Theme of the Week - Ghazals

Hi Folks,

Last week we had a great topic going on Dev Anand ji's songs and that gave me the idea of starting a Theme of the Week every week from Monday to Friday.

and the presence of Jagjit Singh as the judge on Saturday had me thinking, why not Ghazals as the first theme ...

Of course it was sad not to have the contestants singing ghazals on the show, but we can have our wishful thinking caps on, cant we?

So here we go folks ... the continuity of this topic depends on your response ...

List down your favorite filmi or non-filmi ghazals

Which contestant would you like to see singing them?

Share related articles, we can also discuss related artistes and basically anything under the sun related to Ghazals

Thanks for the post Kirti 😊 Its a lovely theme to start discussion with😛 And the first thought that comes to mind on reading about Ghazals is "Chupke Chupke Raat Din" 😛 That is my all time favorite - a treat to hear Ghulam Ali always👏👏 I remember, long back as a kid I had attended a Ghulam Ali show in Sri Ram College of Commerce - had got passes for it 😳 I was too small to recall anything of it now, but I do remember that he had sung this Ghazal there... Just love it... I have many more favorites, will come back with more 😊

wow! we will have great fun listing our fav ghazals.this time i can hear only arshpreets voice in my ears.she has the perfect voice for ghazals.i will try to post youtube links of my favourite songs...

oh yes arshpreet's voice is just prefect for ghazals 😊 ... remember she sang justajoo jiski thi which also happens to be one of my all time favorites ...

and ofcourse chupke chupke is such a amazing ghazal ... and no cant imagine anyone other than ghulam ali saab singing it 😊 ... but still maybe irfan???

i too doubt anyone could sing it - but irfan would probably be the only one who could give it a try...

from movies:

rang aur noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon (ghazal): sumitra
yeh bata de mujhe zindagi (saath saath): mirande

i still want to push people to try new things and arshpreet has now set the bar very high for trying different genres. i think i would like to hear her sing gaye dinon ka surag lekar, from the meraj-e-ghazal collection.

non-filmi:

awargi: NOT toshi or abhas, but irfan or even mirande
dhoop mein niklo ghataon mein nahakar dekho: toshi
apni aankhon ke samundar mein utar jaane de: harshit

and for abhaas, something bhaari but without flamboyance: ab ke hum bichhre or bhooli bhisri chhand ummeedein... but perhaps more age-appropriate is something like mehdi hasan's tanha tanha mat socha kar.

Wonderful topic Kirti... Here are some from my end...

I know some of these songs here may not exactly be ghazals following all the rules (Thanks to Salil and Sahana from whom I learnt a lot 😳 ), but they are nazms which are usually categorized as ghazals in films too...

Jaya, do you have the link to the posts where the ghazal/nazm difference is explained? I missed that and it would be interesting to read in connection with this thread.
