Nitu - all your questions are answered in the preceding posts! I wrote 'em ... do me the favor to read them 😃
I will tell you though, that I'm trying to keep all my Is dotted and my Ts crossed, so there are few (hopefully none) 'dangling' details ...
I am disappointed that you did not enjoy the postscript ... unfortunately I wasn't able to provide a copy of that particular painting, but I cannot imagine that Guler school paintings aren't available on the web ... treat yourself ... some of the best of that style comes from Himachel (Chamba, Guler etc) ...
I found the language that described the painting to be truly lyrical ... go back and read it - that's an order!! 😆

Wow, this was crimson HOT at the miniature painting interlude between them!!!! Your description of Abhi's reaction and the subsequent push off was perfectly hot and yet tasteful!! What can I say, I'm a believer!!
And as always, your attention to the details of his work life and hers and even RS is excellent. I loved reading about the student reactions, that rings true and should have been shown onscreen!!
I remember seeing original miniature paintings on exhibition where I used to work one summer and the mystery of the scenes and poetry was evident then. How beautiful to read about one of the houses of this style of art and so cool that you brought that brooding romantic night scene out from the poem to this chapter...lovely...I want more of this magic!!

Moving On

It was their quiet time before bed. Abhi asked her about her day. Thinking that perhaps he would understand the need for them to not hasten their departure from 12/24, she told him about Mili's anxiety attack. That was not going to be enough to thwart his determination though! In any event, he needed to bring her up to date with the goings on of his day. After the work related discussions, Vishal had asked Abhi and his father to stay behind to discuss personal issues. He wanted the latest about Mili's condition. His daily calls were, at times met with reticence or brusqueness. He wanted to make sure that she was assured of a support system flung far and wide, and asked his father to see if his sister Vasu could be 'recruited' to help in a more active way. Both the girls would soon be free for the summer holidays. Perhaps, Vasu and Mili could go to visit Naani in Lucknow for a few days? That was felt to be a brilliant idea all around!

Simi did see the merit in that.

It was getting late. He wondered if they could continue from where they had left off earlier. It was raining pretty hard and no one would be expected up now! The Bursaati door could be left open without a worry!

Ah Abhi!! How he had played into her hand!! Time to give him a taste of his own teasing medicine!! See! No slouch she! Quite a fast learner actually!! OK, Smarty Pants!! She twisted her face and said turning over on her side - face away from him - that it could not be tonight ... dear ... she felt a headache coming on! Then, she chuckled, rolled back and putting her arms around his neck pulled him down towards her.

The door bell rang at 12/24. It was Vasundhara Mathur come to see Mili. Although the rain was coming down hard, they could still go to a shopping mall ... get some lunch ... a movie perhaps ... the things young women did? Mili fought her feelings of despair and anger. Why did this situation have to befall her?! It was not right that here was someone ' standing blithely before her ... whose life had not been turned topsy-turvy in a matter of minutes! Everything was such a lark for some! She would have turned on her heel and walked away had it not been for Simi who not needing to go to the University today, was home. The situation was duly deciphered and diffused and Mili convinced that this was a perfect way to spend a day! Mili left to grab her things.

'Vasu, please don't be hurt by her attitude! I cannot begin to thank you enough for your care and consideration!'

'Simi Didi, at this point Mili and and I are sisters as much as you and she! Have you mentioned to her the idea of a visit to Naani in Lucknow? We'll have a grand time! I've loved visiting there ... and Lucknow has a great many sites of historical importance! You know, I have another nifty idea! What do you think of Mili and me enrolling in French classes at the Alliance Francaise?! Mrs.P. Natarajan, the mother of a good friend of mine teaches there! I've met her a couple of times and she's an absolute darling!'

'Vasu, that's a great idea! Talk it over with Mili when you girls are out!'

Mili would leave to visit Vishal and Vasu's Naani in a couple of weeks. The Sethi's thought that to be a grand idea as well. Anything to help their daughter deal with her pain. It's not something they could have afforded to do on their own.

It was two weeks before Abhi could extricate himself from work to meet his commitment for tea with Anusha. I-Con's new patisserie and delicatessen would be a good place for the three to convene.

