CHAPTER 21

"Being alone is better than to get addicted to be with someone who doesn't belong to you."

- Unknown

Kushi grimaced uncomfortably as bright light started to fill their room. Twirling around, she buried her face on the pillow preventing the light from reaching her face. She snuffled as a good and familiar aroma reached her nose. Sniffing more, she got up from the bed with her eyes closed. "Good morning." Her eyes shot open hearing her husband's husky voice.

"Arnav." she managed to say without getting lost in his infectious smile. "At your service madam." He said bowing his head slightly making her jaws drop down in surprise. "What's all this?" she enquired him in bewildered tone. Bending lightly he gave her side hug before settling in front of her and replying "nothing. Just wanted to see this."
She questioned him 'to-see-what' by widening her almond shaped eyes. "This." he answered placing his fore-finger and thumb on both corner of her lips, making her to smile more in delight. "See what i have brought for you!" he said excitedly lifting the dish from the trolley. "jelabi!" Kushi shrieked closing her wide open mouth with hands in disbelief.
Rolling her shocked eyes from, perfect looking and smelling, jelabi to her husband's face, she enquired him "did you made it?" Arnav nodded shyly stunning her more. Seeing her getting elated, he confessed honestly "actually di helped me. But as i have learned to make it now, next time i myself will cook it."
She tightly pressed her hand to her bewildered face wondering what she did to get him. When he asked what happened, she immediately looped her arms around his neck and placed a kiss on his cheek sharing her happiness. Arnav smiled as kushi moved back and then lifted a jelabi to feed her.
She moved forward to take a bite while Arnav moved his hand back playfully. Giving him a fake glare, she closed her eyes and waited for him to feed her. But when Arnav again didn't feed her, she shouted his name in anger. "Arnav."
"What happened?" she heard him ask and opened her eyes to see that he was not there in front of her anymore and turned back to place from where the sound came. Kushi's eye widened as she noticed that Arnav was still lying next to her, his head little raised from pillow. She simply stared at him as he leaned back on pillow again, closing his eyes and let a heavy sigh.
He opened his eyes and then removing the quilt from his body, he turned to the digital clock which showed time as eight in the morning. He turned to kushi to ask her why she woke him up so soon after all he had slept only two and half hour ago. All thanks to the flour which became sticky as he washed with water forcing him to take bath at 5 in the morning after kushi did.
"What are you doing?" he asked in shock seeing her wide open mouth. Kushi immediately closed her mouth and began to observe him. With his sleepy eyes, messed hair and confused face, he looked devilishly handsome but he didn't have jelabi in his hand. "You are still sleeping." She said in disbelief making him to blink in confusion.
"YOU. ARE. STILL. SLEEPING." She repeated her words but this time little louder. "What happened to you?" he asked concernedly caressing her cheeks. She looked at him in verge of breaking down understanding everything was a stupid dream. "How could you do this Arnav?" she asked shocking Arnav. "What did i do?" he cautiously asked her.
"You were sleeping." She said almost crying. "What the?" Arnav looked at the pillow she pointed wondering from when did sleeping became mistake. She continued "you know what? You are the world's most terrible, horrible and bad husband." Arnav got hold of her wrist as she tried to get up and pleaded "at least tell me what i did?"
"You didn't do anything! That's problem." She retorted. "Then tell me what i didn't do?" Arnav enquired her well aware that her mood swings was on its peak. Giving him an angry glare, she asked "what we did last night?"
"What we did? We did nothing!" Arnav replied thinking what happened last night and then said "in fact you were the one who stopped me early morning saying that you are tired and want to sleep..." he stopped seeing kushi get angry. "errr... i am not talking about it. What were we doing in kitchen?" she asked holding on to the last bit of patience she had.
"Playing with flours!" he answered jovially and jerked back when she grabbed pillow which he assumed that was to hit him and said "Making jelabi..." He became confused when she asked him why he was making jelabi. "Because you wanted to eat it and..." she interrupted him. "Exactly! I was craving to eat them. i accept that you tried but couldn't make it. So what you must have done?"
He looked at her simply, waiting for her to respond knowing very well that just a wrong answer from him might put his life in danger. She looked damn pissed off. She explained "you should have woken up before me and made jelabi or at least ordered it from the shop and then you should have waked me up by feeding jelabi. That's what loving husband would do."
This time it was Arnav's turn to look at her in shock with wide open mouth. He gulped thinking about her wish list. "You should stop watching those hindi serials, especially romantic ones." He seriously said only to get hit by pillow on his face. Removing the pillow from his face, he looked at now empty room before uttering "unbelievable."

