Dwelling on the Details: Shifting Focus

[Episode 96] June 27th, 2016

- I didn't know that Shaan was capable of such nautanki! He gives Matthew - I mean, Mukku - a solid slap as a fitting response to what Matthew planned to do with Rajni. Literal and figurative slaps. Needless to say, Matthew deserved those. But I'm still confused about Matthew's character traits. He's nasty and condescending towards Shaan, and I understand that. But he also takes the time to save a man on the street from possible health complications. Hmm. I guess I'd say Matthew's a fair weather friend. When things are going his way, he's accommodating and quite pleasant. When things don't go according to plan, he does a volte-face and becomes quite a threat. So what was the deal with him and Shogata, then? He claimed to never have been interested in her, to never have loved her...But he put up with her and her family and didn't seem to complain about the way she treated him when they were together. Was their relationship a way to maintain/increase status and prestige? For Shogata, I feel like this was the case. But for Matthew...? Did he just want a pretty trophy wife? If he finds out that Shaan stole Rajni back and cheated him of his investment again, what is he going to do? Shaan is going to be in trouble for sure, but would that extend to Shogata as well? There's that constant nagging worry in the back of my mind...How is this going to be resolved?

- Samaira Ghosh? She's a Bengali, too. Okay then. So Surili shouldn't have a problem with this girl...except I'm hoping that she will, because it was mentioned at the beginning of the show that Surili didn't approve of Shaan's last girlfriend. Which means she didn't approve of this Samaira Ghosh. Why? I hope we get more elaboration on that later!

- Shaan and his suitcase. It's kind of cute seeing him taking care of that suitcase like it's the most precious thing he possesses! That is actually true, though, because Rajni is his life's work. And she's his wife, too. He's so happy at the prospect of reuniting with her and hearing her "OK Shaan!" again, awww! But the idiot had to get distracted by a cheery laugh...and then everything goes downhill from there. It's worth noting that Shaan automatically reaches out to pull his suitcase with him as he gets up to investigate the pink blazer girl's identity. He takes Rajni with him as he moves towards Samaira. And he shouldn't have let go of that suitcase. Stupid bellhop takes the wrong suitcase. Good job, Shaan. You had her...and you lost her. Pay attention!

- Matthew's in a soup now. He probably can't even make a soup with those vegetables in the suitcase, since half of them look rotten. How great is it that the cameos in this show keep returning whenever they're needed for the plot? Mr. Patel is back to rebuke Matthew again! "Gadbad mein toh tum master ho! First time, robot kharaab tha! Second time, jisse robot samjha tha, woh ek insaan nikla! Ab yeh!" So Matthew realizes that Shaan double-crossed him again...and he's livid, bursting with anger. Once again, I'm worried about what this man might do. He's going to have police action taken against him first, though, right? This contracted project of his is the biggest issue that continues to loom over the story. No clue how this is going to be dealt with, unless Rajni herself somehow helps Shaan/Dev to make another robot...Would that be possible?

- Back at the Kants', celebrations are in full-swing because Rajni and Shaan are coming home! Surili comes into the living room to see her husband and sons dancing away; Shogata follows close on her mother's heels, covering her ears because of all the noise. LOL, the shock following the amused expression on her face when her mother suddenly starts dancing in that "classy" Bengali way! Special mention for the use of the word "Boka!" here as an endearment for Ghyaan, haha. Silly, of course she's happy that her super-efficient bahu is coming back now. Rajni can do all the housework better than Aishwarya ever could. Ugh, seriously, Surili? I thought you were better than this! I also noticed that Shogu is rather detached from the rest of her crazy family here - while the rest of them are somewhat united despite their differing opinions, she doesn't join them, not really. Maggie tries to hi-five Shogata, but the latter brushes off the former with a flourish and a look. She's definitely closest to her mother, and there's that adorable little moment where they join hands after they see that Shaan has come back home.

- Dev quietly wanders into the living room at this point, hanging around the outer fringe of the family gathering near where Shogata is. No one notices him as he crosses the room and looks around for Rajni. I was amused that they decided to play a variation of Shogata's theme in the background during this bit while Dev is going in circles, trying to figure out where Rajni is. Poor Dev is confused and more than a little concerned. Shaan comes up with a wishy-washy sentimental explanation, and while Surili is lamenting the fact that Rajni hasn't come home to her real family, Dev attempts to prod Shaan for an actual answer. He doesn't get one. I love that Dev stands up for Rajni when he realizes why Surili is so keen on having Rajni back home! Props to him for having the guts to speak out on his sister's behalf, especially since Surili and Shogata both essentially mock Rajni and tell him to shut up. Shogata and her silent communication with Dev in the middle of a conversation between him and her mother...Always fun to watch even the briefest of interactions between them. Speaking of which, it's pretty fabulous how Dev demands Shaan to tell him where Rajni is...and then Dev angrily ends up pushing Shaan's suitcase across the room...right at Shogata.

- "Bag mein kapde nahi, toh kya Rajni hogi?" And Shogata hits the nail on the head with her sharpness and sarcasm. She's been picking up on her brother's weird diction since the time he entered the house, and she sends a well-aimed verbal dart at him now...Without a clue as to how relevant her own diction actually is, she hits her target. Correct! This is fantastic irony right here. Rajni should have been in that bag. But she's not. Shaan sinks down onto a couch, stunned and shocked. Dev sets aside his examination of whatever article of clothing he's holding when he notices how troubled his friend looks. The only person to actually pay any attention to Shaan right now is Dev. He was already worried about the fate of his lokhand ki behen...and now things are suddenly looking a lot worse. Where is Rajni?

