh apne dosto ke sath gilli danda kehl raha tha aur thumhe dekhliye.
Warna who larke thujhe thang karthe aur thu rothe hue ghar ajathi.'
Anandi frowned at him and placed her hands on her hips. She opened her mouth to retort but Jagdish hadn't finished.
'Ab sun, aaj ke bad thu ghar se akeli nahi nikle gi. Kuch chaye tho phir mere sath chalna paregha.'
'Sugna di''
'Sugna didi ke sath bhi nahin. Mere saath warna ghar par reh. Samjhi?'
Anandi opened her mouth to argue but knew by the stubborn set of his jaw that he wouldn't budge. Annoyed, she pushed past him as she screamed over her shoulder,
'Hath, meh thuje ek bhi jalebhi nahi dun ghi!'
Jagdish grinned and followed to make sure she made it safely back home.

Dadisa looking at her: Sochna bhi mat. maney pata hai tu kya chaahti hai.
Anandi. Nahi Dadisa Main toh khel rahi hoon suguna jiji ke saath
Dadisa: Khel rahi ho!!!!.
Anandi: Haan Gulli danda khel rahi hoon Dadisa.
Dadisa: Yeh kaunsa khel hai??
Anandi: Aapko nahi pata kaise khelna hai? Maari teacher ne sikhaya hai.
Dadisa: Accha. Kya sikhaya hai thumey thaarey teacher ney?
Anandi: Bahut kuch sikhaya'mainey achi terhe pata hai kaisa khelne ko. Deko dadisa, main aapko sikhathi hoon. aisey gulli ko marthey hai and Anandi hits the gulli but the gulli hits Dadisa forehead.
Dadisa screaming: Arey baapa, bachao bachao, Mar gayi main. Maar gayi.
Sumitra and Jagdish come running.
Jagdish: Kyunri bandriya, ab kya kiya thaaney.
Sumitra: Kya hua maasa
Dadisa: Kya hua??, dekho kitna khoon beh raha hai. Yeh sab thaarey laadon ne kiya hain. Mujhe maarney me tuli hai. Dekh ley sumitra, ek ek ko lekar sabko maarney waali hai, yeh chori. Maan meri baat ko. Iskey lakshan theek na hai.
Anandi makes a face.
Dadisa: Ab main dekh thi hoon tu gulli danda kaise khelegi and takes the dandi from a hand and breaks into two and throws it away.
Anandi starts crying
Jagdish: Kya dadisa!!! Kitni choti si baat ka bathandar bana rahi ho.
Dadisa: Yeh lo Sumitra, apna pair pe khada bhi nahi hai, par mujhe zabaan chalata hai. Sunrey jagdish, thaare baapu ney bhi marey saamne zubaan nahi lagya.
Jagdish: Dadisaaaa, yeh ek khel hai, har khel main tho chot toh hoti hi rehti hai.
Jagdish turns to anandi: Chal re bandariya, tu roh mat, kya hua agar danda toot gaya, maare paas bat aur ball bhi hai. Main tu sikhahoon kaisey khelna hain. Chalo usi se kheltey hai and takes anandi hand and leaves from there leaving suguna and sumitra to smile while Maasa is astonished.

Story of Jagdish
Its been two days now anandi accompanying me in school. Masterji even liking her more than me. Why this chuhiya is so good at study??š Even that ravi was teasing me 'tumhari biwni to jagdishya tumse bhi tej hai!!'š”
But she is really helping me out in studies.š How convincing she was when she was explaining that lesson to me!!š And in maths she is not good like me, atleast masterji like me more than her in mathematics.š How she was taking help of mine last day in maths homework!!š³ And also she was helping me in packing my school bag. How she was cheering me up when I was beating ravi in gullidanda.āŗļøš
So, why she's not here by time? I'll be even late if I'll wait for her. But this poetry is getting on my nerve, I can't solve this question without her, also I have to teach her that sum. She's really bad in maths, huh!
Story of Anandi
I have to hurry now, or jagdishya will fight with me again. Only one roti to go now'. What will I do without Saasuma?? She made all this rasoi for me so I can go and study. This daadisa, why she always keeping eye on me??š” Don't she have anything else to do. I have to be fast now, jagdishya is so lucky, he just have to play and study, nothing else to do. But saasuma told me, I cant escape from this work, or daadisa may wont let me go to school again. What a lovely place school is!!š I can learn, I can play and no daadisa there. I have to do rasoi, so I can go to school. š
My baapusa is really so good, he let me go to school against daadisa. Achcha hai, kakasa is not home these days, otherwise he wud never let me go to school. One day I shall be just like teacherji.š
Anandi hurried to the room, she knew jagdish will shout if she will b late.
