CHAPTER 6

Kushi stepped out of the bathroom towelling her wet face. She closed the door behind her; then closing her eyes, she leaned on its frame feeling exhausted after throwing up all she had eaten just an hour ago. Vomiting had become part of her routine in last few days. No matter what she eats or how little she eats, she ends up in vomiting. She felt strong gaze on her and opened her eyes to meet dark chocolate brown eyes.

"Are you okay?" he asked her in worried tone. He already got very anxious after hearing sounds from closed bathroom. Now the fragile form, resting against the door frame, did nothing except to increase his worry. He wanted to run to her, hold her and help her. But he was stopped by a voice which kept on ringing inside his head. "Don't touch me, Arnav."
He could understand how she must be feeling when she saw him. He very well knew that his mere presence is more than enough to hurt her. Because the rage that flooded him when he saw kushi's father, after seven years, was unimaginable. But for Kushi, not even two months had been passed since her parents died and not to mention that she holds him responsible for it.
If he had known that his act will cause someone's life, then he would have not even thought about doing it. If only he had known it. He saw her giving a nod and he replied her with a nod before dropping his eyes to the laptop screen. For past four days, he avoided her as much as he can. He left before she woke up and came after she slept. He gave her the space she needed.
But at the same time making sure that she is fine; all thanks to his sister. Today only he saw her after that night. Correction. Today only she saw him after that night. Because all these four nights, he did nothing except to watch her sleep. He sighed and tried to do one thing which had become almost an impossible task for him now. Concentrate!
She loosened her hair band and picked up a comb from the dresser before starting to comb her silky hair while, all the time, her gaze fixed to the reflection on the mirror; not the reflection of herself, but the reflection of her husband. A husband whom she married four days ago and not even had seen his face after that.
She doesn't know whether she is angry or sad or happy about that. Actually she didn't feel anything after coming to this house. Nani still refused to talk with her. It was only because of Anjali, she felt little alive. Anjali was so sweet that she didn't mind taking off from her work for one week just to make Kushi comfortable.
Kushi made a loose pony tail and then adjusted her cotton shirt which was rolled up a little due to her hand movements. She was stealing a last glance at the reflection of her husband who was working ferociously when she noticed a small hiding creature near the door. "Pia, what are you doing there? Come here." She said as she turned and walked towards the door.
"Don't come near me." Pia shouted as she ran to other corner making Kushi to frown. Even before Kushi could react, she heard a stern voice "pia." Kushi watched in amusement as pia lowered her head like one who was found guilty for crime and silently walked to her uncle. Arnav shut his laptop before turning his attention to little girl. "Is this the way to behave to elders?" his voice more stern now.
"Sorry mama." Kushi heard pia say before pointing at her and complained "but I don't like her."
"Why is it so?" Arnav asked as he pulled pia into his arms, making her sit on his lap, his voice more calm now. "Why she is staying in your room?" pia asked in the highest pitch she could reach. Arnav reasoned "she is your mami. And mami must always stay with mama know, right?" but pia shook her head still not convinced.
"Because of her, mummy told i should not visit your room often as it will disturb her. And also I cannot sleep here as she will be sleeping with you." Pia grumbled in angry tone and finished little breathless because of the big sentence she spoke. Arnav almost chuckled but becoming aware of disapproving look he got from pia, he made a straight face.
"Did di tell like that?" he asked faking an angry tone. Pia nodded instantly and then smiled as she heard her favourite mama say "then, wait. Tomorrow morning i will ask her how can she talk to my princess in this way? My princess can come here anytime and she can sleep here whenever she wants." He said kissing her cheeks but pia immediately turned to face him asking "really?"
He nodded and kissed her forehead. "Can i sleep here tonight?" she shot up immediately. Arnav smiled "yes." Pia smiled back but immediately frowned "but where will she sleep?" Pia asked pointing towards kushi who was now seated on bed watching this duo. Arnav replied "look at your mami. She is so thin and doesn't need much space. We all will sleep on same bed."
Pia giggled at first sentence and then nodded happily at second sentence before turning to Kushi and giving her a sweetest smile that kushi had ever seen and sing sang her uncle's words "we all will sleep on same bed." "I love you." Arnav said to pia who immediately asked "more than mummy?" Arnav nodded. "More than prem? More than nani? More than mami?" pia kept on asking for which Arnav nodded promptly like he did every day.
"And more than baby?" Arnav frowned at pia's new addition to the list. "Which baby?" he asked stealing a glance at kushi who also looked shock. "Prem told me that she will bring new baby." Pia answered pointing towards kushi. "Prem told you?!?" Arnav asked in surprise to which pia nodded innocently. "And who told him?"
"Prem heard mummy and nani maa talking." Pia explained to Arnav who shook his head in disbelief and then lifted her telling "let's sleep princess." But pia interrupted him "do you love the baby more than me?" Arnav looked lovingly at small bundle in his arms and answered "no. You are my first child and i love you more than anyone else." Pia smiled.
Kushi watched as Arnav sat on bed with pia in his arms, her small head resting on his chest. He kept on whispering something to her ear for which she grinned and giggled and he patted her until she fell asleep. Kushi smiled little satisfied with her decision of coming back to him. Even though she knew that he could never make a good husband, at least she was sure that he will make a good father to her child. Her child will at least have a father like the one she always wished to have but never had.
"kushi." His whisper broke her trance and she looked at him confusedly. "pillow." He whispered. She looked at pillow and nodded before placing it in between their pillows. Arnav slowly transferred sleeping pia to the bed and moved little away when pia cried "mama." Kushi eyes widened as sleeping little girl called her uncle instead of her mother and who then became silent when he started to pat her.