[Episode 97] June 28th, 2016

- "Pata nahi meri lokhand ki behen ko tu kahan chhod kar aaya! Pata nahi kya kar rahi hogi!" Dev is pacing and rambling, wondering if Rajni has eaten, bathed, and had enough water to drink. Just like a brother would be worried about his real (human) sister if she had gone missing all of a sudden. "Abbey, yeh toh gadbad ho gayi! Wahan se Rajni kiske paas gayi hogi?!" "Arrey, mujhe kya pata! Lekin ek cheez hai. Bag mein saamaan dekh. Ladkiyon ke kapde hai. Yeh bag definitely kisi ladki ka hai!" Oh, really? I had no clue! Dev counters Shaan with a potent dose of sarcasm. "Wow! Bhagwaan! Mujhe itna intelligent kyun nahi banaaya?!" He sends a glare at Shaan for good measure, but he doesn't stop there. Shaan is done with this conversation, but Dev isn't. Dev is so upset that he lets his emotions get the better of him, resulting in a stream of threats that is directed at a very annoyed Shaan. It's interesting that Dev and Shaan seem to take turns when it comes to being level-headed and emotional in crises. If Dev is thinking clearly, then Shaan is emotionally charged. If Shaan is thinking rationally, then Dev is swept up in his emotions. These guys, Shaan and Dev, are a team as much as Shaan and Rajni are. Dev and Rajni, in spite of their drastic differences in physical composition, are actually quite similar. They have similar characteristics and temperaments, for one...and they also share similar relationships with Shaan. Both are important parts of his life, but he doesn't seem to realize just how important they are. With Rajni, Shaan is gradually appreciating her value in his life more and more, but with Dev...there's still a long way to go for Shaan to recognize and acknowledge that Dev is an irreplaceable pillar of support in his life.

- Rajni is stuck in a hotel room with Shaan's ex-girlfriend. Well, she's stuck in a suitcase in a hotel room with Shaan's ex-girlfriend, to be exact. Samaira's thinking-out-loud gives hints of the sort of life she led during college - I'm taking at least some, if not all, of those memories to be linked to Shaan in some way. Because right after recounting those memories, she decides that she has to "look special" for a reunion that she hopes Shaan will attend. The Shaan that she knew might have attended that reunion (although I doubt he would have, personally, since, well, Rajni...) but the Shaan that we know definitely won't attend that reunion...because, well...Rajni.

- Auto Assemble Mode. A press of a button activates Rajni's auto-assemble mode, which is cool. But how does a bunch of separate parts get joined together like that? Magnetic field activation? She's done that before. But biggest question - where did that outer layer and the clothes come from? Is the outer layer something that automatically spreads over her metal body when she's fully assembled/activated? Did Shaan pack spare clothes in that suitcase? I get that this takes place in a universe where technology has the potential to be incredibly advanced, provided that it is made by someone with as much engineering brilliance as Shaan. But Rajni's change of clothes, unless she got clothes from Samaira's wardrobe, is a bit of sorcery that I hoped we'd be free from in a sci-fi show!

- "Ek toh tera yeh ghatiya software bhi kaam nahi kar raha!" And we're back to Shaan getting frustrated with Dev's software. I seriously think this could be a subplot of substance for Dev's character development. Dev has been integral in developing Rajni's programs, glitches notwithstanding, but most of the time, Shaan brushes off Dev's contributions. Until he needs Dev's help for something else, that is. Some more appreciation would be nice, you know, Shaan. What I would love to see as a subplot is Dev coming out of Shaan's shadow and showing everyone how much technical aptitude and intelligence Devendra Bangdu actually has. And similarly, that line of thought extends to Shogata, too. She previously mentioned, accidentally, that she needs to look at dress collections to copy them...That was a slip of the tongue on her part - she had meant to say "be inspired by them" but the truth had slipped out...Oops. At the time, that made me think that Shogata has no actual creative talent of her own. But more recently, a glimpse of the sketches and designs in her room made me rethink that first impression. Those drawings were gorgeous. I think she could become a great designer if she wants to. In any case, we don't really know what she does all day in the house. For someone who claims to advocate being an independent working woman, she doesn't seem to be much of one herself. And Shaan was the one who pointed that out to Shogata's face a while back. Ah, that was a brilliant scene! If Dev and Shogata help each other out, maybe they could start their own fashion line or something, with a snazzy website that Dev could design. Anything that gives these two a stronger sense of self and a true calling in life!

- LOL, Dev's explanation about why Shaan left Rajni at her maayka! "Issi baat pe jhagda hua! Aur ussi ke baad phir se ek aur jhagda hua! Aur phir jhagde-jhagde mein jhagda hua, aur jo aakhri jhagda hua -" He just keeps going and going and going, haha! That sounds like something he and Shogu would do, actually. Lovers' tiff escalating into full-blown, near fatal fight? Yeah, it already sounds like something the newly-married-and-devastated Bangdus are capable of, not the newly-married-and-separated Kants!

- "Ek chhote se jhagde ke wajah se main tujhe kya maayke chhod ke aaoonga? Waise bhi tera ab maayke mein bacha hi kaun hai? Ek tha, woh kauwa ban gaya. Ab ped ke ghosle pe chhod ke aaoon tujhe?" The crazy argument between Amrish and Surili ends like this. I died laughing. A++ for dialogue delivery in this scene! So fantastic, this jodi! Also, I loved Dev and Shaan's "Arrey, yaar..." type reactions, LOL. Dev was watching Surili and Amrish make a mountain out of a molehill and I'm willing to bet he was thinking, "What kind of insane in-laws have I ended up with?!"

