Hi All,
This is quite a nice topic for a debate.but before u read this post make sure u
have a lot of time, coz as usual I have a lot to say!!!!I'd say that the present
format is better than the previous one.I think the previous one had
some flaws which the ATGC research team realized only after the finals(as
did all of us).
The first problem in the previous format was the first movers advantage that West and Central got as rightly pointed out by hardic
West and Central came in earlier than east to play the rounds,so they had enough time to familiarize themselves with the changes in the format. This time is crucial in a neck to neck competition like the grand finale. I believe that this is important coz, when soumya started playing she didn't do too well the first two days.she started playing quite well from day-3.so obviously that much of warm up time was needed. But when east walked in,they had not played any of the rounds even once.so they had no warm up time. Even a person like sachin tendulkar does better when he is an opening batsman and has time to settle down!
The second problem was that,in the previous format, till the last week all teams played only to stay in the competition and did not play to win. What I mean is that, last time there were ALWAYS four teams on stage and the lowest scorer was getting replaced. So the motive of each player wasthat he/she should not to be the lowest scorer… it didn't matter if they were highest/second highest. They got no bonus points for scoring well.they were just penalized if they were last. If they were the highest scorer they got a measly 15 point lead the next day, which is almost nothing.I mean,if at end of day 1 team A is leading with 250 points and team B is second with 150 points,it still didn't matter.the following day team A would start with a 15 point lead, whereas the previous day they had a100 point lead!!!so cumulative score at the end of the day had no value(bad idea,in my opinion). This encouraged teams to go into 'safe mode' and killed the spirit of the game .teams had no motive to score huge points.
Lastly, the idea with which the game was formatted was that the zone which stayed longest in the game would have an advantage, but this very idea was defeated.Soma and sanjoy from east gave an exemplary performance, but it was that very performance that proved to be the nemesis of east.by staying on for so long, they deprived their captains of a chance to hone their skills which lead to their defeat.so in other words,if u think back u'll realize that all those rounds that they had with the 2nd highest scorers and thirds highest scorers had no meaning.the points scored by them also had no meaning. Ultimately the 4 finalists battled and it was only the finalists' points that counted. The others had no role to play.
In this format, the highest scorers get into the quarterfinals . And the score of each team from each zone at the end of each day matters, coz it will decide whether they will play in the grand finale or not. so ppl have a motive to increase their scores.the game always gets more interesting that way. There is also no first movers advantage, since all finalists will face each other on the grand finals with equal exposure to all rounds.
This format has one disadvantage.that is(and this is a little confusing for me to explain)
Suppose we have a zone,eg south zone.let us say south zone has four teams
A:4th higest scorers
B:3rd highest scorers
C:2nd highest scorers
D:highest scorers
Suppose team A, scroes 350 points at the end of all four days and beats all other 4th highest scorers .Let us say that all the other teams from the same south zone score less than 350.So what would happen is that team 'A' which scored 350 points and who were actually the 4th higest scrorers as per the initial records would qualify for the grand finale. This would not necessarily mean that that team 'A' is better than the other teams in the south zone. the reason is that the Team 'D'-the highest scorers from the south zone would be pitted against the highest scorers in north, central and other zones.so the level of competition that they are facing is that much higher, making it that much more difficult to score. If team 'D' had been pitted against the 4th highest scorers from other zones, they'd probably have scored 500.which obviously means Team 'D' the best team from the south. But coz of this rule they actually get eliminated.
So if our favourite navin scores less than 295 (esha and devesh) when he competes with the others,he is out!!!That would one big dhakka for everyone.so that is one major flaw with this system.anyway, guess it will not happen.
Anybody, who read this post…thanx for ur patience!!!!