"She said mama." Kushi voiced out her thoughts and didn't realise it until his surprised gaze fell on her face. "i mean small children call their mother while sleeping." She justified not sure what else to do. He smiled "pia is more close to me than di. Actually she was literally born into my arms." He said kissing the child's forehead before looking up at Kushi.
"i mean nani didn't made it to hospital in time. Nurse gave me the child as di was unconscious. You know i got very nervous and my hands became shaky. She was so tiny." He explained showing kushi his palm. Kushi observed him as his eyes glittered with unconditional love like the one she had always seen in her mother's eyes.
He continued "but that was short lived. Once i took her into my arms, everything got changed. She changed my life forever." He smiled re-relishing the precious moment of his life and left another peck on small girl's forehead. "She made me feel like new father and i promised myself that in this life, i will never let her to feel that she doesn't have a father."
"I am sorry. I heard that her father died in an accident." Kushi told apologetically feeling sorry for poor soul who didn't even had a chance to see her father. His face got hardened and he said "accident! That's what everyone told. But we know better than that."
"What do you mean?" Kushi's eyes got widened. "So you think it was a murder?" she asked, after a few minutes of silence, trying to recollect what her private investigators had told about shyam jha's and his father's death. "It was a murder. A well planned murder." He muttered before resting his head on head board, his hands still patting pia.
"So i assume you also know who did it?" she asked curiously. He nodded "jiju's uncle."
"How are you so sure about it?" Kushi interrupted his abstraction. He opened his eyes and said "I was not. But di was very sure about it. The day before he died, jiju told di that his chachu is cheating his father and is using their companies name to do illegal business with some people. But then I was a stupid enough not to believe it because I thought jiju's chachu was really sweet."
Kushi frowned "then when did you believe it?" Arnav stared at kushi's face for a moment before lowering his gaze to the ground. His eyes became distance, his hand stopped patting pia, and he gulped "I believed it on the day, when I was thrown out of that house along with one-half year old prem and four months pregnant di."
His memories went down seven years to the day when he was forced to change from a happy-go-lucky guy into cold and ruthless Arnav Singh Raizada. They say that difficulties won't come alone but they come together with more difficulties. When Arnav was trying hard to face one problem, the next one came. But, after that day, the following three months made Arnav to realise that life is not bed of roses like he always thought. The world was filled with cunning and selfish people.
"But di was jiju's legally wedded wife and his fortunes eventually belong to his children. Then how come?" kushi asked confusedly. He replied "according to jiju's father's will, he left all his possession to his brother and none to his late son or his grand children. Fake will." Kushi nodded "why didn't you go to court, then?"
"Because i had my plate filled with some other issues." He said dismissively. "Like what?" she asked quite irritated with the way he answered her. "Like finding some place to live as i didn't want di sleep on park's bench again or like finding way to make money so that i can buy milk for prem." He said sarcastically as he once again leaned back on head board with his eyes closed.
"That's why you all stayed at lavanya's house." Kushi said suddenly understanding the information she got from private investigator. Arnav looked at kushi in astonishment, then nodded, his eyes once again growing distance, he said "yes. Prateik uncle was kind enough to let us stay there for three months until I finished my graduation."
"prateik kashayap, lavanya's father..." kushi added connecting the dots she already knew and suddenly exclaimed "the lawyer, one who was found dead in his house in a strange manner, exactly two weeks later you came back to delhi." Arnav's face got hardened as past started to blaze inside his mind. He tried hard to keep away the pictures that flashed in front of his eyes.
"Is his death also related to your jiju's murder in some way? I don't know. But i still can't believe you let them all easily and came here to delhi from mumbai." She said thoughtfully not noticing the way Arnav changed with every word of her. "You, people had money and power. And we had nothing, kushi. We are just middle class families who had nothing." He gritted out.
"what can a twenty-one year old, who didn't even had money to pay for his last semester exam, do against the people like your father, who had money and more importantly power?" he spitted out venomously. Kushi froze before questioning "my father?" Arnav got up from bed closing his eyes and then said "forget it." Saying so, He then stormed out of the room leaving astonished and more confused Kushi behind.
Kushi tried to connect the facts she knew but nothing made sense. She always thought tiff between Arnav and her father was business oriented but now it seemed like she had got it all wrong. "mamaa..." she turned hearing pia's voice and started to pat her just like Arnav did. Then looking at pia, she forgot what Arnav had said as her heart started to feel for pia. Though her father had never been good to her, at least she had someone to call as dad unlike this small girl.
Suddenly she remembered the days when her father behaved to her in the way she wanted. After her mother's death, she saw a lot of changes in her father as he started to care for her like her mother did. It made her to come out of the grief she felt after losing her mother. But then it didn't last long.
Nearly one month after her mother's death, one day she heard his father arguing with her brother in the bar inside their house. She walked to the place as the sound grew louder. She froze near the closed door when she heard his brother say "I can't let that Arnav Singh Raizada win again. We already lost to him because of your idiotic daughter. I won't lose to him again."
"Shut up, arjun. She is your younger sister. She is going through this because of what i did. I lost my wife because of what i did. And iam not going to do it again." She heard her father say in firm voice. "Fine, then i myself will do it." Her brother argued back. Her father said "i am not going to let you do it."
"You can't stop me, can you?" she heard her brother's voice before it said "dad, take your hand off me." Kushi held the door knob when arjun shouted "take your hands off me." Kushi rushed inside when she heard her father's scream; first she noticed her brother adjusting his collar and then noticed her father lying near the counter surrounded by pool of blood and broken wine bottles.
It was another worst day in kushi's life where she had to witness against her own brother for killing her father. But it was the same day when she lost her all will to live anymore, she found new a hope. That was the day she came to know that she was pregnant.
Kushi held her tummy in one hand while other hand stroked pia, she stared blankly at the ceiling while she waited for sleep to take over.