- Ah, and Dev is the only one who can see through Surili's lament about Rajni and actually cares to be disgruntled about Surili's motives behind finding Rajni again. I wish he could speak up without being shot down instantly, though. All in good time? I hope!

- Shaan starts to lambast Dev's quick thinking, which is ironic considering the fact that Shaan the genius could have thought of an excuse, too, but either couldn't or didn't want to...Dev doesn't take this quietly, though. He points out that it's Shaan's fault that this entire problem materialized in the first place. Which is true. And then after a little bit, Dev backs down because his worry for Rajni takes over again, and that anxiety is more overwhelming than any anger he might feel towards his negligent friend at the moment.

- "Hello. I am C431. What can I do for you?" Rajni self-activates...and her tracker begins to make warbling noises. Dev's software is working just fine. As expected, Dev brings up the blame game issue and tries to confront Shaan about it...and also as expected, Shaan brushes the matter aside entirely, because he has more important things to focus on now. As I was watching this, I was naturally happy that they'd be able to find Rajni more easily now, but I was also annoyed that Shaan has made a habit of pushing his (one and only) friend aside time and again in various ways, especially since said friend always manages to stand by Shaan in times of difficulty. Seriously, Shaan. How hard is it to own up to a mistake and apologize?

- I've noticed that Shaan is prone to being very physical when he's expressing worry, irritation, or rage. He can become quite passive when he begins to bottle up his emotions, but anger is one emotion that he can't seem to control. No filter. That's what I always think when he begins ranting about something in a fit of frustration. Shaan takes his anger out on Dev a lot, unfortunately for the latter. I don't remember Dev ever reacting so violently when he has gotten mad at Shaan...Their differences in temperament are so fascinating to me! Without Rajni here to be Shaan's sounding board, Dev becomes Shaan's punching bag and stress ball - to the point of Shaan almost throttling the poor guy. At the end of it all, Shaan rushes off to find Rajni and Dev calls out, "Mujhe phone karna!" He won't be out on the streets of Mumbai searching for his sister, but he'll be in the loop regarding the progress of Rajni's rescue mission...provided that Shaan actually remembers to call him, that is.

- Rajni is completely blank. She knows nothing, not even her name. She looks around the unfamiliar place and as she wonders who made her, we see her mental/AI screen pop up. "My creator? No data found." This immediately reminded me of Rajni's first conversation with Shaan, in which several of her initial catchphrases were established. The most significant of those was "Main aapki creation hoon, Shaan." And now, Rajni doesn't know who she is. She doesn't know how she came to be or who made her. These basic questions about her identity have been wiped clean from her memory. God, this was heart wrenching to juxtapose! What really hit me hard, though, was the way Ridhima enacts newly-reactivated Rajni's first moment of consciousness. "Who is my creator?" Rajni's eyes dart from side to side, searching her database for something, anything, that could help her answer that question. She finds nothing. "No data found..." She says this quietly, in a somber tone that is such a far cry from the tone she used to use around Shaan in their early days as creator and creation...Hearing that change in tone was enough to break my heart. But then Rajni decides to find somewhere to wait until her creator returns...and she concludes that the almari is the best place to do so. Why the almari? Could she have some traces of memories embedded in her system still? My first reaction to this moment was that she came to that conclusion based on her own logic, free from any command or residual habit. After all, her memory is supposed to be clean. But I am not entirely sure...Bonus points for the detailing here, by the way. Rajni was charging herself up while she was considering what to do!

- "Rajni...!" Shaan has traced his robot all the way to the room she is currently resting in. I found his "Kaun idiot darwaaza khol ke ghoomenge?" to be amusing, given whose room he has just ambled into. He called Samaira an idiot just then - and rightly so. I mean, really, who leaves the door open like that? Anyway, Shaan ends up face to face with Samaira after years...and he's more than a bit dazed. He doesn't move away from her until she demands that he gets up off of her bed. "Utho! Idiot, utho!" He called her an idiot without meaning to, earlier. And she calls him one now. But it doesn't end here. She calls him "Weirdo" and "Stupid" too, later on. Affectionately? No idea...but still, that's not the nicest way to greet someone after being out of touch for so long. During this reunion, I felt like Samaira and Shaan were happy to see each other...They seem to be on the same wavelength at first, when they both exclaim, "What a pleasant -" but after that...that's where they diverge. There was something...off...something not quite clicking between them. Shaan is excited and awkward and a bit of a rambling, nervous wreck...but Samaira is cool and seems to have a dry, deadpan sense of humor in her reactions to Shaan's spontaneous comments. She also looks at him very strangely. Like he's strange to her. And that is what made me uncomfortable watching this exchange between these two people who were once so close to each other.

