India's first female DGP Kiran Bedi begins her new show on Star Plus tonight. We spoke to her about her sorting out issues between people on television.
Q: Tell us about your show.
A: The purpose is to fill the existing vacuum that exists in our society of an almost total absence of social alternative disputes redressal systems in a non-partisan way. A system, which is expeditious, non-monitory and just. The show is expected to generate awareness of social realities as they exist; legal responsibilities and lessons for prevention at 'others' cost.
Q: What has been your contribution to and involvement in the show?
A: The show is exceedingly well-researched and documented. My role is to add my experience to it. Formatting and conceptualizing is by Star and Siddarth Basu and his wonderful team.
Q: What kind of cases would you be shown dealing with?
A: Civil and not sub-judice. No criminal cases at all. Ones in which both parties are willing to come and present their case before the camera and the audience and be willing to answer questions raised and be cross examined. And then take the conclusion as it emerges.
Q: Will you also be aided by the legal system?
A: The show has very experienced and sensitive legal support. They are there at every step. My personal experience and my law graduation are also in support.
Q: There are chances of people coming up with fraud cases just to gain publicity. How will you solve these problems?
A: This is what having a strong research team all is about. It will ensure a good sift. As it already has done with great maturity.
Q: How far will the medium and your show help in changing perceptions and lives?
A: This is real life. Nothing made up. It will inform, present, educate, and empower men and women in society. It will encourage a greater sense of responsibility with the objective of promoting peace and harmony. Lessons learnt will prevent (hopefully) similar mistakes by others. Awareness too is prevention!