'O Bandariya, kitni der lagti hai tumko, jaldi nahin aa sakti kya?'
'chillata kyun hai, mujhe rasoi bhi to karni thi, ek to who daadisa pura waqt mere aage piche mandarati rehti hai, rasoi nahin karoongi to mujhe ischool main bhi nahin jaane degi!! Waise tumhe itni hi jaldi thi to khud kyun padh nahin lete??'
'main to khud hi padh leta lekin phir mujhe laga main tumhari bhi madad kar du'
'Accha, tu meri madad karega?? Padhai main to main tujhse achchi hun, roj tumhari madad bhi karti hun'
(sumitra entered)
'tum log jhagda kyun kar rahe ho? Pata hai na tum dono ko ischool ke liye tumhare baapusa aaj naye kapde dene wale hai, agar tum dono ko jhagadte dekhenge to samjhenge ki tumko ischool main saath jana achcha nahin lagta'
'Maa , tum hi is chuhiya ko samjhao phir, hamesha meri burai karti rehti hai'
'Saasuma, woh to ye hi mujhe daantata rehta hai'
'Jagya, tumko to pata hai, anandi din bhar kaam bhi karti hai aur tumhari tarah padhai bhi karti hai, tumhe uski madad karni chahiye'
'Maa, ye daadisa anandi ke saath aisa kyun karti hai, padhai to achchi baat hai aisa masterji kehte hai, daadisa to khud bhi padhi nahin hai aur anandi ko bhi padhana nahin chahti'

(sumitra leaving, bhairav is reaching the room, sumitra sushhh.ed him, dono bachche padh rahe hai. Both are standing at the door for the while)
'jagdish , aaj tum log cricket khel rahein the na, tumne who balla kaise ghumaya tha, ball to hamari ischool se 100 gaj dur jaa ke padi thi'
'tumne dekha tha woh, bahut majha aaya tha''. Waise bhi padhai main tum achchi ho par khel main tum mujhe nahin hara sakti'
'pata hai, meri teacherji ne bhi hamse kaha tah, har bachche main yogyata hoti hai, koi padhai main, koi khel main to koi kaam main achcha hota hai. Mujhe pata hai tum Gulli danda bahut achcha khelte ho. Kya tum mujhe kanche khelna sikhaoge?'
'naa baba, daadisa dekh legi to tumko daategi, ek kaam karenge, kal hum upar chat per khelenge, wahan daadisa nahin aati hai'
'kitna majha aayega na jagdishya, hum subhna jiji ko bhi saath le lenge'

Jagdish to his friends : Chalo, aaj hum sab khele gulli danda.
Jagdish's friends: Chalo khele, yeh kya'., tu apni beendani koi bhi sath leke aaya. Jagdish looks back and is shocked to see anandi coming with suguna. All his friends start laughing.
Jagdish goes to Anandi with anger: arey nakk chadi, tu yaha pey kyun aayi hain.
Jagdish then looks at Jiji : jiji thuney is bandriya thaare saathi kyun leke ayi. Mere dost mujhe chida rahe hain.
Anandi makes a face.
Jiji (takes him aside and tells that): thumey pata hain, tarey nandoi se milna hai aur maa mujhe akeli nahi bhej rahi thi isliye thare paas leke aayi hoon.
Jagdish ponders on that thought : chal theek hai.
Jiji tells Anandi: Bhabhi mainey thare nandoi se milna hain. Tu yehe pe rehna. Main ek ghante main aathi hoon.
Anandi: par tum chori chori use kyun mil rahi ho? Use kehna ki ghar pey ah jaye. Chori se kaam karnay toh buri bath hai.. Yeh mujhe teacher ney sikhaya hai.
Jiji: yeh toh mushkil baat hai bhabhi, woh ghar nahi aa sakta, agar sab ko pata chala toh dadisa uske saath maney bhi ghar ke bhar nikal degi. Chalo main jaati hoon.
Anandi : theek hai jiji,lekin jaldi aana
Jiji: Theek hain bhabi and she leaves.
Jagdish: chal ma rey saath aur sun.. mere dosto ke saamne kuch mat bol. Ek jagah pe rehna.
Anandi: Theek hai' accha Tum kaunsa khel khel rahe ho!!
Jagdish: Gulli danda. Kabhi yeh khel kehla hai
Anandi: Gulli danda!!!!!. arey tu mat pooch. Thumhe nahi pata Main toh gulli danda main sabse tez hoon. Main tuje bhi hara sakti hoon. Main thare saath khelu?.