- "Shaan, stop! Go there! Go there! I'll be back." "Yeah." Okay, just a tiny point to make here. For some reason, I saw this and was oddly reminded of Dev and Shogata. I think it's the way Samaira commands Shaan to stay back and not follow her. It reminded me of the way Dev told Shogata to stay where she was when she followed him into Shaan's lab not too long ago. In Shaan-Samaira's case, I think it's interesting that their relationship broke off not because they didn't love each other (presumably) but primarily because they had different aspirations and priorities in life. I'm assuming that there was no lack of love between them, just that Shaan's workaholic nature created an obstacle to Samaira's plans to settle down and lead a nice, simple life with him. They know each other, loved each other, are happy to see each other after so long, and yet...they're not on the same wavelength. Shaan fumbles for words and remains dazed until Samaira steps out of his line of sight. It's been a while, it happens. But then, in contrast to that, there's the curious case of Dev-Shogata. They know each other extremely well, disliked each other since childhood, and in their first encounter after what I'm assuming has been quite a long time, they clash in a verbal battle that ends with Shogata challenging Dev to stay 10 steps away from her. "Ab itni hi door rehna. Isse aage mat badhna...Stop!" Oh, and she also calls him an idiot. But there's a familiarity between these two. No awkwardness at all. And their relationship seems to be on equal footing. Although Shogata believes herself to be out of Dev's league, status-wise, in terms of emotions they're both equally invested in besting each other. They couldn't be more different in nature at first glance, but that doesn't put Dev in an awkward position. He's definitely not rendered speechless by the woman in front of him. If anything, she makes him say things he wouldn't ever say to anyone else.

- Shaan jolts back to normal for a moment and scolds himself for behaving so pathetically. "Aise koi baat karta hai ladki se?! THE ex-girlfriend hai woh! Control yourself! Kitna cheaply behave kar raha tha tu! *surprised tone* I feel like Dev now! Bechara kaise feel karta hoga roz!" Ah, so when Samaira isn't with him, Shaan becomes the Shaan that we know. He criticizes his own odd behavior, and I'm just glad that even if only for a minute, he recognized that this is not how he should be acting around his ex-girlfriend. But hey, what's with the jibe at Dev? Is Dev really that hopeless when it comes to talking with women? Come to think of it, I can't imagine Dev in a romantic relationship...but he's really sweet and compassionate and doesn't have a massive ego! What's not to love about Dev?

- Shaan, Samaira, and the orange dress. Umm...Shaan? What happened to the "control yourself!" command? He gets distracted by a pretty face from his past and shifts focus from where it should be. Idiot. I don't know if I'm the only one who picked up on a slight difference between the Samaira in Shaan's daydream and the Samaira in Shaan's reality. I thought the former was more passive, almost mannequin-like...and the latter can't be described that way at all. Why orange, though? Of all the colors out there...why orange? Sigh.

- Shaan and Samaira are out of sync. There's no other way to describe it. He wants a handshake, she expects a hug. They can't get it together, so Samaira takes control. She takes the lead, commands him. And he complies. I can already sort of see why their relationship didn't last. "Hold on, Shaan! Wait, wait, wait." She gives him a look. "Stupid." And she wraps her arms around his middle and hugs him. Shaan doesn't respond at first, immobilized with his hands awkwardly in the air...and that expression on his face is one of confusion. I wondered if he was a bit put off by the way she called him 'Stupid' as well...He doesn't move until Samaira tells him, happily, "You can hug me!" Umm, okay. The look on his face, basically. But he eventually relaxes (a bit too much) into the hug...Ugh. The best thing about this scene, hands down, is the fact that Rajni has been watching the entire reunion play out in front of her eyes. And what she says at the end took my breath away. From her vantage point, she sees a man and woman embracing after so much strained conversation..."Humans." That tone and the way she looks at them...A hint of disapproval there? Or did I just imagine that? All that's missing is "Complicated!" That bit of the combined catchphrase Rajni created based on Shaan's constant use of the the word...And that made me wonder...Has Shaan left an imprint on Rajni, somehow, without intending to...?

[Episode 98] June 29th, 2016

- Shaan and Samaira on a (not)date at the place where they used to go on dates all the time...This is just so painful to watch. Shaan is adorable but painfully awkward. Foot in the mouth, damage control-worthy stuff, this. Samaira almost lets it slip that she had planned to go to the college reunion for him - like she knew he was going to be there - but she frames this bit of information in a way that suggests she had no plans of going there at all. She's good at recovering. Much better than Shaan. I suppose that's why she's a lawyer now. Good with words.

- Every time Shaan trips up or begins to ramble, Samaira gives him a look. It's almost like she's...tolerating him. Tolerating the quirks in his personality that weird her out...It's quite evident from the way she behaves, like the whole incident with the spoon and the ring, that she knows him well. She knows that it's been 3 years since they last met, that he has a tendency to talk to himself, that he tries and fails to be surreptitious, and that he can't muster up enough courage to ask her a relationship status question straight to her face. Yes, she knows him well. But it's not enough to know those things. They're both human, so on that level, they are more compatible than Shaan is with Rajni. But there's a gulf between them even as they sit across the table from each other and talk. Samaira's always at least 2 steps ahead of Shaan. He has to catch up with her, and I feel like she's the one in control of this relationship. Out of sync. Rajni, however, is compatible with Shaan's lifestyle, his crazy family, and his personality, quirks and all. She keeps up with him and stays by his side, literally and figuratively. They're on the same wavelength. In sync. Her only fault is that she is a robot.

- "Oh, god. Samaira ke chakkar mein main Rajni ko bhool hi gaya!" Yes. Thank you, Shaan. Finally he realizes that he had shifted focus from the very reason he landed up in this part of the city in the first place! He almost reveals that he is married, attributing the changes in his nature to an "aurat" in his life...Rajni. But Samaira doesn't find that out, because Shaan covers it up. He doesn't know where Rajni is or what condition she's in. He has to find her first.

