Part 4
Anupama laid down on the bed and closed her eyes. Sleep eluded her, for she could see him even behind closed eyes.
Her eyes flew open then and she smiled. She reminisced every moment from their date and felt her heart flutter like a hummingbird, rhythmic and still erratic.
Admiring the bracelet adorning her wrist then, she brushed her fingers against the engraving. A love A. Lifting the pillow from her side, she clutched it to her chest. She missed him already.
‘If only he was here’
He could be. She closed her eyes and recalled his words. She just needed to say it.
Anupama turned and shook her head then. She could not allow these giddy feelings to cloud her judgment. They needed to take it slow, step by step. She wanted to savor every moment with him.
~*~*~*~*~
Anuj tossed and turned, and then tossed some more. But sleep refused to ensnare him. Alas, he was already bewitched by someone else; no way was sleep going to break that spell.
He smiled dreamily as he recalled how happy tears had graced her eyes and how his gestures had touched her heart. That was all he ever wanted. To have her belong to him like never before. He was in her heart, but he wanted to become that fragment of her soul that she would never, even for a moment forget.
She had flirted with him too. Anuj laughed as he recollected her flustered visage when he had unbuttoned his shirt. He was teasing her indeed, for the most part that is. Because a part of him was always ready to surrender to her.
“If I were to tell her that…” Anuj mused but then shook his head. No. She was already overwhelmed by her complicated feelings. He was going to take it slow. He will push it every now and then, but only enough to nudge her limits.
Closing his eyes, he smiled again. She had waited on him in the parking lot, until he had completely disappeared from her view.
He hid his face in his palms then and groaned. Oh, Anuuu! How am I to live without you now?!!
*~*~*~*~*~*~
He was trying. And really hard at that. But it was not working. Anuj groaned and slapped the file shut. It was 8:15 AM now. He had shown up at the office an hour before the working time because he was overexcited, and had thought of utilizing that time in getting some work done so that they could spend more time together. But all he had done in the past 15 minutes was stare at the door, stare at his watch, zone out and then stare at the door some more. The anticipation was killing him. At this rate, he was going to faint, before Anupama even came by.
“I need coffee!” Exclaiming loudly, he sprung up from his chair and walked out of the cabin.
15 minutes later, stepping into his cabin, feeling relatively calm, Anuj took his seat but as his hand went for the file that he had placed on his right, he found it missing and looked up only to find it kept cleanly at the other end. Brows furrowing in confusion, he reached for the file and as he dragged it across the desk, something rustled and he lifted the file to find a note stuck on its underside.
‘Nahin thhe tum mere paas tab koi baat nahi thi
Bhul gayi hu ek bhi pal tumhe, kal wo raat nahi thi’
His eyes watered as he read and re-read the note. To think, he wasn’t the only one feeling this way!
His eyes widened then, and quickly flickered to his watch. It was 8.33 now. Didn’t that mean that Anupama had come early to the office too? His heart somersaulted then and he jumped off his chair, dashing towards her cabin. He really needed to see her right now.
*~*~*~*~
Sleep had abandoned her today in the wee hours. So she had enough time to clean up her place, and once she was done, she had found herself stepping into her workplace. She knew well that Anuj won’t be at work until 9 but her heart had refused logic.
She had carefully stored his note from yester night. Tum...sirf tum. Those weren’t just words, but emotions. Anuj was a poetic kind of person which she was not. But she did realize, if these words could move her so much, how much they would move a man who practically lived by them. Thus she had brainstormed a good 10 minutes in writing a 2 line hindi rhyme that equated with her emotions, and she hoped that she would be able to put a smile on his face like he always did with her.
Entering into his cabin to a scattered stack of papers had made her heart rate soar. Anuj was in the office too! The mere thought of seeing him had her stomach in knots. She wanted to see him, smile and blush and just…brighten up her day. And yet her urge to pleasantly surprise him was much stronger, as she attached her note to the underside of file and quickly walked out.
The time was 8.36 now. Was he back in his cabin? Had he read the note? Did he even find it?
Anupama found herself worried at the thought. What if someone else were to read it?Her head was reeling with multitude of thoughts when she heard footsteps approaching and looked up to see Anuj as he pushed the door open.
She roused from her chair slowly and their gazes met. She could read the happiness in his eyes.
“Anu..I…” Voice thick with emotions, and a block forming in his throat, Anuj advanced in her direction and looked at the love of his life as she smiled gently, in understanding.
He was on the verge of breaking down. She could see it and thus moved around the desk swiftly and came to stand right in front of him.
Anuj breathed in deeply. He didn’t want to cry. No. He just wanted to share how blessed he was feeling in this moment.
“Vo shayari…tumne…” Anuj trailed, as a sniffle involuntarily escaped him. Nope, not working. He knew waterworks were in order.
She reached for his hand then, and clasped it tightly, “Tumhe achi lagi?”She asked hopefully and as he nodded, she finally let go of the breath she was holding.
“Bahot”, Anuj added as he rubbed his eyes fervently, to ward off the persisting prickling feeling of tears.
“I— feel so happy that every time….” Anuj laughed patting the breast pocket of his coat, “…that every moment…I touch it…I feel a rush of emotions- disbelief, if this is real;ecstasy then; that yes this is real and then fear…” He intertwined their fingers and looked into her eyes, “…fear of losing you”.
