CHAPTER 7
Kushi felt something very soft touching her cheeks. She flinched as that soft thing began to press her cheeks more before moving up and down her face, disturbing her deep slumber. She tried to open her sleepy eyes but it got closed on its own accord. "mamiii..." Kushi's eyes shot open as soon as the sound reached her ears.
She noticed pia kneeling near her head, rubbing her own sleepy eyes with her left hand while her right hand was busy plucking kushi's cheek. "What?" Kushi blinked in order to get used to the light. "mami, where is mama?" pia enquired Kushi. Kushi slightly lifted her head from pillow to check other side which was empty and then gazed at the digital clock which showed 6.am.
"mami, mama is nowhere..." Kushi turned to pia, who was on the verge of breaking down. "No, no, baby...dont cry! He will be back." Kushi consoled pia, pulling little one towards her. When pia fell on her chest, she wrapped her arms around the small body and began to pat her, knowing that it will work out. "Sleep baby, sleep." She whispered into pia's ears as sleep began to take over her.
Anjali knocked arnav's slightly opened room door and waited for few minutes. As she got no response, she hesitantly pushed the door open before stepping inside the room. The sight in front of her made to freeze first but then a gentle smile spread on her face. She silently watched her little princess and her sister-in-law sleep, peacefully sticking to each other arms, as if there was no tomorrow.
"di." Arnav's voice boomed in the till then silent room making Anjali to jerk. "What happened..." he stopped as Anjali turned and signalled him to keep quiet by keeping fingers on her lips. "shshh..." Arnav's eyes got widened in confusion before it started to follow anjali's gaze and fell on his bed. Anjali observed in amusement as her brother's eyes got little widened, then narrowed and finally softened. She smiled as a smile started to creep, slowly yet steadily, on Arnav's lips.
Arnav couldn't hold back the smile seeing the two girls, whom he always wanted to see happy, sleeping serenely in each other's embrace. The scene before his eyes filled his heart with indescribable contentment. He rolled his eyes from pia to Kushi, and then halted there for a moment. While sleeping, she just looked like child.
Looking at innocent and cute sleeping face, he thought 'how come she manages to look like a child when she itself is going to become a mother of a child?' He turned to his side when he heard his sister's giggling sound. "What?" he asked in astonishment. "Nothing chotey, you said it out little loud." Anjali replied before closing her mouth with her palm trying to control her giggles.
Understanding her brother's embarrassment looking at his sheepish grin, she quickly added "not only at looks, even at heart, she is innocent and pure just like a small child." Arnav stared at his sister in awe. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?" Anjali asked Arnav hitting his arm gently.
Arnav shook his head saying "no, no, I was just wondering exactly how many days had passed since you met her? Six days or six years!" Anjali smiled and said "one day is enough to judge her. She is so transparent. A glance at her face, you can tell what she is thinking. You should see how her face changes when nani ignores her. Poor girl." Anjali finished dejectedly.
"di." Anjali shifted her gaze from kushi's face to Arnav hearing his serious tone. She nodded at him indicating him to continue. "I was planning to talk you about this. Di, you please talk to nani. What we did is wrong and we both are guilty of our actions. Why nani is still adamant in accepting kushi?"
Anjali replied in calm voice "chotey, if you had told us at least before getting married, then things would have been better. Why don't you understand that your marriage was a big dream for both nani and me? You both shattered it in a second."
"Sorry di, we didn't mean to hurt you. Actually it was my idea. Everything which happened was my fault. Nothing was kushi's fault. Believe me, she didn't do anything. At least ask nani to forgive her. Why should she get punished for the mistake i did?" he asked her sister in desperate tone.
Anjali held his shoulders and said "relax chotey. Everything will be fine. You very well know nani's anger. For nani to accept Kushi, first you must make her to forgive you and you already know how to do that, don't you? After all you had done it hundred times in past." Anjali wriggled her eyes brows making Arnav to give his half smile but then he again become silent.
"chotey, there is nothing to worry so much. Nani's anger is like passing clouds. You knew it!" anjai exclaimed patting his shoulders cheeringly. Arnav replied worriedly, his gaze never leaving kushi's face "no di. I already told you that she had just lost her family. She is feeling lonely, di. She needs you both, di. Your love and care will be her only remedy."
