Ramgarhia College student tops singing show

Ludhiana, February 8: Arshpreet Kaur, a 17-year-old city girl, has topped the all-India music contest organised by Sangam Kala Group at Talkatora Stadium on February 5 under the name, Sur Kala Sangam. Arshpreet said she had never imagined that she would actually top the contest.
Two years ago, Arshpreet had participated in the same contest and ranked third at national level. This year, she stood first in the junior group (12 to 18 years). A student of BA I at Ramgarhia Girls College, Millar Ganj, Arshpreet said, ''I have taken music as a subject and want to be a lecturer. And I love dancing too,'' she said.
Arshpreet added that she had been preparing for this contest for one year. ''But this success is beyond my expectation. There were 41 participants in our group from various places and competition was tough, but I was confident that I would perform well.''
Arshpreet's father Gurdeep Singh, a businessman, was ecstatic over her achievement. The family resides at Kochhar Market.
He said that as he and his daughter came out of the stadium after the performance, two Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) offered Arshpreet to be a playback singer in their Punjabi film. ''We have accepted their offer,'' he said.
Arshpreet was awarded the trophy by music director A R Rehman and singer Kumar Shanu. Radhika Jaitwani, coordinator of Sangam Kala Group said, ''Manveer Sood, a student of DAV Public School in Ludhiana has stood sixth in the same category.''
The judges for the contest were Khayyam and Anuj Kappu, a music director. Arshpreet also contested in this programme and reached the quarter-finals. Padma Bhushan awardee Brij Mohan Munjal of Hero Honda presided over the function. The contest was sponsored by Hero Honda.
