Chapter XII - Don't Give Up On Me
He kept on telling her to at least try. She was scared. She was scared of failure. She thought what if she tried and failed at it. She was scared of breaking the hope that he had in her. She couldn't let that happen. On the other hand he was falling weak as the time progressed. He was losing strength and she could see that he was in pain. He had not moved since so long. His eyes were red and his limbs were sore. She knew if she didn't try and if he lost his life, she would never forgive herself. She was in dilemma. Her own body was tired. Her tore skin started burning as her brain started to register the pain. She had tried to stop the bleeding with her duppatta, but with every moment it would start to bleed again. She knew both of them needed help and as soon as possible. She closed her eyes and put pressure on her lower back and her legs. She kept the pressure on her legs, but in vain. She sighed and tried again, it wasn't working. It seemed as if she didn't even have legs. It was as if weight was tied to her body. She tried again with the help of chair arms. As soon as her upper body moved upwards, her legs pulled her down and she fell right back in the chair. Her legs felt like stones, but she tried to moved them with her hands they felt lifeless like a wooden doll's legs.
"You can do it Sakshi." She heard his raspy voice. As soon as her gaze fell on him, her heart fell to her stomach. He seemed tired and his eyes were becoming listless. The coldness of the floor was creeping up to him. She closed her eyes and turned her head away. "You told me you wanted to take my pain away. Do it. I can't see you like this. This is painful for me to watch, so walk. Walk for me. Walk for yourself. Take a step and take me out of this pain. You can do it. One of us has to get out of here or else Sikander will get away and justice will be left in darkness. You have to do it for Roshini, you have to do it for Sameer, you have to do it for yourself, and you have to do it for me." He whispered as his voice turned brittle and croaky.
She closed her eyes as tears rolled down her cheeks. She could feel his words right in her heart. She jerked when her tears fell on her cut and gave her burning sensation. If just a tear could give her that much pain, than she couldn't imagine how painful it was for him. She opened her eyes and watch his body slumping. She couldn't understand at first, but when she saw him shiver she was shocked. His body was slowly turning off. She knew that sensation. She had been through it when she got shot. She felt the Deja vu,, but this time it was not her instead it was him... the man she loved unconditionally. She couldn't lose him. Not like that.
"Sakshi forgive me for all those times when you got hurt because of me. I was going to ask you please don't give up on me, but it's too late." He coughed as his eyelids slowly started to fall. "I am sorry."
He said as he finally closed his eyes. That was the cue and she moved her feet. She was standing and she didn't even realize. She felt her muscle pull and she felt soreness. She slowly averted her gaze down and she froze where she was. She couldn't believe it. As her mind took everything in, she looked at him. His breath was falling short. She took a step and an acute pain shot in her legs all the way up to her back. She winced, but kept on walking towards him in short steps. It took her whole courage to walk that distance. She fell to the floor in front of him. She had a little to no energy, but she had courage and a life to save. She put her hand on his hand. His hand was ice-cold so much so that it gave her already cold body a shiver. She could see him struggling to open his eyes. She untied the wire from his wrist and darts flew right through the place where she was and riddled the wall. She traced the red marks of wire with her fingers.
"Arjun see I can walk." She whispered as she held his hand and pressed it a little. "Arjun."
He was struggling with keeping his eyes open. It seemed as if the gravity was pulling him down with it. He wanted to get up. He wanted to hug her. He wanted to tell her how much he cared for her. How he had come to fall in love with her crazy personality even though it annoyed him to the moon and back. For once after so long he wished to stay live. He wanted to live and spend his life with her. He wanted to survive and reconcile with Rathore. He had seen death from close by way too many times and it was enough. It was more than enough. This time he wanted to relive the happy moments like he used to. Granted that Roshini would live in his heart forever, but Sakshi had already carved her way in his heart. He slowly lifted his hand, careful not to move his waist. It seemed impossible, but he tried. He touched her cheek with his frosty hands and he blinked open his eyes slowly. She was in tears of happiness and of sadness. His hand lingered there for a second or two and then fell down.
"I put a tracker under Sikander's shoe when I held it. I'll give you the code, give it to Shree and tell them to catch them as soon as possible and evacuate the college." He mumbled as he gave her the code. "Go before it's too late." He pushed her towards the door with whatever force he had. "Don't expect anything for me." He stated as he closed his eyes due to emotional and physical pain. It might be the last time he would ever see her and the thought killed him internally. He opened his eyes just enough to see her panicked face. He smiled at her as she wrapped her Duppatta around him. He looked at her as she turned to leave. I love you. And she was out the door.
❤️💔❤️
The moment she stepped out of that hell, she somehow felt incomplete. He practically just told her that he was dying and it did not go too well with her. She didn't believe that. She felt as if some things were left unsaid, as if some emotions were left unexpressed. She didn't know what to do. She had millions of lives to save, it was her duty. On the other hand she wanted hold his hand and breathe her last breath along with him, that was her love. But she knew she had to choose her duty over anything and everything. That was what his dad taught her and that was what Arjun taught her. Before she left the hallway she ran back and stared at him from the door.
