ZEE, your subtitles are so lazy!

This wasn't the case when I used to watch two other Zee shows early last year. but the subtitles are lazy for this show--Badalte Rishton ki Dastaan. Don't know if it's also the case for the other shows on now.

I think I'm going to start filing the utterly lazy job whoever's responsible is doing. I don't understand why sentences cannot be translated as they are, instead of summarizing the meaning, but not the words. I don't mean cultural specific stuff, like when Nandini talked about her Mother's sindoor, the subtitles said something else. That's okay.

I'm talking about stuff like...

Earlier this week, Nandini says she sees Ani's and Meera's faces laughing at her. The subtitles say, she feels destiny is playing a joke. (I'm going by my memory, but it was something like that).

In Thursday's episode, Akhil tells Nandini the person responsible is not alive to answer their questions. The subtitles completely skip the whole to answer the questions and leaves it at no longer alive.

There are many, many more, but i am too tired and sleepy right now.

Oh another thing. Last week Nandini often referred to Meera as 'that woman,' but the subtitles put 'Meera' in place of it. It's one thing to put the names instead of the and respectful, familial addresses (didi is translated to the name, bhai is translated to the name, devarji is translated to Balraj, etc). I have no problem with that. But stuff like 'yeh aurat' needs to be translated correctly.

Sorry for the rant. Well I'm not sorry. I just wish I had better framed this post. But I'm watching today's episode with subs, after a tiring day. And what's been bothering me for weeks now just had to let out. So I'm making the post now.

Nothing's probably going to come of this, but seriously, the half-ass job at subtitles is annoying and pissing me off.

I understand what you're saying and am glad you said it. I unfortunately don't speak Hindi but I do know when context doesn't match action and when emotion does not reflect tone or proper content of the spoken word. The worst part for me is I'll probably never learn Hindi this way.

Same here, I am not a Hindi speaker, and what ever I've picked up of Hindi is mostly from tv. And you know it's not as if good subtitles aren't given on television. As I said, I used to watch Punar Vivah and Phir Subah Hogi early 2012, and during that time, I didn't encounter such issues.

And I don't watch any Life Ok shows currently, but I did here and there till early 2013, Again, I had no complaints about the subtitles. They were often pretty exact.

But here, the subtitles are just so lazy. It's annoying.

Another instance is when Balraj tells Meera that when first came to the house, the house wasn't a home but was khandar (was in ruins?). The subtitles instead said everyone was stricken with grief, devastated. Come on...

Radev praised the dialogues of Thursday's episodes. The least that can be done is give decent subtitles instead of just summarizing the meaning. I've never seen it so bad before. It's pretty annoying.

It's probably true that they are a distraction for some/many.

Forget the States,UK, the Middle East--just for the sake of argument let's say that it's the Hindi speaking audience that subscribes to the channel in those markets. But there are other markets where a good amount of people are not Hindi speakers. Zee has a good following in countries in the Caribbean--just one example--where many of the subscribers are not Hindi speakers.

Shouldn't the subtitles be decent, so they can understand the shows and also pick up the language better? It's not impossible to give good subtitles. As I said, I watched some LifeOK shows till early this year, and the subtitles were pretty on the mark.

But here, in this show, the wife calls the husband's lover "aurat" and the subtitles are too lazy (or just plain moronic), and translate it as "Meera."

There are many other examples. Nandini's point that she sees Ani's and Meera's face laughing at/mocking her is a huge example. How in the world do you translate that as destiny is playing a joke? It wasn't just once, the same translation came up when she had her flashbacks and that line was included.

I am not a Hindi speaker but I speak fluent Hindi thanks to my addiction to Hindi television shows lol
As for the subtitles , zee has always been lazy
I don't know why they even bother if they can't get proper subtitles lol
I watch everything online , never had the chance to look at subtitles
When I was subscribed to zee though on my tv, they would telecast episodes of the same show a week later
So online was the way to go
They change the meaning of a sentence by putting the wrong subtitles

No problem. I know there are many in the same boat as you. It's part of why I made the post.

That scene with Akhil and Nandini on Thursday is such a huge FAIL in translation and subtitles. I mean from the very start of that scene, the subtitles were all off and not translating what was said.

It's a disgrace that their scene wasn't translated properly. 🤔

I understand what u feel..though i am not Indian i can understand and speak hindi pretty well..but i have this strange habit of reading sub titles if its there..i watch Korean shows so initially i didn't knew the language so use to watch it with sub..now also i am not perfect but can understand the language pretty much..so got this whole habit of reading subs from there..and if the subs are wrong it really irritates even if u know the language, coz my mind and eyes are constantly on the subs.

i can understand the situation...zeetv's international market is huge.. subtitles are a must for international audience it can also increase the viewership. i normally dont read it but i can sense it affects the flow and feel ifs not accurately translated...one of the highlights of this show is the dialogues the poor translating b Zeetv can totally spoil the feel and also mislead the viewers. i hope they fix this up and provide more accuracy. the example you gave is shocking...it does not match at all.
they hired translators who seem to be weak in both hindi and english.