- Samaira's somewhat crestfallen reaction when Shaan tells her that he'll probably be better off staying single since he is always busy in the lab...That caught my attention more than anything else in this entire scene. Samaira reaches out to touch his hand across the table, offering him some advice. "Shaan. Kaam mein zaroorat se zyaada ghusne ki galti dobaara mat karna." Shaan just looks at her, silent. And this, THIS is the problem. For someone like Shaan, who has been shown to be unbelievably dedicated to science, driven by a passion for engineering and robotics, to the point of excluding all else from his life, including personal relationships with his family and his now-ex-girlfriend...his work, Rajni, is his passion, the central focal point of his adult life. Samaira couldn't understand this and she didn't want to. To her, he wasn't worth it. He was useless. She still doesn't understand him. To him, I daresay, in spite of the love he had for her, she was a distraction. Both of them, 3 years down the line, continue to have a soft spot for each other. But that's not enough. There are still things that they most likely won't be able to resolve because their outlooks and priorities in life are still very different. Rajni was and still is the center of Shaan's life. Samaira is still a distraction. A sweet, clever distraction, but a distraction nonetheless.

- Samaira has a point when she says that Shaan has changed, in the sense that he finally left his work behind and forgot about something important because of her. Yep. Shaan is losing focus. He's losing it. Shaan almost doesn't seem to recognize himself when he lapses into being excessively romantic. He checks his behavior and thinks that Rajni's influence is what has made him like this...which reminds him. He has to find Rajni! Thank god. Samaira's Shaan was a shock to see, since we've only really known Rajni's Shaan so far. But I think it is neat how we can see differences in how he acts around each of them and see how each of these two women has affected him.

- Oh, and I might as well just add in a point about the last bit of the episode here. When Dev calls up Shaan and tells him that Amrish knows about Rajni's disappearance now, Shaan blasts Dev apart for being a "panauti" in his life. I know Shaan is stressed out and irritated, but he's brought a lot of this upon himself. Granted that Dev accidentally revealed the truth, but that doesn't give Shaan the liberty to blame everything on Dev. It's not Dev's fault that Rajni went missing in the first place. It's not Dev's fault that the manual tracker is lost. Dev fires back, "Ghumaane mein PhD toh tune ki hai!" And he's right. Absolutely right. Not that Shaan is going to listen to him. As usual.

Meanwhile, in Shaan's lab...

- "Yeh kya kar diya, Shaan, tune? Rajni ki memory delete kar di. Jab Rajni waapas aaye, toh yeh card daal kar, usse bilkul pehle jaisa banaa doonga. Ek toh Shaan bilkul responsible nahi hai! Mujhe abhi tak phone kar ke bataaya nahi Rajni mili, nahi mili - koi responsibility nahi hai! Paagal!" This is the most serious and intense I have ever seen Dev. And it's so beautiful to see. Beneath all the childlike innocence and high-strung emotions, there is a man who, in essence, is extremely serious about those close to his heart and incredibly sorted when it comes to supporting a friend in times of need. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Dev may be emotional, but he is clear-headed when the going gets tough. He's the most dependable friend anyone could ever hope to have. And he is not afraid to call Shaan out on his shortcomings. It's another matter entirely that Shaan doesn't process any of this. It's quite clear to me who is actually the more perceptive and mature one out of the two friends...And I think that's fascinating!

- "Excuse me, Mr. Chichore..." And Dev's Jungli Billi is back. "Shogata raasta kaat gayi. Wow, Dev." He mutters under his breath, but she can hear him. "What?!" Shogata stalks closer to him, circling the table, and comes to a halt next to him. "Jab ek insaan achha kaam karne ke liye jaata hai aur billi raasta kaat leti hai, na, toh woh darr jaata hai! Waise jab jab main achhe kaam karta hoon, aur tum raasta kaat leti ho, toh main double darr jaata hoon! After all, tum billi ki naani ho, na!" "Oh, shut up! Do you really think I'm interested in your nonsense?!" Aah, and I love Dev's expression in response! Shogata is Dev's distraction. And vice versa. She didn't have to come into the lab at all, he didn't have to talk back to her at all. But they both choose to do so...and they get carried away, as usual.

- Why on earth would Dev have Shogata's phone? She believes he wanted to look at pictures of her, that's why. "Aye! Ek insaan khoobsurti dekhega! Aasmaan dekhega, baarish dekhega, paani dekhega, phool dekhega, patte dekhega. Tum jaisi ko kyun dekhoonga?!" He practically spits that question out at her. This instance is the first time he addresses her beauty directly, I think. She doesn't look perturbed much, if at all. "Oh, really? Toh Shogata ki photographs pehle kyun churaayi thi tumne?" It's endlessly intriguing to me that Shogata keeps insinuating that Dev is interested in her, is attracted to her, and wants her. Ever since their first one-on-one interaction, she has been accusing him of this. Over and over again. Every time, Dev counters her accusations in one way or another. Shogata never relents. And all I could think was, "Why does she always jump to the same conclusion? Every single time...why?"

- "I will look for it! I will look for it." Haha, Shogu is such a cutie. She ignores Dev's protests and passes by, looking ever so poised and living up to the billi moniker that he bestowed upon her. He gets up from the bench, thoroughly distracted now, trying to drive her out. "This is our private place!" "Let me see!" "Nahi! Niklo yahan se! Get lost!" "You...!" The ensuing tussle between them results in a lot of hair-pulling, pushing, and shoving...Oh, and Shogata's shoe is the reason why Rajni's memory chip ends up hidden under the coffee table. Dev, Shogata - a bit of control, please?! Waise, this place is an ideal secret rendezvous spot...Just saying.