Anjali felt contented as she got reply to her question which was piercing her mind since Arnav got married. Did they get married only for the sake of unborn soul? Because she knew it that if that was the case, then nothing could get worse than this. Marriage without love will never work out. But now looking at his genuinely concerned face, she was sure that child is not the only reason for this marriage. There was something more.
"chotey." She called him softly and waited till he gave her, his attention. "You are right. She needs nani's and my love. And she will get it. But do you know what she needs more at this time?" she tenderly cupped his face "it's you. She needs you. Pregnant wife needs nothing if her husband is with her. And your way of coming home late after she slept and leaving early before she woke up is not going to do her any good."
Arnav gulped the lump formed in his throat hearing anjali's words. He lowered his gawk to the ground and then moved it to kushi's face. How can he tell his sister that looking at him makes his wife uncomfortable? How can he explain that his mere presence will hurt Kushi? And how can he tell that he is dying to do what her sister had asked him to do?
This is hurting him more than he thought. He couldn't ask his pregnant wife how she is feeling. He couldn't help her when she is throwing up right in front of his eyes. He couldn't take care of her in the way he wanted to. He couldn't lend his shoulders and comfort her when she cries. Hell, how can he do that when he is the sole reason for her tears?
He gathered himself and answered "sorry di, i am caught up with this new project. This schedule is going to continue for next two or three weeks. You please stay back at home until i am free, di. Please take care of her." he lied efficiently hoping that his sister will not figure it out.
Anjali smiled "do you have to say that, chotey? I already informed the association. I might be needed there for couple of meeting this week. But i will make sure i return home quickly." Anjali is working for NGO which helps struggling and lonely women.
"But as i told, it is not me who she needs right now. It is you who she needs."
How will he explain his sister that Kushi doesn't needs him? He changed the topic "you came to wake pia, right? She is getting late for school." Anjali bit her lip for forgetting reason for her visit to arnav's room. She quickly bended to pick pia up from the bed but Arnav stopped her. Then kneeling his one leg on bed, he said "wait, di. I will pick pia up.
Let Kushi sleep for some more time. She slept very late yesterday night."
Then as if he remembered something suddenly, he came back to his feet and exclaimed "di, i wanted to tell you this. Now-a-days, Kushi is sleeping very late and saying she is not getting sleep. She throws up number of times during night. When you were pregnant, you vomited only during morning know, di. I don't know what's wrong with her. Should I take her to doctor?" he asked in one breath making Anjali to laugh.
"Di, this is not funny, she is suffering a lot." He said in angry tone. "chotey, this is common during pregnancy. Any way i will talk to her. If she needs we will take her to the doctor. And i didn't laugh at her. i laughed seeing your face. Do you know how do you look now?" Anjali asked him.
"Like a fool." He replied bluntly. "no." Anjali shook her head promptly. "Like a new nervous father!" she exclaimed with a grin making him to smile. He argued back "that's not fair di. Don't forget I am already father of two kids." Anjali said "yes, you are. But this is something different, chotey. It's your own blood unlike prem and pia."
Arnav sighed and excitedly started to speak "you are right, di. This feeling is amazing. You now whenever i think about it, a knot forms in my stomach. This sensation makes me feel excited, nervous and worried, all at same time, di." Anjali couldn't control herself looking at her little brother's amused and happy face; she jolted up and left a peck on his forehead.
"i am so happy for you, chotey. It's really nice seeing you this much happy. That's how i always wished to see you. I was really worried when you married Kushi. But not anymore. I think you really like kushi very much, don't you? Of course, you like her or else why are you so happy about what's going on. I am glad that you came over Lavanya so quickly." She said.
Arnav's face got hardened at mention of Lavanya which didn't go unnoticed by Anjali. "Wait chotey. Did you tell Lavanya about this?" Arnav's face became more hardened and he slowly shook his head in negative, his gaze not leaving kushi's face. "What are you doing, chotey? Why are you hiding it?" she demanded, her voice became high for first time.
"Di, i also don't want to hide it. But I am scared, di. I am literally scared. You know how she reacts to every single thing. What if she does..." he paused not wanting to say further. He looked at ground feeling guilty for what he is doing to Lavanya. How he messed his own life along with two other girls, who he wanted to cherish the most?