"jelabi!" Kushi exclaimed as Anjali gave her plate full of jelabi saying that she made it for her. "Di, you made jelabi for me! So sweet of you. Do you know di? I was craving to eat jelabi from yesterday night. But no one understood my feelings. you are the best sister in the world." She said giving sideways glare to Arnav who sitting next to her and eating his breakfast.
"Really, kushiji? You wanted to eat jelabi? I had feeling that you would love to eat it. Actually i had a dream yesterday night." Anjali began to elaborate while Kushi listened to her enthusiastically munching her jelabi. "In my dream, you were asking my chotey to make jelabi for you. Poor chotey, he was trying so hard to make jelabi."
Arnav spurted the juice he was drinking and looked at his sister in astonishment. Kushi turned to Arnav in shock when nani began to talk. "Anjali bitiya, even i too had a similar dream. But chotey was not frying jelabi instead he had flour all over his body and was chasing kushi bitiya and then..." she stopped when her grandson began to talk.
"hello aman... yeah, i have started from home...will be on time for meeting." Arnav talked over his Bluetooth as he left the place in hurry. "nani, di, i will be back." Kushi said getting up when Anjali complained "but kushiji you didn't eat jelabi."
Anjali and devyani giggled as Kushi almost ran from the place. "They both are so cute nani. And our chotey! Look how much he has changed! I feel like now we will get back our chotey which we lost six years back. He is becoming his old ownself, nani." Devyani nodded agreeing to her granddaughter silently praying that her words should become true.

Few hours later, in the evening, Kushi was reading the magazine while Arnav was working on his laptop when his phone rang. Kushi understood who it was as Arnav looked at her after checking the screen. Kushi concentrated on the article she was reading rather to think some other things. She still couldn't digest what Lavanya had done even though Arnav tried to justify it.
"Yes, Lavanya. How are you now?" he asked trying to sound normal. "Good. How are you? How is kushi?" Lavanya asked him in reply. "hmmm...fine." he replied to her getting up from the recliner. Weird silence followed as both waited for other to talk. Lavanya broke the silence. "Arnav, i actually called to inform you that..." she stopped taking fresh air in. "i am leaving for banglore now."
"What? What are you talking, Lavanya? Yesterday only you got discharged from hospital? Why didn't you tell me? Where are you now? ...wait, are you in airport? What the hell you think you are doing? Wait there, i will come now." he stuffed her with series of questions in panic until Lavanya interrupted him.
"Stop Arnav. I will board my flight before you come." He tried to argue back but she stopped him firmly. "Arnav, listen. Don't try to stop me. I need this. I want to be alone, away from you for some time. I need some space and time for myself. I know to take care of myself. There is no need for you to worry about me." She finished in rude manner. She knew only this will make him to let her go.
But what she told was truth. She is doing it only for herself. She knew her stay in Delhi will have no effect on Arnav and kushi's life. The rapport they both share is amazing and Lavanya very well knew that her presence will not do any harm to them. But it is hurting her. She needed time to understand and accept the truth and reality. That's why she is leaving.
"Fine. Inform me after you reached Bangalore." Lavanya could feel hurt in his voice. But this has to be done. She has to stay away from him or else she will be the one who get hurt at the end. "Is Kushi around? I want to talk to her." she said cheerfully as much as she can. "kushi!" Arnav exclaimed making Kushi to look at him.
"I don't know where she is! Wait, let me check." He replied gesturing Kushi with his hands that Lavanya wants to talk to her. He knew Kushi is still angry with Lavanya and may not want to talk with her. He wanted to ask her wish. Kushi was in no mood to talk with Lavanya. But she loved simple gesture of Arnav. She knew Arnav will become happy if she talks with lavanya.
If not for Lavanya, at least for the sake of her Arnav she decided to talk with Lavanya. "Hello, Kushi. How are you? How is the little one?" as soon as she heard lavanya's warm voice, her anger evaporated. "Fine, how are you?" she asked watching Arnav's retreating back. "i am leaving, Kushi. Take care of yourself; of baby and also of Arnav." Kushi heard Lavanya say before ending the call. Quickly Kushi got up and went to the pool where Arnav was standing.
He was standing there watching the water. Kushi kept her hand on his shoulder giving a slight squeeze worriedly. He responded with a nod letting her know he was fine. Kushi left knowing that he wanted to be alone. He watched her as she left.
He knew he had hurt Lavanya badly that too for selfish reason. Yes, it was for a selfish reason he chose Kushi. He didn't marry her for child or for her. He married her for him; because he needed her.
He needed her to be with him, for him to breathe because she had become his breath.
Three months, his life without Kushi was the most terrible phase of his life. The pain he underwent for six years suddenly became nothing compared to the pain he felt those three months. He felt suffocated. Day and night didn't make any difference to him because he missed her every fraction of a second. More than feeling guilty for what he did to her, he felt sad.
He tried to convince himself that he loved lavanya and everything will be fine very soon. But the day he saw Kushi at his house, standing on the stairs looking at him, he understood what fool he was to think lie that. For the first time in three months he breathed properly. She was his breath, his life. And that second he knew that no matter what happens he will never let her go again.
There was times when he thought of letting her go because she deserved better. But there was not even a single time when he actually wanted her to leave. Because he knew when she leaves, his soul will also leave him.
He will never let her go until his last breath or in other words the minute she leaves him will be the minute where he takes his last breath.

