Listen to the sound of music...
What happens when a couple of music maestros get together? Rhythm, sur, taal and melodies take over. Which was what took place at this do to celebrate a music academy on Tuesday evening. And noone could have said it better than lyricist Sameer, who compared host Gajendrra Siingh to Tansen of King Akbar's court. "Only Tansen could perform in Akbar's court and only Gajendrra can manage to get so many stalwarts of music together under one roof!"
And it was a musical melee indeed, what with Jagjit Singh, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Pyarelal, Shaan, Aadesh Srivastav and Jatin all gathered together. Pyarelal spoke about how it was important for the new breed of musicians to know both Western and Indian music. Jagjit Singh stressed that there is no short cut to musical mastery. "It's a process, and one has to go through the process with dedication and devotion to succeed," were his words of wisdom. Shaan, who came along with wife Radhika, recounted his experience as a student of Suresh Wadkar. Later, he and buddy Aadesh Srivastav bonded like old school mates, laughing and joking, with high-fives and the works. Late entrant Alka Yagnik cordially went around meeting and greeting all her gurus, before settling down to cocktails and conversation. All in all, it was a soulful affair. Or we could say that the guests made each other dance to their tunes!
