once more? JD Majethia has another phone ready |
Rajiv Mehta (Praful of Khichdi and Arvind of Baa Bahoo aur Baby) belongs to that miniscule group of people who don't own a cell phone. Reason? He is a forgetful person and is sure to lose it on Day One itself. So all these years, the actor (who is also seen on the Gujarati stage) has lived sans a mobile.
"I didn't think it is necessary to own a cell phone, and more importantly, my forgetful nature prevents me from getting one," he says. "All those who matter know where I will be at any given time of day, so they know how to get in touch with me," adds Mehta, who is single and lives alone at Vile Parle.
However, producer JD Majethia, who insisted on Mehta getting himself a handset, has learned the hard way not to push someone who is not interested in staying in touch in the first place!
Back to basics
JD says that Mehta often borrows cell phones from co-actors and even unit hands to make a call — much to their chagrin. So much so, that when things started getting out of hand, the Baa Bahoo Aur Baby producer gifted him a cell phone three weeks ago. "Many times it would be difficult to get through to him for shoots and he was adamant about not buying a mobile," says JD. Care was taken to not give him a fancy, fully-loaded handset. "Instead, we got him a basic Reliance mobile."
Baa Bahoo aur Baby unit folks say that Mehta's life changed with the mobile in hand. He was constantly stuck to the cell barking instructions to his maid about the work to be done at home, and also makes plans with his pals for an evening out. "We thought finally he had realised the usefulness of having a cell," points outs JD.
Oh no!
But as luck would have it, Mehta lost his cell within a week itself. To make matters worse, he couldn't even remember where he lost it. "I only know that it did not happen on the sets. I think I may have forgotten it at a lounge bar. It was only the next morning that I realised it was missing and called the cell company to block my number," says Mehta.
As a result, Mehta is once again without a mobile phone and is refusing to buy another one. "Why should I? JD was fully aware of my bad memory, but he insisted I get a phone. He knew that the chances of losing it were high, so he should replace it if he wants to!"
Last heard, JD was in the process of buying Mehta another cell. "Yes, in a day or two I will be gifting him another piece. I really don't know what to say about Rajiv's peculiar habit. I have known him for too long and he has been part of several of my shows. Nevertheless, he keeps us in splits with his peculiar ways!"
