Arjun who was as befuddled as the rest of the team, replied, "Look mister whoever you are, I am not kidding. I don't know who you people are. Hell, I don't even know who I am and… aah, my head hurts…"

At once, a doctor and a nurse rushed into the room and checked on his vitals. The doctor then gave Arjun an injection which soon got him into peaceful slumber. After checking on him one last time, he turned towards Rathore and requested him to follow him outside. Rathore dutifully followed him outside while the rest remained where they were, Riya taking his hand in hers.

The doctor closed the door and began in a grave tone, "Look officer, I am extremely sorry to inform that your friend there is suffering from amnesia. Unfortunately, it seems he has no memory whatsoever of his past."

Now, Rathore's face mirrored the doctor's. "Wait… so you are telling me he has lost his memory?"

"Yes, exactly that."

Rathore pressed his temple; he now would never know what Arjun was up to. At least, Arjun was out of danger. That was some relief.

"But the good news is that the phenomenon is temporary," the doctor said after sifting through the medical reports.

Rathore looked at the doctor, a small hope harboring in his mind, "You mean he will remember everything after some time?"

"Well I don't know about how much time that will take but I am pretty sure that he will remember everything some day."

"What do you mean by some day?" Rathore spat.

"I mean, if we find the right catalyst, it might trigger his memory. Though it may take one day, one month or even one year."

Rathore closed his eyes, visibly exhausted by the day's events. It was true that he always gave a cold shoulder to Arjun but in reality, he cared about him… he still could not believe that this was happening.

"Okay doc, so what do you suggest we do?"

"Well, Mr. Arjun needs at least 2 to 3 weeks rest. Then maybe he can resume his duty. In the meanwhile, don't pressurize him. Don't force him into remembering anything. It might just worsen the situation. Rather give him his own time and space. Tell him small things about him; don't say stuff that might upset him. Just be patient and when the time comes he will remember everything."

"Okay… Another thing Doc, if you don't mind can we take him home?"

"Let me check on him for another day, and then you may take him home. By the way, can you call his family members? I have some documents which need to be signed."

Rathore pursed his lips, he had seen it coming. "Unfortunately, his family doesn't live here. But you can put down my name."

When the doctor gave him a skeptical look, he continued in his same tone, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, I am his brother in law."

Arjun woke up with a start, sweating profusely. He had had a very strange dream. In his dream, there was a woman, a beautiful woman he didn't know who… but she was in pain. There was blood everywhere… she was trying to reach out to someone and then… and then, he woke up. He tried recalling the woman's face but there was nothing… it was blank. He tried one more time but it was no use. Finally, he gave up and lay still on his bed.

Now that he was fully awake, he looked at his surroundings. The hospital room where he was kept was sterile and covered with white tiles. There were all sorts of medical paraphernalia which hung around him. There was a glass of water and some fruits on a table to the right. There were also two chairs on the far right corner on which slept two men he could not quite place. One wore specs with curly hair while the other was a heavy set man who was snoring. These were the same men who had been there when he had first regained his consciousness.

It was then that his eyes fell on the dusky skinned girl in his left who was curled up on a black leather couch. Though the couch was small in size, she fitted in it quite easily. An involuntary smile escaped his lips. She looked like a small child… carefree… pure… Though she was not out of the world beautiful but there was something absolutely arresting about her. As the sun rays played on her face, he felt an unknown attraction towards her.

Judging by the rays he guessed that it was sometime in the afternoon. So, he craned his neck to get a look at the wall clock but as he did, a searing pain shot through his entire body. He cursed under his breath and resumed his previous posture. It seemed whoever had inflicted the pain upon him had made sure that he was dead. It was a miracle that he was still breathing.

And then there were questions… thousands of them. Who was he? What did he do that put him in such a condition? Who were these people, especially the girl on the couch? Where was the other man who had been there earlier? Gosh, he could already feel the beginnings of a headache.

At that very moment, a doctor entered with a stethoscope hung around his neck. He smiled in his direction and said, "Mr. Arjun, I am glad that you are awake. So, how are you feeling now?"

Out of the corner of the eye, he noticed the girl rubbing her eyes, even those two men stirred.

"Arjun… is that my name?"

"Yes," retorted the man with the moustache as he entered the room. He was back.

He continued, "Your name is Arjun Suryakant Raute."

Arjun repeated the name in an attempt to elicit a response from his mind. But he didn't get any.

"You are the second in command with the ETF."

He nodded his head trying to digest the new facts but somehow it only confused him.

"ETF?"

"Emergency task force."

"And you are?"

"Rathore… Sameer Rathore, leader of the team."

By this time, the others had already gathered around him.

He looked at the unfamiliar faces one by one. They seemed alien… except the girl. She was looking at him with so much warmth and affection that he felt an unreasonable calm. He detected some hesitancy when he tried to reach out to her but within a moment it was replaced by the same warmth that she radiated earlier. She held his hand and strangely, he found it easier to breathe.

The Rathore guy and the others gaped at him, but he didn't care. He just reveled in her touch. He knew they had a connection the moment he had laid his eyes on her. Amidst this confusion and chaos, she was the only one who felt familiar…

The doctor who had been quiet for some time, again enquired, "Uh… how do you feel, Mr. Arjun?"

Arjun, momentarily lost in the hazel orbs of the angelic girl, jerked back into reality. "Uh, it still hurts, but I feel better than before."

"Good, don't worry, I will give you a local anesthesia and you will feel just fine."

"Doc, can we take Arjun Sir home?" the man with the specs spoke for the first time.

"Not before, I do some tests. Then maybe you can take him." Saying thus, the doctor gave an anesthesia and he along with the rest exited the room.

Only Riya stayed back, her hand still in Arjun's. She tried withdrawing her hand but he held it in a firm grip. To say that she was surprised would have been an understatement.

"What's your name?" he asked curiously. He hoped that maybe she might help him in getting his memory back.

"Riya."

"Riya…" he enunciated slowly. It made her breath caught.

"I am your…" she began, but before she could finish, he intervened quickly, "My wife… you are my wife, right?"

But Riya could only gasp.
