Look Who's The Smarter One

I wonder what the police was doing in the Raizada house. I mean, they are the people with a high reputation and I know that having police at their place wasn't going to help. I  kept staring at her hands, playing with my dupatta when the police asked for me.

"Aap mein se Khushi Kumari Gupta kaun hai?" Hey devi maiiya, ab humne kya kiya?

"Ji aap uske liye kyun pooch rahe hai?" He asked, and glared at me icily, sending shivers down my bone. Great, now he will definitely get a reason to chuck me out of the house and I'll be jobless, again! And why exactly was he glaring at me when he had no evidence?

"Hume yahan se kisi ne phone karke bola tha ki unka kuch samaan chori hua hai, aur Khushi ke upar ilzaam lagaya gaya hai."

"Chori? Or wo bhi Khushi? Ho hi nahi sakta. Khushi kabhi chori nahi kar sakti, wo aisi hai hi nahi." Anjali Ji defended me and I smiled at her weakly. But only I knew the inner turmoil I was going through.

****

My blood boiled. How dare she even think of stealing in the Raizada house? How could she stoop so low? My mind asked me, but somewhere deep inside, I knew she wouldn't do such a thing. Even though I always called her the person 'who'd do anything for money', I knew Di was right. Khushi would never steal. But then again, I couldn't let her off the hook without a proper investigation. "Di, aap police ko unka kaam karno do." Shooting Khushi one angry look, I turned to the police to ask who had called up and informed about the incident.

"Maine police ko bulaya hai ASR." Lavanya spoke and I turned to look at her. I saw Naani shoot her a disgusted look, and Di looked disgusted too. Maami's mouth was shaped in an O in shock, while Maama Ji and Akash stood transfixed on their spots, the looks on their face suggesting they believed Khushi wouldn't do such a thing.

"Hello Hi Bye Bye! Hum jaanat hai ki ye phati saree kuch to gadbad karegi hi." Maami twisted her face in anger, and with one look, I managed to shut her up. I have no clue why I was letting this defensive side of me take over me, and it only added to my frustration.

****

Has she gone crazy or something? Why the hell would I steal anything? And that too something that belonged to her? For god's sake, I wouldn't even want to touch her things. Come to think of it, I thought she was the innocent one in the relationship, but turns out both are made for each other. Raakshas aur raakshasni.

Before I could speak up in my defense, the raakshas asked his raakshani about what exactly was missing and how she knew it was Khushi.

"ASR! Maine iss Chamkili ko apne kamre mein bheja tha kuch samaan lane ke liye. She came back with what I wanted, par jab main waapas andar gayi, to maine check karna sahi samjha. I mean, we all know Chamkili ka character kaisa hai." She made a face at me and I had the urge to punch her right then and there. How dare she?

****

I cringed as Lavanaya called her chamkili repeatedly. I had managed to not get annoyed by that name, but it kept on affecting me. And then she indicated how Khushi's character wasn't right. I felt blood rush up my brain as anger took over me. I saw Khushi's hands curled up in a fist and I almost smiled. She was so short-tempered. I could she her going red in frustration. Shaking my head and gaining control over myself and my emotions, I spoke in a stern voice. "Lavanya, get to the point. Faltu ki baton pe time mat waste karo please."

"Faltu ki baat nahi hai ASR. This girl... remember tumne mujhe wo necklace gift kiya tha? Do you remember ASR?" I really didn't remember, but I nodded. I had gotten her a million different things. Why did she expect me to remember this one? "I checked my jewellery box and it was not there. I mean, wo aur kahan gayab hoga? Of course, iss Chamkili ne hi churaya hoga."

"Aur aapke paas saboot kya hai Lavanya ji?" Khushi spoke up for the first time since the police had arrived, and for some odd reason, it felt good to see her stand up for herself. I wanted her to prove herself right. Because I knew she was.

****

"Mujhe tumhara bag check karna hai." The raakshasni asked and I smirked.

"Kar lijiye." Walking inside the house to the lounge room, I picked up my bag and handed it to the inspector who had walked in with the others. I knew the necklace was going to be in there and this was going to turn out to be like any typical TV show. But I had my plan worked out and this time, I was not going to see myself being put down. I think I have been insulted too much already.

As expected, the inspector found the necklace and the raakshasni shrieked. "See! I had told you she had stolen it." I rolled my eyes at her. She was such a bimbo.