Jagdish: abbey bandariya, tare liye gulli danda nahi kal sakt. Yeh toh ladko ka khel hain. Chal udhar bait ja,'. maney khel na hain'.. aur sunn'.. ek jagah pe bait jana aur bandariyan ki terhe yeha waha mat jana.
Anandi makes a face, sits down at one place, and sees the game.
Jagdish and his friend start playing the game. Jagdish starts playing gulli Danda when he loses. He does not win. Jaggi with anger throws the stick and leaves fuming in anger and all his friends start laughing. He goes and sits next to anandi.
Anandi sees this and comes to the boys : aye choro, mainey bhi khel na hain.
Jagdish friend() makes fun of her and laughs() : chal chori tu jaa yaha se and apne khilone se khel. HAHA
Anandi : gulli danda kheloge marey saath.
Jagdish friend: tu humra saath kheloii?????. Abey sun jagya, tu haar gaya isliye tune apne beendani ko saamne laya hai kya.
Jagdish gets angry and comes to anandi
Jagdish: chal re chidya,
Anandi: Main nahi jaungi. Chalo lage shart. Agar, main haari,toh jo tum log bolo gey main waisa he karungi par agar tum log haar gaye toh jo bhi mera been kahega, thumey woh hi karna padega. Chalo manzoor.
Jagdish friends() ponder what she said() : theek hai and they place their bet.
Anandi plays the first gulli and she wins.
Jagdish friends are confused and tell yeh toh tere pehla bhalebaazi tha.
Anandi: Theek aur ek baar karoongi. Again she wins the baazi.
Jagdish friends tells her: tu akhri daav khel le, agar tune accha baazi diye toh tum jeet gayi.
Jagdish is very happy that he is winning.
Anandi : Theek hai and she wins the last shot.
Jagdish: yehhhhhh, main jeet gaya'. main jeet gaya and hugs anandi
Anandi smiles and tells chalo main toh shart jeet gayi.
Jagdish proudly tells deka yeh hai meri beendani.Deka uska kamal.
All jagdish friends ask her: Wah re bhabhi, arey tune gulli danda kaha se seekha hai. Hume bhi sikhao na.
Anandi : Maari teacher ne maney sikhaya hai' theek hai 'Aao main thumey sikha thi hoon and starts teaching them. She hits one shot and the gulli hits a man head.
The man : Maari gayo maari gayo.
All the children are shocked to see it is'. the teacher.
Jagdish and his friends see the man and all are astonished : Masterji hey bhagwaan maari gayo!!!
Masterji comes with blood on his forehead: Aarey chokro, sab ke sab yahape aavyo, kisne kiye yeh kaam.
All are frightened and Anandi is frightened and tells mainey mara hai masterji.
Masterji: Tu. Tu kaun hai chori?.
Jagdish: yeh maari bindani hai masterji.
Masterji: Thaari bindanii!!! Yeh sab thaari karamat hai'Kya ladko ke saath khel rahi ho. Jaake rasoii ka kaam sambhalo. Ja yahan se.
Jagdish takes Anandi's hand: Chalo and they run home.
Meanwhile Masterji meets Dadisa on the way to the doctor
Dadisa: Ram ram Masterji
Master: Ram Ram.. Arey baap re..
Dadisa: Kya hua, bahut khoon baha raha hai, kya baat hai Masterji?
Masterji: Yeh toh tere bahu ka kamal hai.
Dadisa: Kya bol rahe ho masterji? , Anandi aise kaam nahi kar sakti. Woh toh ghar pe hai.
Masterji: Accha, puccho useesay, Woh toh gulli danda khel rahi thi aur gulli mujhe zor se laga' aur kya bataoon '.woh toh dusro mardo de saath gulli danda khel rahi thi. Kya yehi hai tere bahu ka lakshan..cheee cheee'
Dadisa gets angry and leaves from there.
Dadisa comes home and angrily shouts : arey kal muhi kaha chupi ho? Aah maarey saamne?
Sumitra: Kya hua Maasa? Kya baat baat?
Dadisa: Bula tharey ladli chori Anandi ko? Uski aaj kher nahi.. Oye anandi ..
Anandi, suguna and Jagdish come down.
Dadisa: Kyun re chori aaj kaha gayi thi. Tu dusro mardo ke saath khel rahi thi. Manna kiya tha khelne ko.Yehi tharey maa-baap ne sikaya hai. Sharam nahi aayi. Aaj tere kher nahi and sees the bat and ball in Jagdish hand. She snatches the bat and hits Anandi with the bat.