- Maggie walks in on the two of them going in circles and I thought it was hilarious how she assumes immediately that they were up to something before she got there. Dev gives Shogata a little push forward, even, and she lets out a squeak of surprise. That just makes it look like you have something to hide, guys. The truth about the phone comes out. Shogata's face is priceless! She's way too adorable, oh my gosh! And Dev's reaction to her trying to downplay everything - that disgruntled look is too cute! Neha and Neel, please have my heart forever. These two are SO fantastic together! An absolute joy to watch!

- "Oh! Shogata bhool gayi hogi! Itna stress mein jo rehti hai aajkal!" LOL, Shogu! She looks over her shoulder at Dev when she says "stress" because he's brought so much chaos into her life. Point to be noted, though - Shogu came here of her own free will and provoked him this time. He was working, yaar, Shogu! Anyway, Maggie thinks she knows what's up. "Ohhh! Bhool gayi thi...ya Dev se milne ka bahaana chahiye tha? Arrey! Pyaar mein aisa hi hota hai!" She thinks they wanted alone time...and what better place than a deserted lab?

- "Please! What pyaar are you talking about?!" "Pyaar matlab lowe! Lowe matlab pyaar!" And I still think it's fantastic that Shogata looks over at Dev with a sort of "Can you believe this?" expression on her face as Maggie teases them about being in love with each other. The horror that sets in on both of their faces a second later is hilarious. "Love? Shogata and Dev...?!" Never! Never ever.

- "Aap jaayiye yahan se, please!" "Mmm! Mujhe bhagaana chahti ho? Main sab samajhti hoon, naughty girl!" Amazing. This is all kinds of amazing. That's exactly what it looks like to someone who doesn't know what Dev and Shogata's relationship is really like. It surprised me that Shogata is quite composed when she replies, given what her bhabhi thinks is going on here. Props to her, haha. "Yeh sab drama hai, main sab samajhti hoon!" Maggie won't stop teasing, and that's when Shogata starts to snap. The mortified and disgusted expression on her face is absolute gold, haha. "Oh NO! Please, go! Gosh! I don't know why I have to DEAL with such people!" Aggravated hand waving and endless frustration! She's sooo cute! I just really, really love Neha's dialogue delivery and expressions in this scene. This line especially. SO adorable!

- "Hum tum...ek kamre mein band ho...aur chaabi kho jaaye!" Realization hits Shogata like a ton of bricks and her gaze flies to Dev, who is perched on the table, still trying to handle the rope in his hands. "Kya! Iske saath ek kamre mein?!" One-upmanship even when it comes to committing suicide. These two just never stop. "Give me this rassi!" So dignified, haha! "Meri rassi hai, chhod!" A tug-of-war ensues, ending with Dev scurrying to hide behind Shogata, begging her to save him from something she can't see. He clings to her shoulders and she keeps trying to shrug him off of her, but he just won't let go, haha. "WTH! Shogata par chance mat maaro!" And there it is again. Why does she always assume that he's trying to hit on her? "Chance nahi maar raha! Please, Shogata, mujhe bachaa lo!" "What 'bachaa lo?' Kisse bachaa lo?" For some reason, I really like the bit where he points and she follows his finger with her gaze, trying to find what he's so terrified of.

- So Shogu was perched on the bench this whole time? Awww! I love the way she gets up and steps down from the bench, all grace and poise, arms elegantly out by her sides for balance. She moves so easily, with light steps, almost like she's gliding. So very cat-like! As soon as her feet hit the ground, a hand goes up to push her hair into place again...and then with a flourish, she tells Dev to shut up and stop panicking. All in one smooth, connected motion. So impressive. Love it!

- "Shogata kisise darti nahi hai. Just wait and watch." And then she sees the cockroach on the floor and freaks out. Same, Shogu, same. Dev told her not to go over there, but she didn't pay any heed to his pleas - so she and Dev both end up trying to get away from the bug, running around the lab again, LOL. I don't know why she didn't just get back up onto the table again...But I love that she ultimately runs straight into Dev's arms, without even realizing it. They stay like that, her hands on his shoulders, his somehow on her waist...and when Surili and Amrish come to investigate the source of all the noise coming from the lab, that's how Dev and Shogata are found. The way they're standing does make it appear like she could have been kissing him...But what caught my attention most was the fact that when they pull away from each other to look at Surili and Amrish, Dev and Shogu don't separate. She still stands there with her hands resting on his shoulders and he doesn't move his hands away from their position at her waist. And they both look confused, very confused. Like they're clueless about what's happening and aren't aware of their proximity at all. Shogu furrows her eyebrows and Dev asks, "Kya ho raha hai...?" And it's when they finally look at each other again and see exactly where their hands are that they completely relinquish contact. She screams, he jumps about a foot in the air. And for once, Shogu doesn't try to wipe herself clean of her contact with Dev. He's the one who is trying to get rid of all traces of her from his shirt.

- I still think it's amazing that Maggie, Surili, and Amrish all come to the exact same conclusion when they see Dev and Shogata in the lab. Curiously, Maggie doesn't express any surprise at this. Instead, she teases Shogata and encourages her to carry on...In contrast, Surili and Amrish are predictably shocked to see that their only daughter, who loathes the guy she's being forced to live with, is now apparently engaging in secret trysts with him.