****************

It was Sunday evening. Arnav leisurely descended the steps looking at his family which was gathered at living room. Anjali was sitting on couch, applying oil to kushi's hair while Kushi was seated on small stool. Prem was sitting next Anjali observing what his mother was doing while pia sat near Kushi holding a teddy bear which was almost equal to her size and listening to what Kushi was saying. He smiled watching kushi and pia playing with a teddy bear.
He walked to his grandmother who was seated on the couch opposite to all. "Come on, chotey, sit here. I was telling Kushi bitiya about do's and dont's during pregnancy. You also listen to it." his grandmother said as he sat next to her. "Oh god, so i came at wrong time." He mumbled to gain to hit from his nani. Smiling, he rested his head on his grandmother lap while she wounded her arms around his chest lovingly.
As devyani began to talk, he engrossed himself on his i-phone. "You should be more careful, kushi bitiya. No childish activities. Remember you are going to become mother of a child. You both are not at all serious about it. No running or chasing! Understood chotey?" devyani asked him in firm tone while he sheepishly smiled at her.
Devyani continued "drink lot of water. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Never skip meal. Sleep at least for 9-10 hours. Don't be idle and sit at same place. Stop eating junk foods and..."
"And stop watching hindi serials." Arnav said. Devyani nodded. "yeah, stop watching serials...wait, but why, chotey? What's wrong in it?" devyani asked her grandson in confusion. "nani, you are asking what's wrong in it? Everything is wrong. She has become crazy. She must even stop reading romantic novels."
"Stop it, Arnav." kushi threatened him. But he continued getting up "she wakes up in middle of night and asks me to cook food. She expects me to do things which only serial hero's do." He complained like a school kid to his grandmother. "i said stop it." Kushi screamed but when it didn't work, she grabbed the first thing that was near her and threw it on him.
Arnav caught hold of the comb which came flying to him and showed it to nani. "see nani, she is throwing comb at you. I tell you these saus-bahu serials are very dangerous." He said seriously. Kushi pouted "Arnav i threw it on you. Why are you saying that..." Arnav exclaimed "oh god, now-a-days they are targeting poor husbands. Nani save me."
"Arnav." kushi bit out in irritation. "chotey, stop teasing my poor bhabi." Anjali said cupping kushi face from backwards lovingly. Arnav pouted like he was really offended. "chotey stop behaving like ten year old." Devyani ordered him.
Anjali pointed out "he was always like this nani. Do you remember how he over reacts whenever papa brought dolls for me and aarti? Drama king!" Arnav retorted "thats because papa never brought me any toys."
"What about the tons of toys i brought you?" nani questioned him. He argued back "but papa never brought me anything." Kushi smiled at the three who kept arguing and stood up to leave. "kushi, where are you going?" Arnav asked as soon as he saw her get up. All three stopped arguing and looked at her. "Nowhere. Just to wash my face."
she beamed a smile at him as he nodded looking at her. His concentration got diverted as his nani began to talk.
Kushi was climbing the stairs when she stopped hearing the laughter sound which filled the house. He turned and looked at them longingly.
How many Sunday evenings she had spent sitting alone on couch wishing that she had a loving family like this just to chatter away the evening?
How many days she had spent longing for a family like this?
How many days she had spent praying that at least she should get family like this as her in-laws?
This is the family which she always wanted to have!
But she knew this is the family which she can never be hers!