****

She still had the nerves to stand here and look me in the eye. "Tumhari itni himmat!" I growled and walked towards her. She usually got scared when I took steps towards her, but this time, she folded her arms across her chest and tapped her foot against the floor, as if bored. What was she doing? Watching a boring drama? "Aur tum abhi tak yahan khadi ho, besharmo ki tarah." Di looked at me and shook her head, but I wasn't going to stop. Maami and Lavanya had a victorious grin on their faces, as if they had succeeded int their plan. Maamaji and Akash were shocked and Naani stood their expressionless. "Get out of here." I screamed at her. "Inspector, isse le jaiye. Humesha se jaanta tha main, ki tum jaisi ladkiya -"

****

"Paison ke liye kuch bhi karengi?" I asked while he looked at me, bewildered.

"Tum mere ghar mein chori karke mujhe hi jawab de rahi ho!"

"Humne chori ki hi nahi, to hum yahan se jaenge bhi nahi. Humein apne hisse ki bhi to kahani sunaane dijiye. Haan, agar aapki ijaazat ho to. Humke aapke ghar mein jo khade hai." I saw his eyes spitting anger at me and I knew he was going to scream again. But before he could speak, Naani Ji asked me to continue. Smiling, I began. "Anjali Ji, aap hume ye bataein, ki Krishna Bhagwaan ke janm ki kahani sunaane ke baad hum kahan gaye the?"

"Aap kitchen mein gaye the Naani aur humare liye chai banane." Di answered and I nodded.

"Aur aap uss time kahan the?"

"Hum yahin baithe the Naani ke saath."

"Aur phir hume raaksh - " I bit my tongue as he looked at me with that same angry look. But I wasn't getting scared this time. "Aur phir hume Lavanya Ji ne unke kamre mein bheja unka phone laane ke liye. Haina?" Di and Naani nodded and I continued. "Hum jab unka phone leke aaye the, to wo kahan thi?"

****

"M-main ka-kahan thi? Main... main... washroom mein thi." Lavanya stammered and gulped. Was she lying?

"Arre naahi. Aap washroom mein thodi na thi. Aap to hume bol ke gayi thi ki aap ee phati saree to eeka bag dene jaaye rahi hain." Maami spoke in her heavy accent and I knew Lavanya's lie was caught. I silently thanked Maami for telling the truth. But I still wanted to hear Khushi prove her innocence to the police. I saw her smirk at Lavanya. This woman sure was smart.

****

"Batane ke liye dhanyawaad Maami Ji." I smiled at Maami and she bit her tongue. I smirked at Lavanya. No escaping now baby. "To Lavnaya Ji humara bag dene aayi thi humare bag hume dene? Par hum to waapas yahan aaye the, unhe unka phone dene. Wo yahan thi nahi aur humara bag bhi gayab tha. Hum waapas kitchen mein gaye the chai banane. Chai banake aaye to Lavanya Ji waapas aa chuki thi, aur humara bag bhi. Hum jaante the ki kuch to gadbad hui hai, aur isiliye humne humare bag to haath nahi lagaya. Uske baad hum Lavanya Ji ko Pooja ke baare mein sikhane waale the aur police aa gayi. Humpe galat ilzaam laga hai." I finished with a sigh of relief. I felt like I had proved my innocence to the world. Naani Ji, Anjali Ji, Maama Ji and Aakash Ji smiled at me. And what was that? A satisfied look on his face? He was happy with the fact that I proved myself right?

****

"Sorry about this inspector. Must have been some sort of a misunderstanding." I spoke in complete embarrassment.

"Um... it's okay. Just make sure this doesn't happen again." With that, the three officers left the mansion. The moment I heard the door lock, I turned to glare at Lavanya. She gave me weak smile and began to speak in her defense, but I had had enough. "Bas Lavanya! Tumhari stupidity ki koi limit nahi hai? First you get drunk, aur ab ye. Tum doosro ke character ki baat kar rahi ho. Pehle khud ko dekho. Naani ne sahi kaha tha. Tumhara character hi dheela hai."

"Chote!" Di was defending Lavanya? Why in the name of god is she so good at heart?

"Nahi Di! I think I have had enough. Aap iski help karne ki koshish kar rahe ho ye... Khushi ne tumhara bigada kya hai?"

****

I stared at him in disbelief. Did he just defend me? I pinched myself to snap out of my dream, but turns out this is the reality.

"Wo tumhari help kar rahi hai Lavanya. I don't know about what, but she is helping you. You are such an ungrateful person."

"You know what, I have had enough. Main ye ghar chodke jaa rahi hoon." Shocked yet again, I looked at Naani and Anjali Ji, who smiled at me and looked somewhat satisfied.

"You know what? I don't care." He left, and so did she. For some very odd reason, I felt good that their relationship was over. Why did I care? I have no clue whatsoever. But I knew a part of me was happy for proving myself right. Because seriously, I had been put down too many times and this time, I wasn't going to let myself be insulted... and that too by the raakshasni.