"Arjun." She yelled. He moved his head letting her know that he was listening. "Hold on to every ounce of breath. Don't give up on me. Don't give up on us. I am not giving up on you. I want to hold your hand and walk down the aisle with you. I will be waiting for you, so wait for me."
She let out her last stray of hope and turned around. She walked on the path he had told her. Even though her legs were sore and in pain, she ran throughout the way because she had lives to save and she had someone waiting for her. She hid her face in her hair and walked out of the back side of the college as he had told her. She waved for the cab and as she walked towards the cab and tried her best to hide the cut. She got few stares, but she hurried through her way. The cab took about fifteen minute or so to reach ETF head quarters. She told the cab driver to wait for her so she could bring the fare. He fussed about it, but she convinced him that she would bring the money right way. She ran inside, falling quite a few times on her way, but she still kept going. Whoever saw her was shocked. She pushed open the conference room and they all flipped their heads towards the door to see who it was.
Shock was clearly written on their faces. For a second they all just sat there thinking if she was even real or not. They thought they were imagining her being there. Aayesha was the first one to run towards her. Aayesha hugged her tightly as she couldn't believe she was there. Aayesha let her go after awhile and stare at her from head to toe to make sure she was okay, but worry lines appeared on her forehead when she saw the cut under Sakshi's collar bone. They called Liza as she was in forensic room and they all circled her. As soon Liza came she started taking care of the cut. Sakshi told them to stop because they were firing her with questions over questions.
Rathore was quiet all the way. He didn't want to ask her any questions especially the questions which involved him. He was scared to know about his best friend. He didn't want to know anything about him because he didn't know if he would have enough courage to know what situation Arjun was in. Or was he even breathing or not? He knew he wouldn't be able to bear the pain of losing another person. Whatever emotional strength he had, he used it all to pour Roshini's ashes in the river and if anything like that ever happened again he wouldn't be able to stay stable. He would die because of the pain if he lost another important person.
Leaving behind the constant battle between his brain and his heart, his ears perked up at the mention of Arjun. He looked at Sakshi as she handed over the code to Shree. He hoped that she would soon say that Arjun was still breathing. He sighed as soon as she let the words out that Arjun was still alive and they have to rescue him. It didn't even take them a minute to get to work. Liza took care of Sakshi and took her to change in to clean clothes and eat, and of course pay the fare of taxi.
Rathore and Aayesha got in the van to leave for college. Shree was collecting the tracking data. Chotu called for the back up and left with them as Shree gave them direction. Rathore kept on yelling in anger as the traffic was keep on stopping. He kept on honking. Aayesha stared at him and she felt the need to hug him. She put her hand on his. He turned and she nodded. A tear rolled down his cheek as she clasped his hand with hers.
"I am so scared." He whispered. "What if I don't reach there on time?"
"We will be there on time." She gave his hand a squeeze to assure him.
"I can't afford to lose him. I don't know what I'll do?" He stared towards the slowly moving traffic with deep regret and pain in his eyes.
"You won't lose him. He is a fighter. He'll live through it."
He nodded. He looked at her and looked back at the front. He wanted to say sorry to her. He wanted tell her what he was feeling, but he knew it was not the right time to clear the wrongs between them. He'd have to wait to tell her what he felt. He just hoped that it wasn't too late.
❤️💔❤️
The police had already evacuated the college as they informed the police right when Sakshi told them. Rathore went in the sealed area along with Aayesha as they ran through the front ground. Rathore pushed open the door and there he was sitting there almost lifeless and his skin had turned pale. Rathore was way too overwhelmed to move. Aayesha went ahead and touched his shoulder.
" Arjun Sir." She said in slowly.
There was no reply. She looked at Rathore, while Rathore just kept on staring at Arjun. She tried once again and shook Arjun's shoulder lightly and carefully because she didn't want to risk any movement in his waist. He jerked slightly and both Aayesha and Rathore sighed in relief. Rathore took out his jacket and wrapped around Arjun while Aayesha wrapped her scarf around his neck. Arjun was too tired and in pain to move or to talk. Aayesha observed the bomb around his waist and she called to see where had Bomb squad reached.
"It's going to take them a while to come here. I have to diffuse it. Every single second is risky if we leave it on. We don't know if they have a remote for it or not and if they do they can blow it up any second" She said worriedly as she watched Arjun.
She pulled out the wire cutter from the side of her boot and started examining all the wires as her heart started to speed up. Rathore wanted to stop her, but there was no other way. He just closed his eyes because all of their lives were on line. He just hoped that they would get out of there with their heart beating, instead of their body pieces.