- "Oh! Oh! Mom! Dad! Aap galat samajh rahe hai! Hum log cockroach ki wajah se chipak gaye the!" Her tongue slips and she catches herself a bit too late. "I mean, chilla rahe the!" Like mother, like daughter, they say. Surili is the one to fly into a panic this time, which sends Dev rushing over to Shogata again. He instinctively reaches out to grab her shoulders and I don't even know if she cared to notice at that point...but he realizes that he's touching her again and pulls his hands back, as if burned from the contact. Their dynamic is such a paradox. They're so comfortable with each other that bickering and bantering could potentially merge into what I'd call "bickerflirting" without them being consciously aware of it. They're so at ease with each other that they can be physical and push each other around and constantly invade each other's personal space...Whatever these two have between them is rooted in familiarity and an odd sort of intimacy that neither would admit to having in a million years. But it's there. And it shows.

[Episode 99] June 30th, 2016

- Rajni without her memory is pretty darn adorable. "Kuch yaad nahi aa raha. Main kahan se aayi? Kyun aayi? Kaise aayi? Main kahan hoon?" A++ for expressions and voice modulation! I wanted to give Rajni a hug. "New information! Mere pati bhi hai!" Yep. Thank goodness, at least that bit of information is in Rajni's database now, thanks to Samaira.

- Samaira thinks this is all her fault and she feels awful about it. I was thinking, in a roundabout way, this is kind of her fault...If she hadn't come into Shaan's life at this juncture, he wouldn't have lost focus on getting Rajni back home. He wouldn't have let Rajni go...and she would've been with him now. But to be honest, Samaira isn't the truly culpable one in my eyes. That position is reserved for Shaan.

- Resolving to get Rajni back to her husband and home no matter what, Samaira sets out to try and bring some of this stranger's memories back. I like that Samaira is extremely concerned about this very odd, supposedly delirious girl who suddenly landed up in her hotel room with no recollection of anything whatsoever. She is worried enough to take personal responsibility for the girl. Samaira, the good Samaritan.

- Shaan's desperation to trace Rajni's location turns him into a scavenger, retracing his steps and digging through piles of trash, literally, to find the tracker device that he had lost in a moment of distraction. I honestly can't say that I felt bad for him after what he told Dev earlier, but he redeemed himself slightly in my eyes here. He finds the tracker, but it's not working. "Oh, Rajni. Kahan ho, yaar? Itne bade sheher mein kaise dhoondhoon main tumhe? Tumhara Shaan tumhe bahut miss kar raha hai. I just hope tum jahan bhi ho...safe ho."

Meanwhile at the Kant residence...

- Amrish has pulled all of his shoes out and is dusting them off, ready to welcome Shaan with chappals in hand. I'm with Amrish on this. From the family's point of view, Shaan lied to them about Rajni's whereabouts and obviously it hurts that he didn't trust them enough to tell them the truth. They had to find out from Dev. Ouch. Dhyaan's cool-headed nature is commendable, I must say. He proposes that they should all look for Rajni as well. Bless this devar. He's the best. But there's one problem. Where to start? Amrish has an answer to that question. Bangdu.

- So I know it would be apt to describe Shogata as a cat and Dev as a mouse during their fights...But right now, Dev seems more like a stray puppy in search of food. The first time I watched this scene, I found it funny, weird camera angles notwithstanding...It had a surreal, dreamlike vibe to it. But the more I thought about it afterwards, the more awful I felt about the treatment that Dev received from the Kants. So maybe nightmarish would be a better way to describe it. I know that it was Surili's idea to basically bribe Dev with food. I expected that. What surprised me, and not in a good way, was Amrish's behavior, and to a lesser extent, Dhyaan's as well.

- Up until this point, I thought Amrish was the most civil person towards Dev among the Kant family. I thought about this for a while, and I can attribute Amrish's uncharacteristically callous behavior to a few things. Amrish's favorite bahu has gone missing and Shaan is responsible for this. Shaan told Dev that Rajni is missing, but apparently forbid Dev to tell anyone else. Dev let the truth slip...and unfortunately for him, Amrish's anger, which should be taken out on Shaan, is now being (mis)directed at Dev. I think Dhyaan's concern for Rajni might also explain the reason why he acts the way he does towards Dev here. Or maybe he just looks down on Dev like the rest of his family does. I also began to wonder if Amrish harbors some degree of disapproval towards Dev (whom everyone is now calling "Bangdu") due to the fact that Shogata is locked in a marriage with a man who is so beneath them in status and appears to be making Shogu's life miserable. Just a thought that crossed my mind. Amrish going into protective, angry father mode is understandable. But literally throwing scraps of food to a man, like one would toss leftovers to a dog on the street? What happened to humanity?

- Ah, Shogata. She's the embodiment of poise. Even when eating a jalebi, she is perfectly composed. She even throws in a glare at Dev for good measure while denying him the little sweet that she's eating. Their relationship is quite twisted, just like that jalebi, actually. Shogu seems to get this perverse pleasure from seeing Dev in trouble. Payback for all the trouble he has caused in her life so far? Sigh. What an unusual dynamic these two have. She has her own set of names for him - to her, he is "Bangdu", "Idiot", "Bhukkad" and god knows what else...For the first time, Shogata proclaims, entirely of her own accord, that Dev is her legal husband, so she is the only one who has the right to punish him. That took me completely by surprise - albeit in an angry haze, she just staked her claim on him willingly, verbally. She sees red and she knocks him down impulsively, without thinking. Shogata Kant Bangdu is a passionate woman, with the potential to be as sweet as she is fierce. When Shogata's temper flares, as it often does in front of Dev, she is all sparks and fire. She's a spitfire and I think Dev is the only one who can withstand those flames. At the end of this episode, I had only one question. If Shogata's hate is this passionate in nature...then how passionate is her love?!