"Hiding is going to hurt her more, chotey. Lavanya is very understanding. I will talk to her." Arnav interrupted Anjali "no, di. I will tell to her when she returns to Delhi. I promise. But please you don't interfere in it, di. Please." Seeing Anjali being still hesitant, he added "di, do you think that i will make use of this opportunity and try to have my chances with Lavanya? If so, then please understand that i am not doing it wontedly. i am feeling very, very guilty for hiding this from Lavanya."
"Of course, i know it, chotey. I will never suspect you because i completely trust you. Did i ask you a single question about what happened between you and kushi? I didn't ask because i believe that my chotey can never go wrong. If he does something, there will be strong reason behind it." Anjali reasoned her views.
How can she distrust her brother after what all he had done to her and Lavanya? But at least what he had done to her is because of his brotherly duty. But what he did to Lavanya to make her come out of her father's death was unimaginable. Anjali knew that Arnav holds himself responsible for lavanya's father's death as he stills thinks that pratiek uncle died while trying to help her and Arnav.
How can she forget the days and nights he had spent with Lavanya in home and mental rehab centre when Lavanya didn't even recognise who he was? He had spent nearly five years to make Lavanya normal and how he himself will destroy her again? If he had married kushi over Lavanya, then there will be strong reason behind it.
"i am not that good di. I also did some unforgivable mistakes." His guilt-ridden voice brought Anjali out of her trance. She replied "of course, you are human who tend to make mistakes. But then, i am sure, you will do anything in the world to correct that mistake." Arnav closed his eyes, not wanting to spill out the tears which filled his eyes and replied "that's what i am trying to do, di."
He picked up pia and gave her to his sister. Then he sat on bed "that's what I trying to do; trying to correct my mistakes. But i can do it, only if you give me a chance Kushi. I don't know whether I deserve it or not. But..." He removed lock of hair from her face, which had come out of her loose pony tail. He adjusted her blanket, all while careful that he didn't touch her, he left to take shower.
Kushi slowly opened her eyes after she heard their bath room door shut. She rolled her eyes to closed bathroom door; biting her lower lip, she controlled her tears which threatened to flow out. 'You have not come here to cry, kushi. First thing first.' She told herself before picking up her phone and started to do what she had planned yesterday night.
"Ram uncle, this is kushi." She told as her call was attended. Ram was her mother's cousin who had been working for gupta's industry for more than 25 years. Currently Kushi has given him power of attorney to take any decision regarding business. He is the only person who knew everything about Kushi. "How are you, beti?" Kushi heard him speak.
"i am good. Uncle, i want to know some details. Do you know shyam jha and his companies? I dont know his firm's name. Contact private investigators about it. He and his father died in car accident seven years back. Now his chachu is running their business. What i want to know is that chachu of shyam is anyway related to dad? Check about all our share holders. And do you know about the illegal business dad did? I am sure dad did something like that. Check them out, first. I want all details as soon as possible."
She cut the call with the hope that she will find the reason which Arnav is not telling her currently. She stared at the bathroom door and conversation she heard few minutes back came to her mind.
How come she manages to look like a child when she itself is going to become a mother of a child?
Believe me, she didn't do anything. At least ask nani to forgive her. Why should she get punished for the mistake i did?
She is feeling lonely, di.
She throws up number of times during night. Should I take her to doctor?
This sensation makes me feel excited, nervous and worried, all at same time, di.
That's what I trying to do; trying to correct my mistakes. But I can do it, only if you give me a chance Kushi.
Kushi closed her eyes trying to push his voice out of her mind which keeps on echoing. But she knew how to do it. What she had to do is just to think about the night when he betrayed her; actually the life betrayed her. Any other girl in the world would like to forget that night and never want to think about it.
But she is not any other girl. She is Kushi Kumari gupta or more correctly Kushi Singh Raizada. She remembers about that fateful night, every day in her life because she knew that if she didn't do it, she will fall for him again easily. She remembers the hurt, the pain and the betrayal she felt that day.
She remembers it because she doesn't want to forgive him.
She keeps on remembering it because she doesn't want to give him another chance.