Simi could take the metro to almost India Gate - a stone's throw from Golf Links - where Anusha would pick her up and drive the two to the hotel. Abhi and Simi would drive back to KB after tea.

Simi and her minlaw walked around the sections of the shop/restaurant taking in the sights and smells. The bakery aroma was heavenly from the freshly baked goods that intrigued Simi ... she had read about croissants, but that is about as far as her familiarity with that bread type went. Then there was brioche, baguettes, focaccia, ciabatta, a wide assortment of sweet and savory buns and muffins, dougnuts, and quiches. The delicatessen was chock full of exotic cheeses from around the world - soft and hard ones from France, Italy, England, Holland, Switzerland, Greece - meats, olives, pasta, pates, condiments, prepared salads, and desserts. But the cakes and pastries! Oh the cakes and pastries!! That sacher torte!! Sounded heavenly with apricot jam between layers of chocolate cake ... smothered with chocolate ganache icing! The Black Forest Cake - chocolate, sour cherries, and whipped cream. There were sponge cakes with strawberry or mango mousse fillings ... roulades with berry and cream fillings ... fruit tarts ... tartlets ... petit fours ... cupcakes ... brownies ... pralines ... cookies ... chocolate eclairs! She was getting dizzy just from the thought of all the sweet!

In sharp contrast to the abundance of the heady foodstuff, was the sparse seating, so they grabbed three seats as soon as they became available. Anusha ordered tea and the two sat down to talk while waiting for Abhi to show up. The rest of the goodies would be had once the trio was complete. He finally walked in - about 1/2 hour late.

'Hi Mom!'. Then turning to Simi he joked - 'Oh hullo! You look familiar! Haven't I met you somewhere before?'

Simi rolled her eyes and then looked in exasperation at his mother who was already chiding him for his 'childishness'! He continued about how that was natural given two elderly women. Enough was enough! He got one of his mother's infamous 'dressing downs' where, resorting to Punjabi, she asked Abhinav Taneja to behave himself!! It was always like that! When being stern was warranted, Punjabi was the language of choice and he was addressed formally! He begged her most abject forgiveness.

'Did you bring the Sikkim pictures?'

'Uh ... yes!'

'Well?!'

'Well what?! Oh! You mean you want to see them?!'

That was responded to with a threat of a sound thrashing!

They ordered food which he brought to the table. There was plenty of tea in the tea-pot, so they asked for an extra cup to be provided. He sat beside his mother with his lap-top to show her the pictures. The three were enjoying themselves immensely!

Abhi thought he might purchase some English muffins and ham to fix Eggs Benedict for the Sethis. He had taken a few culinary courses during his stay overseas, and Eggs Benedict was a great favorite for breakfast. The Sethis were vegetarian - other than eggs - but that wasn't a problem since he would substitute spinach for the ham. Whipping up a mean hollandaise would be trivial. After all it was only butter, eggs, and lemon juice!

Ah yes! Speaking of homes! This was what was on Anusha's agenda! She was bent on seeing for herself just how much progress had been made vis-a-vis a 'place of their own'. Abhi said that he was getting ready to speak to a real-estate broker to help locate a flat. Anusha asked if he remembered their flat in Green Park? Well, yes, he did. It had been rented to XYZ corporation - right? Yes, but it was vacant and she did not intend on renewing the lease. She wanted Simi and Abhi to move in there as soon as possible! He was amenable to the move and given his job situation, he thought he could even afford the rent! Had also heard that the landlady was a pushover for good looking guys! The rent would be seen to - later. He was adamant, refusing point blank to consider the move without the rent being agreed to. It was a 2 bedroom house on the ground floor with an ample garden - living and dining rooms, kitchen and bathrooms included, plus a car porch.

He discussed the move with a subdued Simi on their drive back to Karol Bagh. Much as he would have liked to have indulged his darling wife, this was something he really wanted to do. He thought it would be good if they could move during Mili's absence. By the time she returned from her Lucknow holiday they would have everything set up so as to invite her to stay over on a periodic basis. The family would be spoken to over the weekend and the plans put into motion soon thereafter.
