World Orphans Day

Tragically, millions of children all over the globe have become orphaned for many reasons: war, famine, displacement, disease or poverty. To make sure that they are not forgotten, once a year there is a special day dedicated just to them: World Orphans Day, which falls on the second Monday of each November. This special day has been put in place in order to draw attention to the plight of the world's orphans, and so on this day people are encouraged to actively participate to help raise awareness, support and funding for motherless and fatherless children worldwide. A noble cause if there ever was one!

The History of World Orphans Day

The first people to officially care for orphaned children were the Romans, who opened the first orphanage in history in around 400 AD. Long before them, however, both Jewish and Athenian law required that orphans be supported until age 18. The great philosopher Plato once said, "Orphans should be placed under the care of public guardians. Men should have a fear of the loneliness of orphans and of the souls of their departed parents. A man should love the unfortunate orphan of whom he is guardian as if he were his own child. He should be as careful and as diligent in the management of the orphan's property as of his own or even more careful still. Latr, in Medeival Europe, orphans were cared for by churches. By the early 1900s, the amount of orphans in England had reached truly alarming proportions, not to mention the conditions in which the orphaned children lived, which were often appalling and abusive. Charles Dickens' most famous novel, "Oliver Twist, depicts perfectly the hardships orphaned children had to endure in orphanages. In modern times, researchers are almost unanimous in their claim that orphanages are the worst possible care option for children, as they do not receive the right amount of attention or physical contact to develop properly. This has caused many people, usually Westerners, to decide to adopt children from impoverished countries to give them a chance at a better life. Sadly, this trend has also lead to a large number of scams being perpetrated on unsuspecting parents-to-be, many of whom have paid enormous amounts of money to adopt children who had been bought from their parents for very little. World Orphans Day was created by The Stars Foundation to raise awareness about the number of children in this world who lack something most of us take for granted: parents. The Stars Foundation's wish was for this day to motivate people to do anything they can to help.

How to Celebrate World Orphans Day

As mentioned before, anything you can do to help could make a world of a difference to an impoverished orphan, so take some time to figure out what you can do and get to it! You could, for example, organise an event to raise money. There is also the possibility to sponsor an individual child in an orphanage of your choice in a particularly poor part of the world, or to invest in education programs that aim to give orphans a new start in life. There are many ways to help orphans and this annual day aims to bring those ideas to as wide an audience as possible.

World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day was first introduced in 1991, and founded by both the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization. In reaction to the rise in cases of Diabetes worldwide, it was decided to choose a day of the year to raise awareness of Diabetes and related causes. The day chosen was the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, a medical scientist who co-discovered Insulin and was the first person to use it on humans.

The theme of World Diabetes Day regularly changes. For example, the theme for the day between 2009 and 2013 was education and prevention, and in the past such themes have been used such as human rights, lifestyle, obesity, the disadvantaged and vulnerable, and children/teenagers. Various events around the world mark the day including raising awareness in the media, lectures and conferences, sporting events, and leaflet/poster campaigning. "Going blue is another global event to mark the day, where people wear blue and landmark buildings and monuments around the world are lit up in blue, to help spread awareness of the day.

Operating Room Nurse Day

While the surgeon may be the star of the operating theatre, without the work of a team of skilled and reliable operating room nurses vital surgical procedures could not take place. These hard-working professionals are responsible for all aspects of patient care during a medical operation, including welcoming, assessing and prepping patients, handling medical equipment, helping with procedures and maintaining a sterile environment. It is one of the most demanding nursing jobs, as more complicated operations are known to go on for many hours on end and nurses need to maintain focus and work constantly for long periods without a break. That's why it can be easily agreed that these lifesavers definitely deserve their own dayjust one day of every year, when people can stop and think about just how much they owe the operating room nurses who helped make their operations successful.

The History of Operating Room Nurse Day

The history of nursing dates back well over 2000 years. The Hippocratic Collection describes skilled care and observation of patients by "attendants on several different occasions, which were most likely the first real nurses mankind has ever known. During later historical periods, both nuns and monks tended to provide nurse-like care to the sick. Examples of this can be found in the histories of many religions, such as Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam. Archaeologists have also discovered plenty of evidence suggesting humans have been performing various types of surgery for up to 9,000 years, with the earliest Egyptian surgical texts dating back to about 1,500 BC. In 1989, the State Governor of Iowa, Terry Bransted, decided to help reward operating room nurses for all of their (often underappreciated) work and put through an executive order to establish an annual Operating Room Nurse Day.