[Episode 100] July 1st, 2016

- Rajni is a robot of many talents. In her default state, she is an automated meteorologist, carrier of breakfast trays, and travel guide's assistant with a lovely face, a lovely voice, and lovely outfits. Wherever she got this pistachio green floral churidar suit, I want one. I could say that about almost all of her clothes, actually. Anyway, it amuses me that Samaira dismisses Rajni's weird behavior and speaking style as side effects of getting hit on the head by that hotel decorative piece - there's that amnesia trope turned on its head! Pun intended! She figures that Rajni, now Khushi, speaks a bit strangely anyways. No big deal. We're all a bit weird, aren't we? Oh, and I also liked that Samaira assumed all of Rajni's amazing weather knowledge, high tide and low tide included, came from looking at the newspaper. Nice.

- How great is Ridhima's voice modulation, though? Rajni has been reactivated for only a little while, and I'm already impressed with the way Ridhima's nailing the pleasant, robotic tone again. I expected nothing less! "Mumbai...ek aisa sheher hai...jo kabhi nahi sota. *a beat* Just like me." And every single time I watch this, at this exact point, I burst out laughing.

- Samaira cancels her flight back to Kolkata because she's so dedicated to finding Rajni's home. Aww! People like her are hard to find in this day and age. #Respect

- I loved the bit with Rajni and the pamphlets. The mood shift when the kid sees the water bottle and asks if he can take a sip because his throat is parched from speaking so much, after which Rajni decides to help him - little moments like these are what touch my heart the most. The minor characters in this show are wonderful! The tapori pamphlet kid is a rockstar! That's what I call style!

- Aaand Lukkha #1 is back. Balwant is hilarious but so annoying, man! The best thing about him is his music, haha. Such a cartoon, this guy. Taking advantage of a person's memory loss like this is reprehensible. Balwant is such a...Ugh. Oh, but Rajni knows how to handle him this time around, thanks to the Tapori language setting. Phew!

- "Apun ka memory ka locha chal raha hai." Tapori/Mawaali Rajni is all kinds of awesome! Hands down, this was the highlight of the 100th episode for me! Expressions ka bhandaar, this woman! SO fantastic! And the way she walks! #DesiSwag

Meanwhile at the Kant residence...

- The first thing I noticed was Shogata's clothing, not going to lie. She was in that cute blue dress for the past few episodes (I want one, it looks so comfortable!) and now she does a complete 180, showing up in distressed jeans and an embellished tank top. What happened to you, Shogu? I saw the jeans and immediately thought back to Neha's intro scene, when Shogu returned home and ran into Rajni for the first time. Angry Gareeb deja vu!

- Maggie's amazing idea to find Rajni, LOL. Surili and Shogu's reactions mirrored my own. If they can recognize Rajni's face, then why on earth would they need to see if Rajni's kangans fit on any random woman's wrist? Maggie, please come up with a better idea next time.

- Oh, Shogu. A princess in her ivory tower, a spoiled brat, a child at heart...? She doesn't want to put in the effort to go looking for Rajni, so Amrish scolds her, and I think he has a valid point. Rajni would have gone out of her way to find her family if someone had gone missing. Then again, she'd be able to do so far more efficiently because she's not human. I digress. Shogata and her comfy, cozy, entitled life! She says one line, and I'm back to thinking about what she'd do if she ever ended up living out her worst nightmare in a one-bedroom flat. Money is not everything, my darling.

- Random stuff! Aishwarya is back? That's dedication for you, boss. Her bhoot idea is jokes, oh my gosh! "Bhootiyat" LOL! Anokhee's ability to make crazy noises and crazy faces never fails to amaze! Surili and her theater background, ahaha! Did people leave the theater because she was so good at acting or because she was so bad at it? Haha, I wonder...

Aww I was waiting for u to finish your review...awesome..samaira seems nice and genuine..but yes, like you mentioned, tends to look down upon shaan..by that logic, she wud fit right into suriliz haven of women taking their husbands for granted..she loves shaan, but does not respect him..which ruins it for me..also, shiny doshi tends to ham a bit in the monologues..
Rajni in mawali avatar was a treat..give riddhima any dialect, any language and she aces it..easily one of the best actors on screen today..even memory-erased rajni is so empathetic to people and their needs..shudder to think what Matthew wud have made out of her with his espionage and murder-for-hire plans..
Balwant is an ass and will always remain so..it takes a despicable being to take advantage of an amnesiac married woman..

Thanks so much for reading! Really appreciate you taking the time to comment as well! 😊

Your point about how Samaira loves Shaan but doesn't respect him - that is exactly the reason why I am uncomfortable with the way Shaan is reacting to Samaira's reappearance in his life. I understand why he's behaving that way, though, and it will take some time for him to recognize the signs, I think.

Yes! Seriously, Ridhima can take any language/dialect and reel off those lines smoothly! Incredible talent and a very malleable actor! This show just keeps showcasing more and more of her skills. So very impressive.

Oh, I totally agree about Rajni's default empathy, too! That's very interesting, isn't it? She doesn't feel empathy, per se, but she knows that she was made with the purpose of helping others...So by that logic, her desire to help others makes her "empathetic." She has a sense of morality, too!

Thinking about how Matthew planned to reconfigure her for immoral deeds makes me cringe. Somehow I doubt we've seen the last of him...I wish didn't feel that way, but there it is. Balwant, on the other hand - I really hope we've seen the last of that lukkha! Then again, he deserves to be taken to task by Amrish and the Kant brothers for what he tried to do to Rajni twice now.