He looked vulnerable. He would always bare his heart in front of her, without a second thought.
Shaking her head, her hand reached out for his cheek when a knock at the door interrupted them, and the duo pulled apart.
“Mam?”
“Yes, Samarth?”
“I think we should leave now. The meeting with Bal Samridhi foundation is at 10, and it is quite far from here”.
Anupama nodded and as the door closed behind Samarth, she quickly hung her purse on her shoulders and lightly clasped Anuj’s cheek.
“Lunch saath main karte hain?”
Anuj smiled slightly, as he held her hand and nodded. “Sure, take care on the road and best of luck”. And with that said, Anupama walked out.
Anuj also had a series of meetings lined up that day, and soon found himself neck deep in work. Lunch came by fairly quickly, but his meeting with the creative team went on way past it, as they finalized their campaign for the A&K holiday suites in Manali, his second luxury venture in India, and his first, out of Gujarat.
When Anuj finally came back to his cabin, it was 4 already and loosening his tie, as he sat himself down, he found a lunchbox waiting him and his eyes widened.
“Anu! Lunch! Shit..I forgot!” Rising on his heels in a second,he hurried to her cabin only to pause at the door on seeing her in deliberation with Santosh from finance.
‘This is probably about the School for special children’, Anuj mused as he stepped back quietly. For a long time now, she had been wanting to build an institute for special children. Following the success of their ‘Maa ki Rasoi’ endeavor, Anu had not only earned accolades but had developed confidence too and was independently handling this project, to support which she had actually secured investment from a famed visionary of New Zealand, sans his help. He was proud of her. And wanted to support her as she always supported him. And thus, he quietly walked away.
At about 6 in the evening, another meeting was held where progress of their projects and standing of other businesses was discussed. While everyone looked at the power point being projected on the screen, Anuj found his impatient eyes flickering between the figures, and Anupama. Sitting on the other side and almost at the opposite end, he could only sigh inwardly as she nodded at the screen.
Anupama had her utmost concentration on the screen. And on the person sitting 4 paces away from it, as he scrunched his lips and twirled the pen and reviewed the contents critically. Every now and then, she was admiring his face being illuminated by the glow of screen when she caught him staring as his eyes widened in shock, before realization dawned in them and he winked at her.
She chuckled then, clamping her mouth with her palm. And shook her head at him. He was an absolute goofball and she loved him so much.
Once the meeting ended, more work and files followed and before long, the clock had stuck 10 when Anuj finally decided to call it a day. Stretching to ease his stiff muscles, he arranged his files into a neat pile and picking them up, placed them on their assigned rack.
He had messaged Anu already that he was going to be late. Anuj looked at his watch. That had been an hour back. So the first day post their official confession; their first day as Lovers had literally flew by without him even having a proper glance at her face.
“What a bummer!” Anuj clicked his tongue disappointed as he stepped inside the lift. Getting off at the ground floor, as he approached his car in the parking lot, he found a familiar silhouette in grey suit leaning against it and exclaimed excited, “Anu!!”
Striding towards her, as she straightened up in response to his voice, he quickly scooped her in his arms and embraced her tightly.
“Oh Anu! I missed you so much!” He whispered, tightening his hold.
Laughing, she circled her hands around his back and allowed his warmth to seep in. It was late, and so they were not under the risk of getting discovered. Also, let’s just say, in this moment, she could care less about that. Being in his arms, felt like stepping into the solace of her home after a hectic day. It felt peaceful and invigorating.
“You missed me? We were together only two hours back in the meeting”, Anupama remarked and Anuj pulled away then, twisting his lips in disapproval.
“I did not even see you properly! You were sitting in that far off dark corner!” Anuj grumbled, his arms resting over her shoulders, while hers hung around his waist.
She nodded then and replied, “Save me a seat by your side from next time, ok? And if anyone tries to sit on that seat, than don’t allow them to”.
In response, Anuj nodded thoroughly determined and Anupama rolled her eyes as she chastised him. “Anuj! I was joking!”
“Oh!” Smiling sheepishly, he scratched the back of his ears and Anupama found her gaze glued to him. Every action, every gesture, everything about him was so endearing that she was afraid, that she was steadily approaching the point of no return. She realized that soon, she’d rather be sentenced to the gallows, then live a life without him.
“Hey, maine poocha what are you doing here so late?” Anuj repeated, noticing that she was somewhere else mentally.
She shrugged in response, “Let’s just say, I had a hunch that someone is going to be very upset if we didn’t meet today”.
Anuj grinned in response then, and locked his hands behind her neck. “Your hunch was on point. Atleast, now I can look at you proper—
*Grrrrrr*
*Guddguddgudd*
Both looked down simultaneously at Anuj’s stomach which was protesting with peculiar voices.
“Dinner karein?” Anupama offered then holding back her laughter as Anuj clasped his roaring stomach tightly, which refused to cease with its weird noises, as Anupama finally broke into peals of laughter while Anuj closed his eyes, embarrassed.
“Yes, I think that’s the priority right now!” Anuj started chuckling too as he opened her side of the car, and then quickly hopped over to his side, started the ignition and veered his car out of the parking lot.
